DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the centennial of the iconic 1926 “Down in Ann Arbor Town” map by exploring the colorful history\, campus traditions\, and detailed artistry that made it possible. Created by Jessie Horton Koessler (Class of 1901) to help fund the Michigan League building for women\, this celebrated map provides a fascinating view into 1920s campus life and the women who shaped it. Through three distinct exhibit sections\, journey from the campus history that led to the map’s creation to a broader look at early 20th-century pictorial mapmaking.\n\nWhile enjoying the exhibit\, pick up a scavenger hunt at the Clark Library desk that will inspire you to notice whimsical details in the maps discussed. Return your scavenger hunt at the desk for a small prize\, while supplies last.\n\nJoin the curators — Ava Pustulka (’28) and Anna Rohl\, map curator at Clark Library — for a presentation on September 24 (https://myumi.ch/X8y3r)\, where they will share the research that went into creating the exhibit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. The Art of Memory\, Paintings by Felix Lembersky
DESCRIPTION:Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter\, theater stage designer\, teacher\, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar\, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons\, these paintings\, along with his later nonconformist work\, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars\, the 1917 revolution\, and political terror\, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable\, neglected\, and marginalized people: children\, the elderly\, ethnic minorities\, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances\, Lembersky  portrayed his subjects with empathy\, dignity\, and admiration.  \n\n“For my father\, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. DESCRIPTION:We all have a story about learning: an “aha!” moment\, an unexpected detour\, a mistake\, or an experience that changed our perspective about ourselves or the world around us.\n\nYour story might come from a classroom\, research lab\, workplace\, creative project\, community\, or everyday life. Maybe you tried something new\, made an unexpected discovery\, worked through a setback\, or learned from something that didn’t go as planned.\n\nWherever and however your learning happened\, we’d love to hear about it.\n\nIn this workshop\, you'll develop and shape your story with Satori Shakoor\, founder of Detroit’s Secret Society of Twisted Storytellers and a 2017 Kresge Literary Arts Fellow.\n\nWith Satori’s guidance\, you’ll discover what makes your story yours and bring it to life. Come curious and open. No storytelling experience—or polished story—is needed. \n\nAfter the workshop\, you’ll have the option to record your story on video or share it at a live storytelling event in spring 2027. \n\nInterested? SUMMARY:Exhibition:Special Exhibition | Ancient Abstractions: Roman Visual Trends Beyond Naturalism
DESCRIPTION:The lifelike naturalistic bodies of Greek and Roman sculpture have been a source of wonder since the Renaissance. Indeed\, the Italian Renaissance artist Vasari identified the ancient world as the time “when sculpture rose to its greatest height.” But close likenesses of the natural world are not the only visual products of the ancient past. This exhibition traces alternative visual trends in the ancient Roman world that today would be considered examples of abstraction. It focuses on monuments and motifs long pushed to the margins of our accounts of ancient art. Oversize arrangements of interlocking shapes pulsate in bold block colors from tombs\, temples\, and homes\; stylized animals flicker into view\, only to collapse once more into bright geometric arrangements\; and artists adopt experimental shorthands for the depiction of space across media. Anticipating recent interests in color and form\, the visual trends of antiquity emerge as far more varied than has long been told.\n\n*Ancient Abstractions is on view from November 5\, 2026\, through February 28\, 2027\, during regular museum hours (Tuesday–Friday\, 10:00 AM–4:00 PM\, and Saturday–Sunday\, 11:00 AM–4:00 PM\; closed Mondays and university holidays.*

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CJS Noon Lecture Series | Revisiting the Art of Kusama Yayoi (1929–2026)
DESCRIPTION:Please note: This lecture will be held in person in Room 1010\, Weiser Hall. It will not be livestreamed or recorded.\n\nAt the time of her death on August 14\, 2026\, Kusama Yayoi was widely recognized as one of the world’s most successful artists. Yet\, Kusama’s reputation was based on the supposedly innate connection between her art and her personal struggles. Kusama exploited this connection to enable viewers to adjust to postmodern life through her own life and work. This talk examines Kusama’s legacy now that the artist herself is unfortunately no longer here to guide viewers.  \n\nAmanda Kennell\, Ph.D.\, researches modern Japanese media as an assistant professor of East Asian languages and cultures at the University of Notre Dame. She has published a book about Japanese adaptations of *Alice in Wonderland\, Alice in Japanese Wonderlands: Translation\, Adaptation\, Mediation* (University of Hawaiʻi Press\, 2023)\, as well as articles on ownership in contemporary media\, fine artist Kusama Yayoi\, and anime director Kon Satoshi. Seats are offered on a first come\, first served basis\; please arrive early to secure a spot.\n\nLars Horn is a writer and translator working in literary and experimental non-fiction. Horn’s first book\, *VOICE OF THE FISH: A LYRIC ESSAY*\, won the 2020 Graywolf Nonfiction Prize\, the 2023 Great Lakes Colleges Association New Writers Award\, and was named an Honor Book for the 2023 Stonewall Israel Fishman Nonfiction Book Award as well as an American Booksellers Association Indies Introduce Selection. Footnote Press acquired *VOICE OF THE FISH* for UK release in September 2022. In 2016\, Horn translated the volume Ateliers & Studios for the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. The recipient of the Tin House Without Borders Residency and fellowships from the Sewanee Writers’ Conference\, the Kenyon Writers Workshops\, and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts\, Horn’s writing has appeared in *Granta\, the Virginia Quarterly Review\, the **Kenyon Review\, Poets & Writers\, The Rumpus\, Literary Hub*\, and elsewhere. \n\nInitially specialising in Phenomenology and Visual Arts scholarship\, he holds MAs from the University of Edinburgh\, the École normale supérieure\, Paris\, and Concordia University\, Montreal as well as an MFA from Randolph College. He lives in New York and teaches at Columbia University.
