SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. The Art of Memory\, Paintings by Felix Lembersky
DESCRIPTION:Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter\, theater stage designer\, teacher\, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar\, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons\, these paintings\, along with his later nonconformist work\, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars\, the 1917 revolution\, and political terror\, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable\, neglected\, and marginalized people: children\, the elderly\, ethnic minorities\, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances\, Lembersky  portrayed his subjects with empathy\, dignity\, and admiration.  \n\n“For my father\, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. Seats are offered on a first come\, first served basis\; please arrive early to secure a spot.\n\nCAConrad has been writing poems for more than 50 years and working with (Soma) tic poetry rituals for over 20 years. Their latest book is *Listen to the Golden Boomerang Return* (Wave Books / UK Penguin 2024). They received the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize\, a PEN award\, a Creative Capital grant\, a Pew Fellowship\, and a Lambda Literary Award. *The Book of Frank* is available in 9 different languages\, most recently French and Italian. They also exhibit poems as sculpture with recent shows in London\, Hamburg\, Melbourne\, Porto\, Santander\, and Tucson. They teach at the Sandberg Art Institute and De Ateliers in Amsterdam.\n\nFor any questions about the event or to share accommodation needs\, please email zvwseries@umich.edu--we are eager to help ensure this event is inclusive to you. SUMMARY:Performance:Murakami by the Sea: An original work inspired by the work of Haruki Murakami
DESCRIPTION:Murakami by the Sea is a full evening-length devised work inspired by novels and short stories by Haruki Murakami. Placed within a constantly evolving environment of cardboard and broken tires the production creates a surreal\, emotionally charged yet often humorous world through an immersive blend of movement\, spoken word\, fantastical props\, music\, and evocative design\, where some of the urgent questions of our time are intertwined. How much do we know and care about the world we live in? What are the ethics and aesthetics of war? How does our relationship to other human beings\, animals\, objects\, and the environment shape? Can we dissolve the boundaries between self and the nonhuman world? What does solitude mean and how can we build a community? How can we remember what is precious to us and how can forgetting make us heal our wounds? The work is directed by Tzveta Kassabova with the cast and is shaped by the dramaturg Teresa Kovacs.

DESCRIPTION:Led by the Director of Choral Activities\, the Chamber Choir performs 6-8 concerts annually in both Hill Auditorium and in special settings\, such as the University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)\, and is often featured at high profile U-M special events. The Chamber Choir has been featured on GRAMMY-winning and GRAMMY-nominated albums\; sung with the Detroit and Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestras\; and has toured internationally. They perform\, standard\, classical\, and contemporary choral works and often perform commissioned works in world premieres.
