SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. The Art of Memory\, Paintings by Felix Lembersky
DESCRIPTION:Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter\, theater stage designer\, teacher\, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar\, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons\, these paintings\, along with his later nonconformist work\, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars\, the 1917 revolution\, and political terror\, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable\, neglected\, and marginalized people: children\, the elderly\, ethnic minorities\, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances\, Lembersky  portrayed his subjects with empathy\, dignity\, and admiration.  \n\n“For my father\, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. Their latest book is* Listen to the Golden Boomerang Return* (Wave Books / UK Penguin 2024). They received the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize\, a PEN award\, a Creative Capital grant\, a Pew Fellowship\, and a Lambda Literary Award. *The Book of Frank* is available in 9 different languages\, most recently French and Italian. They also exhibit poems as sculpture with recent shows in London\, Hamburg\, Melbourne\, Porto\, Santander\, and Tucson. DESCRIPTION:“an artist known for beguiling melodies and a supple turn of a phrase.” –American Songwriter\n\nIn January 2024\, Kim Richey found herself in Mexico\, gazing out at a sea of people singing along to “I’m Alright\,” one of her classic tracks. The three folks on stage with the veteran\, Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter were also raising their voices in harmony. To her right sat Brandi Carlile\, to her left\, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Brandy Clark. The formidable foursome was participating in a songwriter’s round only half-jokingly dubbed “Titans of Americana” at Carlile’s female-forward Girls Just Wanna Weekend festival on the Riviera Maya in Mexico.\n\n“That was nuts looking out and seeing everybody arm-waving and singing along\,” says Richey\, still both incredulous and cheered by the memory of performing with that supergroup and later appearing alongside other Girls Just Wanna Weekend-ers Annie Lennox\, Lucius\, Allison Russell\, and Sarah McLachlan among others. “It was just like\, ‘wow’!”\n\nThe good news for fans of this particular Titan is a whole new batch of songs to sing along with and arm wave to with the release of her 10th studio album Every New Beginning. The 10 songs on Every New Beginning represent the full spectrum of the Ohio native’s gifts as both a revered songwriter who can leap from melancholy to mirthful in a single couplet — whose songs have been recorded by the likes of Brooks and Dunn\, Patty Loveless\, and Mary Chapin Carpenter — and owner of one of music’s truly celestial voices. \n\nThat voice\, which Brandi Carlile has cited as formative in crafting her own style\, is a widely sought after harmony instrument and has been featured on scores of albums including Jason Isbell’s acclaimed Southeastern\, Trisha Yearwood’s Everybody Knows\, Heartbreaker by Ryan Adams\, Reba McEntire’s Starting Over\, and Has Been by Capt. Kirk himself\, William Shatner\, among many others.

DESCRIPTION:Murakami by the Sea is a full evening-length devised work inspired by novels and short stories by Haruki Murakami. Placed within a constantly evolving environment of cardboard and broken tires the production creates a surreal\, emotionally charged yet often humorous world through an immersive blend of movement\, spoken word\, fantastical props\, music\, and evocative design\, where some of the urgent questions of our time are intertwined. How much do we know and care about the world we live in? What are the ethics and aesthetics of war? How does our relationship to other human beings\, animals\, objects\, and the environment shape? Can we dissolve the boundaries between self and the nonhuman world? What does solitude mean and how can we build a community? How can we remember what is precious to us and how can forgetting make us heal our wounds? The work is directed by Tzveta Kassabova with the cast and is shaped by the dramaturg Teresa Kovacs.
