SUMMARY:Exhibition:'Redefining the Crown' Art Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:\"Artist’s statement: For centuries\, hair has been critical to how human beings understand racial categories\, gender designations\, and class status. For Black women in particular\, hair has and continues to be tied to ethnic identity and a history of self-determination\, social justice\, and survival. Thus\, chemotherapy-induced hair loss is a devastating event for Black patients who are also more likely to be diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer subtypes necessitating chemotherapy\, carrying a 40% increased risk of dying from breast cancer.\n\nRedefining the ‘crown’: Approaching chemotherapy-induced alopecia among Black patients with breast cancer” started as a manuscript published in the scientific journal Cancer. But the work could not stop there. “Redefining the Crown” then metamorphosed into a photo essay project aimed at exploring the breast cancer journeys of six Black women and their experiences with hair loss due to chemotherapy. Though the project centers the experience of Black women\, we also acknowledge that breast cancer and chemotherapy-induced alopecia impact individuals of all genders. While the goal is to illuminate the unique stories of Black women who are affected uncommonly by this common disease\, the project is also a call to action regarding the disproportionate breast cancer-related mortality facing Black communities.\n\nIn this portraiture series\, photographer Tafari Stevenson-Howard captures the intimate journeys of Ann Chatman\, Tanisha Kennedy\, Felecia McDaniel\, Shantell Elaine McCoy\, Tamara Lynn Myles\, and Veleria Banks. This exhibition examines how these women have navigated the profound impact of hair loss caused by chemotherapy and how their sense of cultural pride and personal identity have been redefined amidst their battles with breast cancer.\n\nThese survivors have redefined their own crowns. More profound than the new hairstyles they don after hair loss are the invisible crowns that they choose to wear each day: gratitude\, faith\, and resilience. What do their words mean to you? Drawn from the archives of Project Save\, these photographs capture different valences of American life\, as experienced\, performed\, and imagined by Armenian immigrants. From naturalization classes to festivals of nations\, from breaking new ground for churches to mundane tableaus of Thanksgiving and Christmas\, this range of photographs offers a glimpse of a community in the making\, one that sought to preserve a memory of its Ottoman past even while anticipating an American future.

DESCRIPTION:A special display at the Gerald Ford Presidential Library will feature the Northwest Ordinance of 1787\, on loan from the NARA\, and on display in Michigan for the first time. Drafted by the Confederation Congress at the same time as the Constitution\, the Ordinance outlined a framework for government in the northwest territory\, defined the rights guaranteed in that territory\, and created a process for admitting new states to the United States. The display offers a rare opportunity to view a document that helped shape the ideals and values of the young nation.

DESCRIPTION:Iranian-American artist Sheida Soleimani explores themes of migration\, political exile\, queerness\, and environmental crisis through the wildly imaginative and intricate scenarios she first stages in her studio. The tableaus—which often include live animals\, props\, even her parents—are then photographed\, documenting the artist’s process. Each photograph becomes a part of Soleimani’s rich visual storytelling.      \n\n*Flyways *presents a series of new photographs that include images evocative of her family’s history and migration story in juxtaposition with images of injured birds that are representative of Soleimani’s work as a wildlife rehabilitator. (In 2018\, Soleimani founded Congress of Birds\, a wild bird rehabilitation center in Rhode Island.) The change in her practice to include bird rescue results in a revolutionary body of work steeped in passion and articulated in a completely original visual language. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Materia Magica: Materiality and Ritual in the Greco-Roman World
DESCRIPTION:View a diverse array of artifacts which were created to communicate with and call upon various unseen\, supernatural forces for aid and protection. While the objects on display are disparate at first glance\, ranging from lead tablets and amulets to papyrus and parchment leaves\, they all share a common thread: they have long been labeled as \"magical\" in traditional Western scholarship.\n\nHowever\, each of these artifacts is better understood on a broad spectrum of ancient ritual\, from subversive and transgressive acts to highly social and visible ones. The exhibit highlights the objects’ oft-overlooked material dimensions\, asking us to consider how qualities like color\, texture\, and weight shaped an object’s perceived efficacy and meaning. \n\nThis exhibit was a collaboration\, and displays items from several University of Michigan units: the library’s Special Collections Research Center and Papyrology Collection\, the Museum of Natural History\, and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. DESCRIPTION:About the exhibition\nDiane Lavoie’s large-scale textile artworks are made entirely from up-cycled materials and are often placed in direct visual conversation with the natural landscape. Through the artist's choice of materials and visual subject matter\, the springtime installation *Momentary Landscape* is intended to emphasize important work surrounding sustainability\, climate change\, and environmental issues through the arts. The project is scheduled to unfold in the lobby of the South Thayer Building during exam week\, offering students and visitors a restorative\, reflective\, and joyful experience through public art installation.\n\nAbout the artist\nDiane Lavoie is a North American visual artist based in Berlin\, Germany. Her art represents a dialogue between the natural and artificial world\, and explores the boundaries between reality and perception. In her practice\, Lavoie creates large-scale\, textile representations of natural environments in contrast and connection with the actual environs surrounding them. Lavoie holds an MFA in painting from California State University Long Beach and a BFA in illustration from Massachusetts College of Art. Her work has been exhibited internationally and is held in private and public collections in the US and Europe.

DESCRIPTION:Becoming is the senior thesis project of Stamps School of Art & Design student Elsa Olander. It is a multidisciplinary exhibition that traces her artistic evolution from high school student in Kenya to graduating college senior in the U.S. It explores personal growth through material experimentation\, identity formation\, and cultural hybridity. The work features 2-D\, 3-D\, and 4-D work\; each piece serving as a visual artifact of transformation.\n\nBecoming isn’t about arriving. It’s about highlighting the moments that get us there. The doubt\, discovery\, and growth that shape who we are. It’s a reminder to learn from the past and plan for the future\, but most importantly to live in the present. We become who we are not just through all the choices we make\, but through the people we surround ourselves with\, the information we take-in\, and what we choose to believe or question.\n\n“This exhibition is about my growth and process\, but it’s not singular. Many of my family members\, including my mother\, aren’t able to attend my graduation due to the ongoing visa ban affecting several African countries. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Life After Grad School Seminars | Beyond the Chatbot: Making Agentic AI Useful for Engineering
DESCRIPTION:The evolution of Large Language Models (LLMs) has shifted from simple text generation to the \"agentic\" paradigm—where AI doesn't just describe solutions but actively executes them. However\, for AI to tackle quantitative domains including automotive engineering it requires more than just language\; specialized toolkits are needed to navigate complex 3D environments and satisfy rigorous physics constraints.  In this talk\, I introduce Datum\, a San Francisco-based startup building the bridge between agentic AI and physical engineering. I will explore how we enable AI agents to search 3D geometries and automate physics simulations\, putting decades of institutional knowledge and computational rigor at every engineer’s fingertips. To conclude\, I will share reflections on the current job market and search process\, offering a founder's perspective on what it means to build—and find—a career at the frontier of this new technology.\n\nBIO:\nKevin Nelson is a Founding Engineer at Datum Systems Inc\, a San Francisco-based startup specializing in AI agents for engineering design.\n\nBefore Datum\, Kevin spent 11 years in particle physics research\, starting at the College of William and Mary before coming to Michigan for his PhD and postdoctoral research with the ATLAS experiment.  His research applied geometric deep learning to beyond the standard model searches in the Higgs sector.  Now\, at Datum he applies the same techniques to artificial intelligence.  When not working on AI\, you can usually find him out for a run in the beautiful San Francisco weather.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Learning\, Salience\, and Voting: Evidence from Criminal Politicians in India (with Siddharth George and Sarika Gupta)
DESCRIPTION:We study how voters process information through two experiments around Indian elections. In a large-scale experiment\, we show that providing voters information about candidates’ criminal charges increases votes for clean candidates and reduces votes for criminal politicians\, with larger penalties for candidates facing more and serious charges. A follow-up experiment replicates these results and identifies two mechanisms. First\, information facilitates learning: voters form more accurate beliefs and evaluate criminal candidates less favorably. Second\, using direct measures of voter attention\, we show that information makes criminality more salient\, and increases its weight in voting decisions. Salience effects are larger when information is surprising or highlights contrast\, but do not vary with decision relevance\, consistent with bottom-up attention. Causal forest estimates provide further evidence that learning and salience are both important drivers of changes in voting behavior. We develop a simple model that integrates salience theory into a standard probabilistic voting framework to explain our results.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Imaging Chemical Reactions and Processes
DESCRIPTION:Imaging chemical reactions under synthetically relevant conditions can reveal mechanistic information that is inaccessible with traditional analytical techniques. Our laboratory develops fluorescence microscopy methods—including fluorescence intensity and fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM)—to understand chemical reactivity and physical processes in complex reaction media with spatial and temporal resolution. We examine aqueous–organic reactions\, oxidative addition to metal powders\, and catalytic polymerization. These systems present particular challenges to traditional characterization methods: aqueous–organic emulsions are heterogeneous and optically opaque\, organometallic surface intermediates in oxidative–addition reactions do not substantially build up\, and many growing polymers are insoluble or spatially heterogenous. In these systems\, FLIM reveals object sizes\, catalyst localization and environments\, the role of reagents\, and the physiochemical reasons underpinning catalytic turnover rates. For example\, droplet-to-droplet differences in emulsions under cross-coupling conditions suggest that individual droplets function as distinct reaction vessels.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:FAST Lecture | Excavating Ancient Humayma\, Past and Present
DESCRIPTION:The site of Humayma in southern Jordan has been under excavation since 1986. Those explorations uncovered a Nabataean village\, one of the earliest Roman forts in the Roman provenance of Arabia\, and several churches and mosques on the approximately 1-square-kilometer site. Yet much remains unknown about the daily life of Humayma’s Classical-period residents\, the funerary landscape\, and urban industry in a peripheral\, arid landscape. This lecture will discuss what 30 years of archaeological work has discovered about the site\, under the direction of John Oleson and M. Barbara Reeves\, and the recently renewed project\, directed by Craig Harvey (PhD\, University of Michigan)\, Sarah Wenner\, and Amanda Hardman. \n\nSarah Wenner\, Ph.D. (Classical Archaeology\, University of Cincinnati\, 2023)\, is the jointly appointed assistant professor of archaeology at the American Center of Research (Amman\, Jordan) and provenance researcher and object historian at the Cincinnati Art Museum. In Jordan\, where she has worked for well over a decade\, Wenner serves as the associate director of the Humayma Excavation Project and assistant director of the Petra Garden and Pool Project. Currently\, she is editing an exhibition catalogue on ancient queenship of the eastern Mediterranean and West Asia in the 1st millennium BCE and the final report for the Roman Street Project. Her work explores the making of Roman cities through the recycling of urban waste.\n\nFAST (Field Archaeology Series on Thursday) Lectures are free and open to the public. This event will take place in Room 125 of the Kelsey Museum’s Newberry Hall. DESCRIPTION:Ann Arbor’s Brain Plasticity Ukulele Collective is a proudly intergenerational group\, sharing instruments\, knowledge\, kindness\, and talent across eras. Instruments you might hear in the music of the collective include not only ukuleles but also guitar\, flute\, percussion\, harmonica\, accordion\, mandolin\, mandola\, bass\, piano\, and melodica. The group is inspired by the idea that music cuts across diverse cognitive capabilities and resources\, including numeracy\, language\, and space perception.\n\nMike Brooks\, veteran blues guitar player/singer/songwriter from the UK has been playing guitar since the age of 10\, and professionally since the age of 16. His musical career and accolades are many and varied\, but include hitting the UK charts in 1979 (#28 on “the New Wave of British Heavy Metal” despite being a blues band)\, getting a cease and desist order from Walt Disney Corp for using a band name too close to that of a cartoon mouse\, opening for bands such as the Yardbirds\, the Animals\, Wishbone Ash and Nine Below Zero\, and playing in some of the most famous venues anywhere such as London’s Marquee\, and\, well\, The Ark! In addition to leading BLUESHOUSE and fronting the Brain Plasticity Ukulele Collective\, he also works with Ann Arbor’s youth at the Neutral Zone\, a continuation of a youth music project begun in the UK called Electric896\, which taught disengaged youth how to rock the blues.
