DESCRIPTION:\n\nAugust 24 - October 18\, 2026\nExhibition Reception: October 1\, 1-2:30 p.m.\n\nIn their second year\, Stamps students complete a major milestone: Second Year Studio (SYS). It’s a course where\, per the syllabus\, students \"develop the capacity to work independently by identifying\, exploring\, and pursuing a single independent project that involves multiple iterations.\" \n\nStamps Lecturer & Student Exhibitions Coordinator Sally Clegg notes\, \"Each student takes their own path\, encountering questions that can shape the direction of their creative practice—how do I manage my time? How much constraint vs. freedom do I thrive on? What subject matter do I care about most deeply? How do my ideas about my future goals intersect with the work I want to make now?\" At the end of the semester\, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review\, and a faculty panel offers individualized feedback. \n\nInstalled throughout the Art & Architecture Building\, the Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases the art and design work created in this pivotal course by our rising third-year and transfer students\, and invites first-year students and other newcomers to explore both the building and the creative possibilities ahead. The show features 50 students who have volunteered to participate\, yet it honors every Stamps major who reaches the SYS milestone. The pieces on view span a wide array of media and capture a specific moment in each maker’s path: experiments in previously unfamiliar methods\, emergent passions\, creative risks taken\, iterations and reiterations\, and the seeds of so much future work.\n\nAs Course Coordinator\, Stamps Assistant Professor Pedram Baldari both teaches and works directly with all the faculty overseeing each section to collaboratively support the entire class. He offers this reflection on the diverse collection of work on view in this year’s exhibition.\n\nThese works engage a wide range of questions and concerns. Students investigate memory\, identity\, materiality\, ecology\, technology\, labor\, social relationships\, and the built environment through equally diverse formal approaches. While these subjects recur across the exhibition\, what stands out most is not a dominant thematic direction\, but a shared commitment to sustained inquiry.\n\nSYS is intentionally structured around a different learning model than project-based courses. Rather than responding to predetermined assignments\, students identify their own questions and spend an entire semester developing them through research\, experimentation\, critique\, and multiple iterations. The emphasis is not on arriving quickly at a resolved outcome\, but on cultivating the capacity to work independently\, remain responsive to new discoveries\, and allow the project itself to evolve through sustained engagement.\n\nAs a result\, the exhibition presents more than a collection of finished works. It documents different ways of investigating\, testing\, and refining ideas. Some students advance through material experimentation\, others through drawing\, installation\, performance\, digital media\, social engagement\, or speculative approaches. Each project reflects a distinct methodology that has developed through repeated cycles of making\, reflection\, critique\, and revision. In a sense\, the dialectical process generated by the nature of this course is the most significant thread connecting this year’s exhibition. DESCRIPTION:Camille Ann Brewer lives and works in the City of Detroit\, Michigan.  Through the process of textile construction\, Brewer’s artwork intersects cartographic and photographic images that speak to specific spaces and time. Weaving together of physical place\, memory with time is the core subject of this body of work.  \n\nThe artwork is built with time-period paper maps\, which illustrate spatial geography and political territory\; along with paper-collaged images of people\, places and things\, which tie directly to the history and human relationships in space.  In patterns that support the artwork’s theme\, the two disparate paper elements are then woven together to create a serendipitous making and aesthetic experience.

DESCRIPTION:There are nearly one million refugees currently living in Poland. While the vast majority arrived from Ukraine\, Poland has also welcomed forcibly displaced people from Central Asia\, Latin America\, Africa\, and the Middle East. While refugees may be different\, they all search for a place that reminds them of home.\nIn *This Is The Place*\, a project supported by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR)\, Anna Liminowicz asked refugees to show what\, in Poland\, reminds them of their home. These portraits and the personalized confessions her subjects handwrote in their native languages tell poignant stories about safety and hope.\nAnna Liminowicz is an award-winning photographer and reportage journalist based in Warsaw\, Poland. A frequent contributor to the *The New York Times*\, *The Guardian*\, *The Wall Street Journal*\, *The Washington Post*\, *El Pais*\, *Der Spiegel* and UNHCR\, Liminowicz divides her time  between assignments and long-term personal projects\, mainly focusing on social issues like identity and loss\, and what uplifts her subjects. She has covered the war in Ukraine and Ukrainian refugees in Poland since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion\, and received the 2022 Grand Press Photo Award for her project “Too Precious to Leave Behind”.\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us. Created by Jessie Horton Koessler (Class of 1901) to help fund the Michigan League building for women\, this celebrated map provides a fascinating view into 1920s campus life and the women who shaped it. DESCRIPTION:Lila Kadaj received her MFA from Wayne State University. Her work has been shown at numerous institutions\, including the Detroit Institute of Arts\, the Cranbrook Art Museum\, and the Arab American National Museum.  She spent nearly 27 years teaching art at Detroit Public schools.\n\nArtist statement: “When looking at a beautiful flower.  It’s just itself.  Just there......no .....it does not proclaim its purpose for blooming is to make people happy. It just is. Like standing in front of an easel and painting........just is.......no matter......what proclamations may be concluded to sway the viewer. Same thing goes for fine art.  It’s not about I am a woman....it’s not about I am a first generation Arab American.....it’s not about being a child of trauma....it’s not about a member of my family being gunned down on the street....it’s about being born a painter.....standing in front of my easel and working to create a \"Piece of Fine Art\". Not standing on some soap box and expecting my words to somehow qualify my painting. It’s the painting\, drawing or sculpture that must speak on its own.......on how the artist......via the intellect and muse uses the elements to create something distinct and first rate.   It can be quiet or loud. I see so much very weak work uplifted not for its quality but because it’s in fashion.”

SUMMARY:Exhibition:WCEE Exhibition. The Art of Memory\, Paintings by Felix Lembersky
DESCRIPTION:Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter\, theater stage designer\, teacher\, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar\, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons\, these paintings\, along with his later nonconformist work\, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars\, the 1917 revolution\, and political terror\, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable\, neglected\, and marginalized people: children\, the elderly\, ethnic minorities\, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances\, Lembersky  portrayed his subjects with empathy\, dignity\, and admiration.  \n\n“For my father\, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Art Exhibit: Hands on Fire
DESCRIPTION:Jim Cogswell: Hands on Fire\n\n**August 31 to October 9\, 2026**\n**Public Reception: Friday\, September 18\, 4:30 to 6:30 pm**\n\nJim Cogswell’s Hands on Fire is a solo exhibition of mixed media drawings at the Residential College Gallery at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. The exhibition features sixty works on paper completed between 2024 and 2026.\n\nThis body of work responds to Greek Cypriot filmmaker Michael Cacoyannis’ cinematic adaptations of three tragedies by Euripides dealing with the Trojan War and its aftermath: Electra (1962)\, The Trojan Women (1971)\, and Iphigenia (1977). The work is in close conversation with Vinyl Euripides (2022)\, Cogswell’s adhesive vinyl installation on three floors of the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation in Athens\, Greece\, which also responded to the cinematic trilogy. By following Cacoyannis’ adaptations\, Cogswell builds on a cross-cultural history of restaging these tragedies to examine the human suffering caused by war\, imperial overreach\, and abuse of power\; and the dehumanizing consequences of revenge as a course of justice.\n\nWithin each drawing multiple scenes from the three narratives are overlaid within single frames\, suggesting the unseen entanglements that bind these ancient stories into such a persistent vision of our human position.\n\nThe grid of paintings encircling the gallery proposes a linear narrative but delivers instead a sequence that loops and turns on itself\, a stuck frame that stutters until bursting in flames. The grid also evokes the net that is a central feature of the series--the web of fate and circumstance that governs each of our lives\, that determines who we are and what is possible for us at any given moment in history.\n\nThe drawings are also characterized by a repeated motif of hands as consuming flames. Hands have unlimited expressive and narrative potential. They testify to the centrality of making in the development of human cognition. They are reminders of the constructed world and the laborers responsible for bringing it into being. We use hands as a form of communication to shape and express our inner states. Hands teach us to feel and to reason\, to count and to indicate. They give us agency\, as creators but also as destroyers. DESCRIPTION:The Institute for the Humanities’ presentation of Cosmo Whyte’s* Ballad for Rodney* (2024) is organized as part of Whyte’s upcoming solo exhibition at the Stamps Gallery entitled *Cosmo Whyte: Under the Quiet\, Beyond the Eye*.\n\nThis “curtain painting” operates simultaneously as painting and sculpture\, inviting the viewer to physically engage with the surface\, passing through to another layer underneath. \n\nAbout the artist\nCosmo Whyte (b. 1982\, St. Andrew\, Jamaica) is an interdisciplinary artist who employs drawing\, installation\, and sculpture to create conceptual work exploring interstitial subjectivity through an engagement with both intimate and public archives\, as well as Black spatiality and forms of resistance. He received his MFA from the University of Michigan. In 2022\, he joined the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture as an assistant professor.\n\n\nWhyte’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally\, including at MOCA Georgia\, Atlanta\, GA\; Museum of Contemporary Art\, Chicago\, IL\; The High Museum of Art\, Atlanta\, GA\; The Drawing Center\, New York\, NY\; Atlanta Contemporary\, Atlanta\, GA\; Centre Georges Pompidou\, Paris\, France\; and the National Gallery of Jamaica\, Kingston\, Jamaica\, among others. His work is in public museum collections including the High Museum\, Atlanta\, GA\; Museum of Contemporary Art\, Chicago\, IL\; International African American Museum\, Charlotte\, NC\; MOCA Georgia\, Atlanta\, GA\; National Gallery of Jamaica\; Pérez Art Museum Miami\, among others. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Grand Vision
DESCRIPTION:Visiting artist Olayami Dabls is a storyteller\, curator\, educator\, and mentor. He is the founder of the MBAD African Bead Museum in Detroit. Through material culture\, Dabls presents commentary on the past\, present\, and future from African and African-American perspectives\, with the understanding that generations of African ancestors used visual materials to convey information about their identity as well as send messages for healing and protection. Dabls is a luminary\; for decades he has re-imagined what a museum space can be\, accessible to everyone\, free from the underpinnings of colonialism and the Western\, often white\, frame. *Grand Vision* includes a conceptual installation in the Gallery\, presenting Dabls’s own work in visual conversation with African beads and artifacts from Dabls’s Bead Museum collections. \n\nAdditionally\, Dabls’s iconic outdoor sculpture *Iron Teaching Rocks Table Manners* will be installed on the U-M campus grounds near UMMA\, at the intersection of State Street and South University from September 17- October 11\, 2026. The project’s range intends to more fully articulate the many facets of Dabls’ creative practice\, and the overlay of art\, history\, identity\, community\, and healing.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Fore-Site (Phase 3): The Stamps Gallery Pillar Project
DESCRIPTION:\n\nFrom September 2025 through December 2026\, Stamps Gallery is partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Southeast Michigan-based\, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. Studios\, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator\, MFA ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20)\; and Sometimes Space\, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I\, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions\, performances\, and events\, fostering experimental work and building community. For this project\, Byrne\, Clegg\, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery. In response\, they’ve curated six artists to create new work for the pillars over three cycles:\n\nPhase 1 (September 12 - December 12) artists: Amelia Burns (Cranbrook MFA ’23) and Erin McKenna (MFA ’20)\nPhase 2 (January 12 - August 12) artists: Sally Clegg (MFA ’20) and Kim Karlsrud (MFA ’20)\nPhase 3 (September 11 - December 11) artists: Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20) and Nathan Byrne (MFA ’21)\nPhase 3 \n\nCurated by Sometimes Space: Abhishek Narula (entry pillar)\nCurated by CYNK Studios: Nathan Byrne (courtyard pillar)\n\nArtist Statements/Bios\n\nAbhishek Narula\, Compressions \nCompressions is an installation comprised of 416 industrial-grade zip ties\, cinched around the entry pillar of the Stamps Gallery. The pillar measures roughly 110 inches in circumference\, requiring two ties per row to wrap around it\, resulting in 208 rows. The humble zip tie\, typically used to hang and bind other material\, is relegated to its functional properties rendering it unprepossessing and easily dismissed. The zip tie in this installation\, instead serves as an object of aesthetic possibility\, pulling it out of its usual background role to become the work itself. The resulting composition is a proposal to dwell\, to slow down\, and to simply see the pillar.\n\nAbhishek Narula is an artist\, designer\, and educator who works across sculpture\, installation\, sound\, and video. His practice takes the form of interventions\, working with what is already present. He reorients and disrupts objects and sites in order to open up formal possibilities and poetic experiences within the familiar. He is influenced by physical and digital infrastructural systems that sustain modern life and culture. His work treats this ambience itself as raw material for aesthetic inquiry\, exploring themes of labor\, precarity\, temporality and the sublime. Narula earned his MFA in Studio Art from the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design and his MS/BS in Electrical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. His work has been exhibited at national and international venues such as the Ammerman Center for Arts and Technology\, Science Gallery Detroit\, Speculum Artium Media Festival in Slovenia\, New Media Caucus (NMC)\, WaveFarm\, The Boulder Public Library\, The Hyde Park Art Center\, Sector 2337 Art Gallery & Printing Press\, Tangible Embedded Interaction (TEI)\, International Symposium of Electronic Arts (ISEA)\, among others. He is a Robotics Systems Designer and Lecturer in the Robotics Department at the University of Michigan. Website / Instagram\n\nNathan Byrne\, Equally To Be Loved\nEqually To Be Loved is an image / object scaled to and installed upon the courtyard pillar of Stamps Gallery. The image is of a spontaneous sculpture made in 2017 during the first day of an artist residency at the Recology San Francisco A.I.R. Program. The sculpture was constructed in a storage container studio using 14 discrete objects that were in his studio upon entry. For Byrne\, this work embodies the energy and spirit of a studio at the start of a particularly fecund period of making. This work speaks to the artist’s interest in embodied experience of space\, archival and site responsiveness\, as well as his ongoing engagement with found materials. Byrne considers this project to be a far-flung sequel to his MFA thesis exhibition Equally Empty\, which was shown at Stamps Gallery in 2021. Equally To Be Loved is the second line of the Buddhist mantra from which both titles are derived.\n\nNathan Byrne is an artist / educator / curator currently based in Detroit\, MI. Through spatial and archive responsive projects\, he reimagines\, and explores within frameworks such as language\, the passage of time\, and contemplation. Intrigued by the potential of conveying phenomenal\, transformative\, and emotive states through materiality\, process\, and placement\, he negotiates the pliability of the viewer’s encounters with objects and environments. Byrne holds an MFA in Art from the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design and a BA in Studio Art and Art History from San Francisco State University. He has been a Lecturer at Stamps School of Art & Design since the Fall of 2022. His work is exhibited widely nationally and he is a recipient of the VSC Fellowship at Vermont Studio Center. He has been awarded numerous artist residencies including Anderson Ranch Arts Center\, I-Park\, KHN Center for the Arts\, Prairie Ronde\, Recology San Francisco A.I.R. Program\, and Rockland Woods. DESCRIPTION:Changes over the course of the nineteenth century in how Americans voted\, from voice vote to public ballot box to private voting booth\, also saw changes in the material culture that surrounded voting. Ballots and ballot boxes\, campaign pins and ribbons\, blank lists and pre-printed party tickets\, lanterns and banners–the creative forces of the American print industry filled the country’s cities and small towns with the ephemera of electioneering.\n\nAs you look at the items in this exhibit\, think about what they tell us about how Americans in the past felt about voting\, and about how voting felt. How did Election Days feel when they were full of parades and music and public drinking? What was it like to vote when everyone around you knew who you voted for? DESCRIPTION:\n\nCurated by Srimoyee Mitra\n\nStamps Gallery kicks off the fall 2026 semester with an ambitious mid-career survey of interdisciplinary artist Cosmo Whyte. Born and raised in Jamaica\, Whyte completed a BFA from Bennington College and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan. He is currently a faculty member at the School of the Arts and Architecture\, UCLA.\n\nThis exhibition brings together two central concerns that animate Whyte’s artistic practice: the archive\, both personal and public\, as a site of disturbance\; and migration as a lived experience of refuge\, refusal\, and reinvention. In Whyte’s work\, the archive is never static or neutral. Rather\, it is a contested space where official histories encounter memory\, inheritance\, and the fragments of stories carried across generations. His practice moves within this charged interstitial terrain\, between what has been recorded and what has been remembered\, between institutional knowledge and embodied experience. Whyte invites the viewer to consider the fluidity of geographic borders and layered cultural identities that have persisted despite societal unrest caused by racial and socio-economic hierarchies across generations. In an era of intensified border politics and renewed debates over national identity\, Whyte’s work offers a timely meditation on memory\, movement\, and belonging.\n\nPresented with support from the U-M Institute for Humanities\, the U-M LSA Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies\, and the U-M Library.

Light refreshments are provided. \n\n*Exhibition Description*\nThis photo exhibition features 90 curated images from the UNESCO-inscribed May 18 Archives. Documenting the May 18–27\, 1980 democratization uprising in Gwangju\, South Korea\, the collection captures the shift from peaceful student protests to military violence and unified citizen resistance\, carried out under a complete blackout as civilians and photojournalists risked their lives to photograph atrocities and smuggle film past cordons. Beyond serving as historical artifacts\, these preserved visual truths offer a living blueprint for popular resilience against authoritarianism\, transforming local trauma into a universal defense of human rights. Displaying these records at Michigan bridges 1980 Gwangju with our present moment\, inviting viewers to engage past resistance in the ongoing effort to defend democracy today.\n\n*Exhibition Composition*\nThe exhibit will be composed of a visual narrative comprised of six chronological sections and two additional special sections:\n\n1. Protest (May 5–16\, 1980): \nFollowing the collapse of Park Chung-hee’s military dictatorship in October\, 1979\, Gwangju students and citizens held peaceful rallies for campus autonomy and the end of martial law. Photos from this era show orderly marches and hopeful faces\, capturing a society on the brink of change before the structural contradictions shifted toward state-led violence. \n\n2. Suppression (May 18–19\, 1980): \nA new junta government led by Chun Doo-hwan extended martial law to the entire country on May 17. Students at Chonnam National University protested against the new junta government’s decision. State violence escalated as paratroopers\, who were deployed to Gwangju\, engaged student protesters. Streets became scenes of brutal beatings and kidnappings. Beyond documenting victims\, the images on display in this section serve as primary historical evidence and legal proof of the military's methods and the sudden transformation of citizens into targets of control. \n\n3. Uprising (May 20–21\, 1980): \nThe movement shifted into a popular struggle. Vehicles lined up in Gwangju’s main thoroughfare\, Geumnam-ro. This massive vehicle parade symbolized the people becoming active subjects of resistance. The military was given the order to use live ammunition against civilians. In reaction\, the city became a space of voluntary mobilization and citizens emerged as historical political actors. \n\n4. Resistance (May 22–26\, 1980): \nWhile isolated and cut off from communications\, Gwangju established an autonomous system of self-governance. Photos in this section testify to the efforts made to establish a sense of order based on solidarity—sharing food and donating blood—rather than chaos. The formation of this \"Daedong (Great Unity) Community\" and the visual documentation thereof serve as foundations of democracy in South Korea. \n\n5. Massacre (May 27\, 1980): \nThe uprising was crushed by a dawn military operation. While the armed resistance ended\, the resulting photographs of the aftermath reveal the stark reality of the massacre. These images became the catalyst for future truth-seeking movements and the pursuit of historical justice in South Korea. \n\n6. Mourning: \nScenes of coffins\, portraits\, and silent vigils represent a collective ethical gaze. During this period\, mourning was more than a display of grief\; it was a communal act used to redefine the city’s identity and establish new moral standards for justice.\n\n7. Special Section A: The Photographers\nThis special section highlights the domestic and international photographers who documented the uprising. This includes Korean journalists alongside US journalists Robin Moyer and Norman Thorpe\, French correspondents Patrick Chauvel and François Lochon\, and German cinematographer Jürgen Hinzpeter. Their images transcend simple reporting\, reflecting a moral commitment to record and a historical duty to ensure remembrance. Rather than viewing these photos solely as evidence\, the exhibition reinterprets them through a lens of photographic history—examining their context\, distribution\, and how they transformed raw records into social truth and collective memory.\n\n8. Special Section B: The Peace Corps: Americans Who Helped Gwangju\nWhen Gwangju was isolated under martial law in May 1980\, four American Peace Corps volunteers—Tim Warnberg\, David Lee Dolinger\, Judi Chamberlin\, and Paul Courtright—refused to leave\, choosing instead to assist the wounded\, aid foreign journalists\, and ultimately expose the truth to the world. Those pivotal ten days reshaped their lives into lifelong commitments to human rights\, inspiring decades of memoirs\, academic writings\, and testimonies. Through photographs\, video footage\, and personal records\, this section traces their journey from eyewitnesses to active defenders of human dignity\, inviting us to reflect on what it truly means to take a stand in the face of another’s suffering. \n\nTwo additional events programmed in conjunction with this photo exhibition\n1. DESCRIPTION:I will present results from the current state of the art of the numerical conformal bootstrap: bootstrapping the stress tensor\, both for the 3D Ising CFT in particular and in the space of all local\, unitary 3D CFTs in general. Beyond the headline result for the Ising CFT — the most precise determinations of the leading scaling dimensions and OPE coefficients yet — I will present some preliminary results in analyzing the extremal functional spectrum for the Ising CFT. As for the space of all local\, unitary 3D CFTs\, I will present bounds which present nontrivial and puzzling features which motivate a proposed program of “CFT Cartography.” Based on arXiv:2411.15300\, arXiv:2602.13383\, and ongoing work.

DESCRIPTION:Complex geometry is a cornerstone of contemporary mathematics\; convex geometry\, by contrast\, has remained fairly niche since its modern inception in the early 20th century. Nonetheless\, the two subjects are related by numerous extremely deep correspondences. Even more bizarrely\, these correspondences tend to end up being more \"useful\" on the complex side\, suggesting that there is some \"structure\" on the complex side that is somehow more naturally analyzed through its convex counterpart. In this talk\, we will sample some results from this fascinating history before discussing a \"convex\" approach to studying Kähler–Einstein metrics.

DESCRIPTION:Consider an invariant that behaves nicely for smooth varieties\, such as Euler number\, Betti numbers\, or Hodge numbers. Suppose we want a version of this invariant for singular varieties that sees interesting information about the singularities. I will discuss how this naturally leads to the notion of crepant resolutions of singularities. However\, crepant resolutions (by varieties) are rare in practice. I will discuss joint work with M. Satriano in which we show that crepant resolutions actually exist in broad generality\, as long as one is willing to consider algebraic stacks. Specifically\, any variety with log-terminal singularities admits a crepant resolution by a smooth algebraic stack. As one consequence\, in joint work with J. Huang and M. Satriano\, we obtain a cohomological interpretation for Batyrev's stringy Hodge numbers. This talk will not assume familiarity with stacks.

DESCRIPTION:Jianzhi (George) Zhang is a Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology interested in the relative roles of chance and necessity in evolution. He got his B. S. from Fudan University in Shanghai\, China\, and his Ph. D. in Genetics from Pennsylvania State University. He was a  Fogarty postdoctoral fellow at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases before moving to the University of Michigan.\n\nAbstract\n\nAdaptive evolution proceeds through beneficial nucleotide substitutions in the genome\, yet the number of such substitutions (N) required to reach a local or global fitness peak where no single mutation further increases fitness remains unknown. Here we estimate N by simulating adaptive walks on two large\, complete\, multi-environment adaptive landscapes inferred from massive empirical data using machine learning\, with validation from smaller experimentally mapped landscapes. We find that N rises linearly with the number of variable sites (L) in the landscape\, regardless of prior adaptation in another environment. Extrapolation suggests a minimal N of 10^5 for typical prokaryotes and 10^7 for mammals. By contrast\, in highly rugged shuffled landscapes\, N is markedly reduced\, while fitness gains also shrink. The relatively smooth empirical landscapes therefore enable greater fitness gains while lengthening adaptive walks\, rendering even local fitness peaks effectively unreachable before environments change. These results explain the persistence of fitness gains in long-term evolution experiments and the widespread occurrence of beneficial mutations across species. They suggest that populations continuously adapt while remaining far from fitness optima\, challenging the long-held view that adaptation culminates at fitness peaks.

The late historian Hayden White called Zari a \"radical visionary\,\" as every mode of Zari's work challenges existing notions of what \"is.\" Whether ballet or vernacular\, slang or scholarship\, Zari uses languages that work towards liberation. She has performed extensively with DANCE ELIXIR since its founding in 2003.\n\nJOHN MACDOUGALL PARKER\, Music Collaborator and Performer\nJohn MacDougall Parker creates improvisational future-folk compositions where sound is amalgamated and congealed into a resolution of crossed signals. He has devised instruments focused on the interface between humans and machines\, which are arranged to make music in the moment. Parker\, of American and Korean origin\, floats between NYC and São Paulo.\n\nSCOTT TALLENGER\, Costumes\nScott Tallenger is a Left-Handed/Right Brained\, photographer\, skateboarder and fashion designer. DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Recently the TCS query learning ala Nisan--Mansur--Linial got the boost from a harmonic analysis random algorithm. This problem has a non-commutative version where one needs to learn a very big matrix (so-called d-local hamiltonians) from  a few random queries.\nThe corresponding harmonic analysis results have a drawback that it is still not known how tight they are. We will discuss this and show tightness for some of them. Interestingly\, one such tightness result is closely related to Einstein--Podolsky--Rosen paradox from quantum mechanics. On a close issue: arguably the main problem in understanding the speed up  of quantum algorithms versus classical ones for a certain collection of problems (called Aaronson--Ambainis conjecture and still open) will be discussed too if time permits.

DESCRIPTION:We obtain quantitative estimates on quenched propagation of chaos for Langevin spin glass dynamics with i.i.d. disorder. Prior work in the case of Gaussian disorder established the qualitative convergence of the law of a single spin to a deterministic McKean--Vlasov limit. We prove convergence rates in expected Wasserstein distance and quantitative concentration rates for Lipschitz observables under the assumption that the disorder satisfies the T_2 inequality. The proof uses a coupling argument\, together with techniques from concentration of measure\, filtering theory\, and Malliavin calculus.

The workshop also introduces participants to on-campus resources and provides knowledge on how sexual misconduct can unfold in graduate-specific settings.The ERC workshop uses small-group circles intended to promote active reflection and space to build community. The procedure of circles is introduced at the beginning of the workshop in order to help participants get used to the process\, which they do through a circle for introductions and value-sharing for the workshop space. These circles depict various\, realistic scenarios related to sexual misconduct within the graduate community. The circle process allows circle members to process the monologues\, reflect on complexities with identity and power dynamics within them\, name potential barriers to intervention\, and think of various ways in which they might respond if faced with similar situations. The circles provide a way to foster collective building of ideas\, where participants learn from one another and all input is equally valued. Participants are encouraged to share but can always pass if desired\, creating an environment where participation is open but not forced. Due to the participatory nature of the workshop\, if you are to arrive more than 20 minutes late\, we will ask you to re-register for another workshop session.If you have any questions about or concerns with taking this workshop\, or are in need of an exemption\, please contact jhippe@umich.edu or fill out this form. Drawing on McCann's celebrated fiction and his work as co-founder of Narrative 4\, the discussion will explore how stories invite us to listen more deeply\, understand one another across differences\, and expand our sense of what it means to be human. Workshops will be offered at multiple locations and times throughout the fall semester\, so please sign up for the workshop that works for you!! First-Year Relationship Sexuality Talk (FYRST) FAQ:\n“How many workshops do I have to sign up for?”\nYou only need to sign up for 1 workshop. Attending 1 workshop will fulfill the requirement for the training. \n“I see that there is more than one session\, does it matter which one I sign up for?”\nIt generally does not matter which workshop you sign up for. There will be a few that are designated for specific groups such as transfer students or for students looking for accommodations. If you do not fit these groups please try to save these workshops for those that do and you are free to choose among any of the other workshops. \n“Is this workshop required?”\nThis workshop is required for all transfer and first-year students at the University of Michigan.\n“I’ve experienced harm around relationships or sexual experiences in the past and I am worried that attending this workshop may be harmful for me.” \nOur team is aware that students who are coming into the university that have experienced harm in the past.
