Organized By: Copernicus Center for Polish Studies

The glass in this rare collection represents the work of renowned Polish glass artists and designers created between 1960 and 1980. Known as Polskie szkło artystyczne (Polish art glass), the works were produced in glass factories in southern Poland and are a feature of many homes throughout Central Europe. The glass masters were trained in schools of art and design and many achieved international fame during their lifetimes.

The collectors, Endi Poskovic and his wife Julie Anne Visco, began acquiring the glass in 2015-16 while Endi was a Fulbright Scholar and Visiting Professor at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. Scouring flea markets, antique shops, and websites, they continue to acquire pieces and build the collection to this day. We are grateful to them for making this remarkable exhibit possible at CCPS and WCEE.

Organized by the Copernicus Center for Polish Studies, this exhibition is co-sponsored by the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design and Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia.

CES Exhibition. Camera as Passport: The Ship of Photographers (March 19, 2024 8:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/115990 115990-21835998@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, March 19, 2024 8:00am
Location: Weiser Hall
Organized By: Center for European Studies

Starting in 1933 when Hitler and the Nazis came to power, a cadre of European Jews—German, Polish, Hungarian, Austrian, French—discovered that a camera could be their passport, first out of Germany and then out of Europe. Some of these women and men had been planning one type of career—lawyer, journalist, painter, musician—but then realized that they needed to find another way to earn a living. Taking photographs presented a sufficiently malleable opportunity that not only allowed them to leave Germany and then Europe but also to have a means to sustain themselves in foreign countries where they did not necessarily speak the language.

They did, however, mobilize the visual language of photography. For a number of these figures, forced migration became an asset during the golden age of photojournalism wherein their portable services were employed to supply picture stories on the move and around the world. Many of these Jews became influential photographers, shaping how their contemporaries saw the world. Looking back on their work, we can see how they have influenced our understanding of the modern world even as we can recognize their photographs as a significant component of modern Jewish visual culture.

Of the dozens of photographers who fled Europe, eight escaped on a single ship. The S. S. Winnipeg sailed from Marseille, France on May 7, 1941. Germany had already conquered both eastern and western Europe and was poised to invade the Soviet Union. The United States was not yet in the war. Among the 750 refugees aboard were photographers from Hungary, Belgium, France, and Germany: Ilse Bing, Josef Breitenbach, Boris Lipnitsky, Charles Leirens, Yolla Niclas, Fred Stein, Monie Tannen, and Ylla (Camilla Henriette Koffler). During lifeboat drills, they discovered each other. Some of them narrowly escaped Vichy France under the auspices of the American journalist Varian Fry and the New York-based Emergency Rescue Committee that helped so many Jewish and anti-Fascist artists get out of Europe in the nick of time.

This exhibit introduces the University of Michigan to this intrepid group as exemplary case studies of the wide range of European photographers who used their cameras as passports to other worlds. It focuses first on their European experiences pre-emigration before turning to their escape from Europe on the S. S. Winnipeg (with three of them taking photos on board the ship). The exhibit concludes with examples of some of their initial photographic reactions to the new world, seeing it through European eyes.

If there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

Historically, maps have served as a panoptic technology, assisting imperial powers in governance, discipline, and control. In this exhibit, internationally renowned Filipino artist Cian Dayrit acts as a counter-cartographer, reclaiming mapmaking as an emancipatory activity.

Dayrit’s artworks, embroidered on textiles or painted over collages of colonial-era maps, plot the extraction of natural resources, land grabbing, and dispossession and displacement in his native Philippines. At the same time, their resistant lines summon new imaginaries out of the overlaps between places and memories.

Dayrit’s practice is critically and practically informed by the narratives of Filipino communities. Items exhibited alongside his artwork are the result of map-drawing workshops the artist has convened with rural, urban, and indigenous communities across the Philippines. Propositions to Progress invites you to engage in the collaborative endeavor to activate alternative territories from the ground up.

Cian Dayrit is an interdisciplinary artist exploring colonialism and ethnography, archaeology, history, and mythology. Dayrit subverts the language of the state, museum, and military to visualize the contradictions on which these institutions are built. He studied at the University of the Philippines.

This exhibit is an extension of Souq Stories (https://souqstories.insaniyyat.org/), which was displayed in 2021 in all seven of the historic markets it depicts in Gaza, Nazareth, Acre, Nablus, Jerusalem, Khalil, and Jaffa. Its youth group organizers aimed to bolster Palestinian unity across the systemic barriers — colonial divides, military checkpoints, walls, etc. — that fragment the lives of people living in Palestine.

Souq Stories: Gaza Lives brings us to present-day Gaza, sharing the stories of, and images captured by, young journalists and photographers who have continued to document the realities of life in Palestine. It also honors one among them, Fouad Abu Khammash, who was killed in January 2024 in an Israeli bomb attack on Gaza.

< The exhibit includes images of people suffering the aftermath of the ongoing violence. >

This exhibit was curated by Souq Stories team members Shareef Sarhan and Waed Abbas in partnership with U-M students Amir Marshi, Zainab Hakim, Mariam Odeh, and Vivian M. Nguyen. It’s offered in conjunction with this year’s Palestine Awareness Week, an annual series of educational events related to Palestinian history, culture, and politics. Presented in association with Insaniyyat: Society of Palestinian Anthropologists.

This small exhibit features work in reproduction by Iraqi artists Hanaa Malallah and Mohammed Karim, as well as an original painting by Karim. Both Malallah and Karim were significantly influenced by their mentors during and after their training in Iraq, and continue to share their work and ideas with a new generation today.

In the United States, Iraq is typically spoken about in a passive position: colonized, under despotic rule, occupied. Post-occupied. Through connections between mentors and students, and students who became mentors to new students, Iraqi artists have been a force for anti-colonialism, claiming their heritage and its future for themselves.

About the installation:
Garden Repairs is an installation of paper textiles that loosely narrate the life cycle of plants. It considers the process of germination as a site for the cross-pollination of ideas from diverse disciplines around the future of the built environment.

About the artist:
Susan Goethel Campbell creates multi-disciplinary work that considers the contemporary landscape to be an emergent system where nature, culture, and the engineered environment are indistinguishable from one another. Central to her practice is the collection, documentation, and observation of seasonal change and ephemera in both natural and artificial environments. Her work is realized in several formats, including installation, video, prints, and drawings, as well as projects that engage communities to look at local and global environments.

Campbell earned an MFA in printmaking from Cranbrook Academy of Art. Her work has been exhibited internationally in Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, and Slovenia and nationally throughout the US, including the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Queens Art Museum, Crystal Bridges Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, Grand Rapids Art Museum, the Detroit Institute of Arts, The Drawing Center, and The International Print Center New York. In 2009 she was one of 18 artists selected for the inaugural Kresge Artist Fellowship.

Campbell has been awarded residencies at the Banff Centre for the Arts, the Flemish Center for Graphic Arts, the Jentel Foundation, Beisinghoff Print Residency, and the Print Research Institute of North Texas. She taught studio art for 15 years at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit and has been a visiting artist in numerous institutions in the United States and abroad. Her work is in the collection of the National Museum of Women in the Arts, New York Public Library, Detroit Institute of Arts, Toledo Museum of Art, and the University of Michigan Special Collections Library.

This project is made possible by a grant from the Mellon Foundation as part of the Institute for the Humanities' multi-year High Stakes Art initiative.

My Gender States (March 19, 2024 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/116487 116487-21837085@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, March 19, 2024 9:00am
Location: Lane Hall
Organized By: Institute for Research on Women and Gender

On display at Lane Hall, Rogério M. Pinto (School of Social Work) invites audiences to take part in an exhibition that examines his embodied gender states based on his intersecting childhood traumas and life experiences. In "My Gender States," Pinto shares his deep and abiding grief related to the childhood death of his sister and the subsequent gender embodiments that ensued stemming from the belief that he was his deceased sister.

Using autoethnography, Pinto created a one-person play ("Marília," 2015) and site-specific installation performance ("The Realm of the Dead," 2022). These works explore the intersecting and shaping layers of childhood traumas, gender states, and his life experience—a story of the struggles, fears, and accomplishments he experienced as an immigrant to the United States. In "Realm," audiences circulated around 25 assemblage sculptures created from vintage suitcases and trunks that evoked the cemetery where Pinto’s sister was buried and the literal and figurative baggage that he, a queer immigrant, carried with him. "My Gender States" is a selection of materials, images, and texts from "Marília" and "Realm" curated to more closely examine the themes of gender and sexuality in these works. Collected are portrayals of Pinto’s gender states, gender confusion, gender embodiments, gender doubt, and reactions to gender stigma.

Rogério M. Pinto (Brazilian, American, b. 1965, Belo Horizonte, Brazil) is a University Diversity Social Transformation Professor; Berit Ingersoll-Dayton Collegiate Professor of Social Work; and Professor of Theatre and Drama, School of Music, Theatre & Dance, at the University of Michigan. Pinto uses art-based methods to conduct community-engaged research in the United States and Brazil.

The photographs used in "My Gender States" are by Emerson Granillo (American, b. 1987); David Newton (American, b. 1993); and Nicholas Williams (American, b. 1994). The "Realm" assemblages featured in "My Gender States" were conceived by Pinto and designed by him, in collaboration with Sarah Tanner.

"My Gender States" is on display in the Lane Hall Exhibit Space (first floor, 204 S State St) from January 23, to August 13, 2024. The exhibit is free and open to the public, M-F, 9am-4pm.

Hosted by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Women’s and Gender Studies Department.

Orson Welles as Family Man: Son, Husband, Father (March 19, 2024 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/115811 115811-21835620@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, March 19, 2024 9:00am
Location: Hatcher Graduate Library
Organized By: University Library

This exhibit provides a unique glimpse into the actor/director Orson Welles’ private life. Unlike previous U-M Library exhibits that focused on the artist at work, this display shows him in informal and familial environments, revealing a depth and complexity of character that are often overshadowed by his fame and professional achievements. The photographs and documents displayed showcase a variety of emotional tones — warmth, humor, tenderness, and passion. Candid and relaxed more than posed, they are similar to most people's pictures in old family albums.

Culled from the Orson Welles-Beatrice Welles materials that are part of the Mavericks & Makers collection within the U-M Library’s Special Collections Research Center, each photo or letter tells a story of a connection Welles held dearly. The materials included are from two periods: the late 1920s and early 1930s, when Welles was a teenager, and the mid-1950s to early 1960s, during the early years of his marriage to his third wife, Paola Mori.

It should be noted that Welles’s personal life was messy at best. Other collections housed at U-M that include personal materials related to Welles document his first and second marriages, including the Welles-Feder Collection and the Wilson-Welles Collection. The items on display here were saved by his third and final child, Beatrice Welles, and reflect her childhood memories of her parents.

The exhibit is available during Hatcher Gallery Exhibit Room hours (https://umlib.us/hatchergalleryexhibits).

Peter Dunn has historically been an object maker as a designer and sculptor. Whether designing furniture or developing the ideas for sculpture, the process has always been the same. Ideas begin as
scribbled images that are then stretched and refined with CAD software. At its core, much of the work studies the manipulation of simple geometry. Dunn looks at the form from different forced perspectives – exploding, augmenting, slicing, repeating, and lighting. This body of work is a study of perception, sympathy, hierarchy, and reality. The “We Are Virus” series is an adaptation from an initial design where it continued to evolve and adapt through manipulation of parts and scale.

Peter Dunn received his BFA from Wayne State University and MFA from University of Michigan. He currently serves on faculty at College for Creative Studies

What does an AI-driven future look like?

Overview: Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming every aspect of our society and revolutionizing academic research. Powerful new systems like Generative AI unlocks enormous potential to accelerate research, “mass produce” human knowledge, and enable humans to address previously unfathomable scientific questions and engineering challenges. Meanwhile, such potential is still largely speculative and initial successes are still limited in scope. Massive adoption of AI in science and engineering will be possible only after addressing numerous issues, and building infrastructure and capacity.

In this symposium, we bring together leading thinkers and researchers around the country to share their vision and work, in four themes.

1) Speeding Up Research – using AI to automate and accelerate research, such as experimental design optimization and accelerating the workflow.

2) The Nature of Creativity in Research – the role of the AI Researcher and the new role of the Human Researcher.

3) Trusting the AI Researcher – Upholding research rigor in AI-driven research and ensuring the validation of AI-driven discoveries, and aligning AI-driven discoveries with human values.

4) Expanding the Limit of the Human Researcher– using AI to ask previously unfathomable questions in a number of research fields.

The intended audience are researchers, trainees and the general public to this event regardless of the specific fields of their research and the focus of their intellectual pursuit.

Products from Pollution: Carbon Capture and Conversion (March 19, 2024 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/119221 119221-21842410@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, March 19, 2024 10:00am
Location: Matthaei Botanical Gardens
Organized By: Global CO2 Initiative

Phasing out fossil fuels is a primary means to fight climate change, but it alone is not enough. Even if all emissions ceased tomorrow, atmospheric CO2 levels are already dangerously high and the climate would keep warming before it eventually stabilizes. We have to reduce or “capture” legacy CO2 to avert disaster. As the International Panel on Climate Change stated, the *only* way we can meet our climate goal is to use carbon capture in our climate change fighting tool kit.

Many of the products that we use every day are made with carbon. Treating legacy CO2 as a resource with economic value rather than a pollutant allows us to generate revenue while also fighting climate change.

However, not all uses or types of captured CO2 are equal in terms of environmental or economic benefits. This exhibit includes a video game that helps explain the pros and cons associated with different methods and applications of carbon capture.

Additionally, it also provides examples of two types of carbon removal, an interactive block activity, and sample products made from captured CO2.

A Guessing Random Additive Noise Decoding (GRAND) Introduction (March 19, 2024 10:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/118369 118369-21840944@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, March 19, 2024 10:30am

In 1948, Claude Shannon, an alumni of the University of Michigan, published an opus that changed the world. Amongst many other things, he identified the minimum amount of redundancy that needs to be added to a communication to enable reliable decoding on reception. Since then, the paradigm has been to co-design cleverly restricted classes of mathematically precise grammars called codes with code-specific correction algorithms called decoders.

In this talk, we introduce Guessing Random Additive Noise Decoding (GRAND), class of error correction decoders based on a readily understood paradigm that makes them suitable for use with any moderate redundancy code of any length. Even though the first mathematical analysis was only published in 2018, GRAND has already resulted in taped-out chips that demonstrate its class-leading efficiency in silicon. In this talk, we explain the theoretical insight behind GRAND as well as recent developments that demonstrate its ability to decode long low-rate codes more accurately and efficiently than those in widely used standards.

The work is based on a collaboration with Muriel Medard (MIT), with the circuits elements performed in collaboration with Rabia Yazicigil (BU), as well as their groups.

Despite the potential of Machine learning (ML) to enhance scientific discovery
and engineering innovation, applications of ML in physical problems often
grapple with a critical challenge: predictions frequently lack transparency and
interpretability, ultimately compromising generalizability and hindering the
diagnosis of limitations. This work presents approaches that use ML to learn
from data while increasing the interpretability of models, leading to more
generalizable, reliable, and safe physical models that improve accuracy and/or
computational efficiency over traditional methods.

Welcome. Make Yourself At Home.

A Gathering brings together the newest works of art to enter UMMA’s collection — many on display here for the first time.

As a free, public museum, UMMA staff takes care of art for the benefit of the community and society at large. The works on view in this exhibition, all brought into the Museum between 2019 and the present, shows how institutions like UMMA are becoming more permeable to societal challenges, and more nimble in responding to them in service to all in their communities. In this exhibition you will find works that reflect on how global migrations, race, gender, and ecological change shape the way we engage with the world and inform our visions for the future.

This collection of artistic engagements with issues give us tools to envision who we want to be as individuals, as a museum, and as a society, connected to one another across space and experience.

So gather here to take in these latest works of art brought here for you. Gather here to be engulfed in their forms and meanings, to discuss their takes, to learn, to disagree. Gather to relax, make a friend, drink a coffee, finish the daily Wordle. Gather to feel full, to be moved and inspired by all the possible imaginations of what is yet to come.

In Andrea Carlson Future Cache, a 40-foot-tall memorial wall towers over visitors, commemorating the Cheboiganing (Burt Lake) Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians who were violently burned from their land in Northern Michigan on October 15, 1900. Written across the walls above and around the memorial, a statement proclaims Anishinaabe rights to the land we stand on: “You are on Anishinaabe Land.”

Presented alongside are paintings of imagined decolonized landscapes and a symbolic cache of provisions. Future Cache implicitly asks those who have benefited from the legacies of colonization to consider where they stand and where to go from here and seeks to foster a sense of belonging for displaced Indigenous peoples fighting for restitution.

Special thanks to the Cheboiganing (Burt Lake) Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, Margaret Noodin, and Richard A. Wiles, for their consultation on the State Historical Marker text; to Margaret Noodin and Michael Zimmerman, Jr. for translating the gallery texts into Anishinaabemowin; to James Horton and Fritz Swanson for generously producing the letterpress broadsides; to colleagues at the U-M Biological Station, U-M Museum of Anthropological Archaeology, U-M Clements Library, and U-M Clark Map Library. Care in Uncertain Times

As crises of public health, economic instability, authoritarian regimes, racial injustice, and climate change spread around the globe, millions are experiencing distress, conflict, uncertainty, and vulnerability. This troubling combination of experiences is nothing new for Cambodians. Between 1975-1979, when the Khmer Rouge ruled Cambodia, about a quarter of the country’s populations died of infectious diseases, weapon wounds, and malnutrition.

This exhibition brings together more than 80 works of art spanning a millennium to present how the visual culture of Cambodia and its diaspora has evolved in the face of cultural upheaval. Showcasing works from worldwide collections, including those from some of the foremost members of the Cambodian contemporary art scene, Angkor Complex allows viewers to encounter the still-fresh scars of a genocide and critically appreciate the strategies evolved to nurture resilience in trying times.

In Curriculum / Collection, an incredible variety of University of Michigan courses take material form. Collected for each course are objects that address the nature of materiality, time, and human interaction in relation to our environments, our wars, our relationships, and our eccentricities.

Working in collaboration with University faculty, the works in this exhibition were selected for their capacity to provoke engagement with the guiding questions and themes of their specific courses, while also offering students inspiration for research and art projects in their areas of study. The exhibition demonstrates some of the diverse and creative ways art plays a central role in learning across the disciplines. It also asks us to consider what we can learn from art objects across an infinite variety of specialties and subject matter.

As classes begin in Fall of 2021, you’ll be able to use these pages to explore the collections designed for each course, dive into the works themselves, and hear from the professors and students about how they are engaging with art and objects in new ways. Who knows, maybe you’ll learn something surprising along the way, too.

Lead support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost, Erica Gervais Pappendick and Ted Pappendick, and the Eleanor Noyes Crumpacker Endowment Fund, and the Oakriver Foundation.

Positive Links:
The Positive Links Speaker Series, presented by Michigan Ross’ Center for Positive Organizations, offers inspiring and practical science-based strategies to build and bolster thriving organizations. Attendees learn from leading positive organizational scholars and connect with our community of academics, students, staff, and leaders.

About the talk:
Most scholars in the realm of positive organizations share a common passion: we all aspire to alleviate some of the suffering in the world. Consequently, we are actively engaged in studying positive phenomena such as trust, compassion, high-quality connections, flourishing, and more. Despite this, many of us shy away from addressing a crucial underlying question: positive for whom and on what grounds? There is also contemplation on whether “positive” is indeed the most fitting label, as opposed to “good” or “for the common good.” Often, we adhere to the value-free label of social science, neither acknowledging the underlying value-driven nature of our work nor recognizing that by frequently choosing performance as the dependent variable, we implicitly align with instrumentalism and utilitarian thinking.

In the upcoming discussion, Antoinette will share her story and explain why she chose to directly confront the value question in her new project, “good organizations.” By adopting a distinctly virtue ethics approach, she emphasizes the need to qualify the term “positive,” to differentiate between flourishing and thriving, and to recognize that trust can be ethical only in conjunction with practical wisdom. Antoinette will elaborate on how good organizations view prosperity as a means to the end of collective development and good work, aiming to enable the good life of all stakeholders touched by the organization. Lastly, she will elucidate why she believes that we, as engaged scholars and managers alike, cannot exempt ourselves from contemplating values and ethics. According to Antoinette, coming to explicit terms with our normative foundation is the only genuine way to alleviate the suffering within organizations.

Student Watch Party: Watch this streamed session together with other students for an in-person community experience followed by a structured discussion about how to put insights from Positive Links into practice. Registration for the Student Watch Party is included as an option when registering for this session of Positive Links.

Unsettling Histories: Legacies of Slavery and Colonialism (March 19, 2024 11:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/84303 84303-21621237@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, March 19, 2024 11:00am

Organized as a response to the Museum’s recent acquisition of Titus Kaphar’s Flay (James Madison), this upcoming reinstallation of one of our most prominent gallery spaces forces us to grapple with our collection of European and American art, 1650-1850.

In recent times, growing public awareness of the continued reverberations of the legacy of slavery and colonization has challenged museums to examine the uncomfortable histories contained in our collections, and challenged the public to probe the choices we make about those stories. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don’t say about them.

Pieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.

In this online exhibition, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum’s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices. In the Museum gallery, which will open in early 2021, you’ll be able to experience the changes we’re making to the physical space to highlight a more honest version of European and American history.

By challenging our own practice, and continuing to add to what we know and what we write about the works we display, UMMA tells a more complex and more complete story of this nation - one that unsettles, and fails to settle for, simple narratives.

“Invisible things are not necessarily ‘not there’.... Certain absences are so stressed, so ornate, so planned, they call attention to themselves; arrest us with intentionality and purpose, like neighborhoods that are defined by the population held away from them.”

— Toni Morrison

We Write To You About Africa (March 19, 2024 11:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/84304 84304-21622094@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, March 19, 2024 11:00am

Following years of research into the Museum’s and University of Michigan’s relationships with Africa and African art collections, We Write To You About Africa is a complete reinstallation and doubling of the Museum’s space dedicated to African art.

Featuring a wide range of artworks—from historic Yoruba and Kongo figures to contemporary works by African and African American artists, such as Sam Nhlengenthwa, Masimba Hwati, Jon Onye Lockard and Shani Peters—the exhibition directly addresses the complex and difficult histories inherent to African art collections in the Global North, including their entanglements with colonization and global efforts to repatriate African artworks to the continent.

Art collections, by their very nature, can not be anything other than subjective. With I Write To You About Africa, we examine the subjective ways UMMA and the University of Michigan as a whole have collected and presented art from and connected to the African diaspora.

Drawn from art collections across the U-M campus, a special section of the exhibition highlights how the founding of the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies (DAAS) and the African Studies Center (ASC) impacted U–M’s collecting practices. This section includes an exciting and ongoing project—contemporary African artists, scholars, and curators will be asked to write about their work on postcards, in their first language, and mail them to UMMA where they will be displayed alongside their works.

We Write To You About Africa will be a reinstallation of the Museum’s Robert and Lillian Montalto Bohlen Gallery of African art and the connected Alfred A Taubman Gallery II. It is slated to open in 2021 and will be on view indefinitely.

Lead support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost, the Michigan Arts and Culture Council, and the African Studies Center.

Anti-Racist Community Engagement is an advanced interactive workshop for participants who are already familiar with both community engagement and anti-racism. We recommend the Ginsberg Center's Foundations of Community Engagement workshop as a prerequisite. Participants will develop a deeper understanding of white supremacy in higher education community engagement, discuss various anti-racist practices to resist white supremacy in community engagement work, and talk about how to apply these practices to participants’ own projects.

This workshop is designed for U-M master's students, doctoral students, and postdoctoral scholars on all three campuses; therefore, only U-M graduate students and postdoctoral scholars are permitted to register for this workshop. While this workshop is being facilitated on behalf of Rackham’s DEI Certificate Program, it is open to all U-M graduate students and postdoctoral scholars. For faculty and staff, please contact rackhampdeworkshops@umich.edu to ask if we can accommodate your attendance.

EEB Tuesday Seminar Series - Exploring the Impact of CNVs and Retrocopies in Canines (March 19, 2024 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/120140 120140-21844117@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, March 19, 2024 12:00pm
Location: Biological Sciences Building
Organized By: Ecology and Evolutionary Biology

This is a part of our ongoing Tuesday Seminar Series.

Preview: Canines have proven time and time again to be an extremely useful modern organism, due to high inbreeding within their breed structure, heavy artificial selection, and reflection of human disease phenotypes. However, research on canine assemblies and structural variations have lagged behind human, mouse, or rat research due to a lack of genomic resources, and an important part of these are duplication. Large genomic duplications have gone relatively uninvestigated in modern canine research, largely due to the difficulties in assembling and assessing them properly as a result of their size and conflicting nature. In this investigation, with the recent explosion and availability of canine genomic researchers, we searched for structural variations, copy number variations, and retrocopies, which are all subcategories of genomic duplications. By comparing unique retrocopies across the nine canines we have available, and calculating the number of generations since genome divergence, we were able to determine a rate of novel retrocopy insertion at an average of 1/693 births. Together, our investigation illustrates both the difficulties of finding duplications and retrocopies, and highlights the variable representation of duplications across canines.

DSI Lecture Series | The Right to Speed-Watch (or, when Netflix Discovered its Blind Subscribers) (March 19, 2024 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/116008 116008-21836061@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, March 19, 2024 3:00pm

Speed-watching, an understudied-yet-ubiquitous spectatorial mode, is often described by users as a productivity tool that can help them become digital “super-users.” This talk situates this emerging mode of spectatorship within longer histories of media consumption, connecting it to both efficiency and disability activism. Using Netflix as a case study, I focus on the recent public debate surrounding its failed attempt to add a playback speed feature to its streaming platform. World-renowned filmmakers pushed Netflix to shelve this idea when it was first introduced in 2018, claiming their films were not intended to be watched twice as fast. Yet, citing “requests from deaf and blind subscribers,” Netflix decided to add this feature to its interface in August 2020, when millions were sheltering-in-place due to the pandemic. This presentation asks what led to this decision, and what can the marketing discourse surrounding it teach us about how corporations monetize “accessibility.” Theorizing the difference between "time-shifting" and "time-hacking", I argue that speed-watching is a mode of survival enabling different users to advance a wide range of goals: media literacy, the thrill of speed, and avoiding a mortifying fear of boredom.

Student AIM Seminar: Non-parametric estimates for graphon mean-field particle systems (March 19, 2024 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/120266 120266-21844488@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, March 19, 2024 3:00pm

Abstract: We consider the graphon mean-field system introduced in the work of Bayraktar, Chakraborty, and Wu. It is the large-population limit of a heterogeneously interacting diffusive particle system, where the interaction is of mean-field type with weights characterized by an underlying graphon function. Through observation of continuous-time trajectories within the particle system, we construct plug-in estimators of the particle density, the drift coefficient, and thus the graphon interaction weights of the mean-field system. Our estimators for the density and drift are direct results of kernel interpolation on the empirical data, and a deconvolution method leads to an estimator of the underlying graphon function. We show that, as the number of particles increases, the graphon estimator converges to the true graphon function pointwisely, and as a consequence, in the cut metric. Besides, we conduct a minimax analysis within a particular class of particle systems to justify the pointwise optimality of the density and drift estimators.

Join Larry Silver (University of Pennsylvania) and Deirdre Hennebury (Michigan Museum Studies) as they discuss Too Jewish or Not Jewish Enough: Ritual Objects and Avant-Garde Art at the Jewish Museum of New York with author Jeffrey Abt (Frankel Institute). An exploration of the museum’s origins and early history, this book focuses on the period when it evolved from displaying Jewish ritual objects, to Jewish art, to avant-garde art devoid of Jewish content, created by non-Jews. Established within a rabbinic seminary, the museum’s story reflects changes in Jewish society over the twentieth century as it struggled to balance competing values of religion and secularism, particularism and universalism, and ethnic pride and assimilation.

Jeffrey Abt is a Professor Emeritus at Wayne State University. He earned BFA and MFA degrees in painting at Drake University, working primarily with Jules Kirschenbaum; and he subsequently studied at the Jerusalem campus of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. Prior to Wayne State, he worked at the Wichita Art Museum; the Special Collections Research Center, University of Chicago; and Chicago’s Smart Museum of Art. An artist and writer, he has exhibited widely in the United States and abroad; and his artwork is in several museum and corporate collections. His books include American Egyptologist: The Life of James Henry Breasted and the Creation of His Oriental Institute (University of Chicago Press), Valuing Detroit's Art Museum: A History of Fiscal Abandonment and Rescue (Palgrave Macmillan), and Too Jewish or Not Jewish Enough: Ritual Objects and Avant-Garde Art at the Jewish Museum of New York (Berghahn).

Did Trump and his MAGAites inflict damage on American political institutions via election denialism and the assault on the U.S. Capitol? While most pundits and many scholars find this a question easy to answer in the affirmative, to date, little rigorous evidence has been adduced on Trump’s institutional consequences. Based on surveys of representative samples of the American people in July 2020, December 2020, March 2021, and June 2021, my analysis examines in great detail whether American political institutions lost legitimacy over the period from before the presidential election to well after it and whether any such loss is associated with acceptance of the “Big Lie” about the election and its aftermath. With one exception, my highly contrarian conclusion is simple: try as they might (and did), Trump and his Republicans did not, in fact, succeed in undermining American national political institutions. The empirical evidence indicates that institutions seem to be more resilient than many have imagined, just as the Legitimacy Theory would predict. The exception, however, is of utmost importance for American politics: Among African Americans, support for democratic institutions and values waned considerably, largely as a consequence of factors such as the insurrection and experience, vicarious and personal, with unfair treatment by legal authorities.

CM-AMO Seminar | Developing a Formalism for the Beta Decay of Helium-6 (March 19, 2024 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/119053 119053-21842092@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, March 19, 2024 4:00pm
Location: West Hall

Investigating the beta decay of helium-6 has yielded significant physical insights. It helped clarify the V-A character of the weak interaction [1] and continues to be pivotal in probing for physics beyond the Standard Model by examining potential deviations [2]. During the beta decay of helium-6, the emitted beta particle corresponds to an expanding spherical shell of charge or Coulomb pulse that can eject one or both electrons. This shake-off must be accounted for in balancing energy and momentum to determine the critical electron antineutrino angular correlations. The principal challenge lies in separating the overlapping single and double ionization channels. Calculations have consistently overestimated double ionization compared with observations [3]. Our new theoretical method addresses this by partitioning the overlapping states into distinct charge states using projection operators [4]. This results in closer alignment with experiment; however, discrepancies persist. I will outline our continuing efforts to refine this approach, highlighting the use of delta function matrix elements to assess the fidelity of the daughter ion's charge state.

The one-electron pseudostates used to form the aforementioned projection operators are interesting in their own right. These pseudospectra are useful in several atomic physics problems requiring a complete set of states, especially those with important contributions from very-high-energy intermediate states. An example of this is the Bethe logarithm component of the Lamb shift, a leading order QED correction [5]. Our current activities on this problem will also be discussed.

Furthermore, I will touch on recent work concerning the theory of radiative transitions, where the usual gauge equivalence of the length and velocity forms applies only in the limit of infinite nuclear mass. We have extended this to the case of finite nuclear mass [6], developing a formalism which imposes strict constraints on calculations of atomic properties involving n-photon transitions, such as absorption and spontaneous decay.

Sumner Myers Colloqium: Parabolic Towers and the Asymptotic Geometry of the Mandelbrot set (March 19, 2024 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/120208 120208-21844223@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, March 19, 2024 4:00pm

Understanding the geometry of the Mandelbrot set has been a central pillar of holomorphic dynamics over the past four decades. Much of its structure is now understood, but a critical question remains unresolved: is the Mandelbrot set locally connected? The first major breakthrough towards this conjecture was achieved by Yoccoz in the nineties, who proved that the Mandelbrot set is locally connected at all parameters which are not infinitely quadratic-like renormalizable. A key ingredient in Yoccoz’s work is the PLY-inequality, which bounds the diameter of certain subsets, called limbs, of the Mandelbrot set. These limbs are naturally labeled by the rational numbers, and the PLY-inequality asserts that the p/q-limb of the Mandelbrot set has size O(1/q). Milnor conjectured that O(1/q2) is the correct scale. For any N ≥ 1, the main result of this thesis is to verify Milnor’s conjecture for all p/q-limbs where a finite continued fraction of p/q has uniformly bounded length. Our strategy relies on careful analysis of the bifurcation of parabolic fixed points; we also further develop some of the classical theory in this area. We introduce parabolic and near-parabolic renormalization operators for maps which have parabolic fixed points of arbitrary multiplier and there perturbations, constructing invariant classes for these operators. We provide an alternative definition to the parabolic towers introduced by Epstein and construct a dynamically natural topology on the space of all parabolic towers. We also study the dynamics of Lavaurs maps, constructing analogues of polynomial external rays for these functions showing that these rays arise as the Hausdorff limits of polynomial external rays.

28th Annual Exhibition of Artists in Michigan Prisons (March 19, 2024 5:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/115481 115481-21834895@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, March 19, 2024 5:00pm
Location: Duderstadt Center
Organized By: Prison Creative Arts Project, The

The *28th Annual Exhibition of Artists in Michigan Prisons* (March 19 - April 2, 2024) showcases the hard work and talents of artists incarcerated in Michigan prisons.

The work is by men and women from all 25 state prisons in both the upper and the lower peninsulas: 24 men’s prisons and 1 women’s prison.

This year there are hundreds of works in two and three dimensions, including portraits, tattoo imagery, landscapes, fantasy, and wildlife as well as images about incarceration and visions that are entirely new.

The artwork you see at the exhibit is a testament to the resilience of artists and the life-giving power of art under the most difficult of circumstances–incarceration, isolation, and unimaginable loss. It is an important reminder of the connections that sustain us all, in the free world and behind the walls.

We invite you to enjoy the work and, if you like, make a purchase. All proceeds, minus necessary taxes and fees, go directly to the artists.

The exhibition opens March 19th:
5:00 PM Gallery/sales open
5:30 PM Reception & light refreshments
6:30 PM Celebration program begins
*Free accessible shuttle service available on opening night*
*4:30 - 8:30 PM, running every half-hour*
*Loops to the exhibit from the Plymouth Rd. Park & Ride (3700 Plymouth Rd., right off of US-23)*

March 20th to April 1st, gallery hours for the exhibit are:
Sunday–Monday: 12:00 PM–6:00 PM
Tuesday–Saturday: 10:00 AM–7:00 PM

April 2nd gallery is open until 5:00 PM. Art Pick-Up begins at 5:00 PM

In this talk, we will learn about Wave Kinetic Theory through the lens of the Cubic Nonlinear Schrodinger Equation. We will begin with an overview of the Wave Kinetic Equation and then talk about how one could prove that it holds. One of the major aspects of proofs used to establish Kinetic Theory is that the problem can be reduced to a counting problem of certain types of mathematical trees/molecules. We focus on the main steps of this reduction and the challenges we may encounter in the counting problem.

Foundations of Community Engagement is an interactive workshop for students that introduces principles and practices of equitable, ethical community engagement. Participants will develop a deeper understanding of what the term “community engagement” means, as well as the many forms it might take - from research and course-based projects to philanthropy, activism, policy, and direct service. Across all these forms of engagement, participants will learn concepts and actions that promote equitable partnerships, center community-defined priorities, and disrupt entrenched power dynamics between universities and community members. Participants will also discuss real-world community engagement scenarios that ask them to apply what they’ve learned in the workshop to various situations.

**New for 2023-24, this workshop is an updated version of Ginsberg’s long-standing Entering, Engaging, and Exiting (E3) session. If you’ve attended that session in the past, you’ll gain additional knowledge from this session.**

First-Year Relationship and Sexuality Talk (FYRST) is a required, in-person, and peer-facilitated workshop that came directly from feedback and listening sessions with current University of Michigan students. Our goal is to create an accessible, supportive space for student-driven conversations where all identities and experiences are welcomed and in which students can build skills and tools around identifying goals and values and then communicate effectively about those. Workshops will be offered at multiple locations and times throughout the winter semester, so please sign up for the workshop that works for you!!
First-Year Relationship Sexuality Talk (FYRST) FAQ:
“How many workshops do I have to sign up for?”
You only need to sign up for 1 workshop. Attending 1 workshop will fulfill the requirement for the training.
“I see that there is more than one session, does it matter which one I sign up for?”
It generally does not matter which workshop you sign up for. There will be a few that are designated for specific groups such as transfer students or for students looking for accommodations. If you do not fit these groups please try to save these workshops for those that do and you are free to choose among any of the other workshops.
“Is this workshop required?”
This workshop is required for all transfer and first-year students at the University of Michigan.
“I’ve experienced harm around relationships or sexual experiences in the past and I am worried that attending this workshop may be harmful for me.”
Our team is aware that students who are coming into the university that have experienced harm in the past. Our workshop is specifically designed to respect and validate the experiences of survivors and has been carefully constructed to avoid any specific descriptions of violence and focus instead on themes of empowerment, communication, and boundary setting. However, if you still have concerns about programming and would like to request alternative programming, please feel free to reach out at SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu.
“What if I struggle to learn in a presentation setting? I’m an active learner.”
Our workshop is built to meet a variety of learning styles, including time for self-reflection, small group sharing, and resources to take with you to work through on your own time! This workshop is meant to be interactive and inclusive.
“Can I request accommodations?”
We considered accessibility in creating this workshop and selecting the locations in which the workshops are help. However, we recognize many places at the University are inaccessible and we've set an * next to workshops that are on the first floor and lack stairs. These workshops also will have a presentation (other workshops we do not) and are a good fit for those who might need a large font. Please sign up for those if you feel that accommodations would assist you and reach out to SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu if you are concerned or have questions.
“I missed my workshop, what should I do ?”
Our team tracks attendance at each workshop by having participants swipe in with their MCard. If you are not able to attend the workshop you signed up for, our team will continue to send reminder emails until you have completed a workshop. In this case, please sign up for another workshop as soon as you can as the workshop is required and may fill up especially near the end of the semester. No need to contact SAPAC unless you are not able to reschedule.
“I have had gender-based violence training before, can I get this requirement waived?”
As this workshop was designed with University of Michigan student feedback in mind, our workshop is unique to the UM community. Our curriculum focuses on individualized reflection and because of its interactive nature, each workshop will be unique to the people attending. Although we are excited you already have familiarity with the subject, this workshop is required for every first year and transfer student.
“I’m a commuter/non-traditional student, do I still have to attend?"
Yes, this workshop is required for every first-year and transfer student - not only do we want every student to benefit from having this time to connect with peers, but we also want to make sure your peers benefit from what you bring to our community. If you have any concerns or questions about being able to participate, please contact SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu.
“I still have questions! Who should I contact?"
Please contact us at SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu.

WE START WITH THE THINGS WE FIND: a LOT-EK film screening and talk-back event with director Thomas Piper and designers Ada Tolla and Giuseppe Lignano.

Look at things differently. LOT-EK’s inspirational art and architectural work reconsiders our modern economy through the icon of globalization, the shipping container.

If we pay enough attention to the ordinary, we see the extraordinary. The shipping container is an accidental icon of our modern age: the eight-foot-by-forty-foot corrugated steel box that brings the world to our doorstep. It brings all our hearts’ desires’, available for purchase. And it brings us complicity in the global supply chains, and all the economic, ecological, technological, and political systems that forge those chains, as those great container ships link maker and user, buyer and seller, China and America together across the vast distances of the lawless sea. The design studio LOT-EK is a visionary practice at the intersection of art and architecture, that specializes in upcycling, which is the art and science of repurposing, remaking, rethinking, reimagining. Of using old things in new ways. The shipping container is the thing that has captured their imagination for over a quarter-century: they have remade containers into homes, schools, galleries, libraries, and more. With hundreds of millions of obsolete and unused containers around the world, this is a new and necessary architecture of the future, that repairs and regenerates the unnatural environment that we have inherited from the past.

WE START WITH THE THINGS WE FIND is a feature-length documentary of this vision, and of the soulful lifelong partnership of the people, designers Ada Tolla and Giuseppe Lignano, behind it. WE START WITH THE THINGS WE FIND shows us a way to be radically optimistic, creative, and construc-tive during times that can feel the opposite of all that. Director Thomas Piper’s acclaimed documentary feature Five Seasons: The Gardens of Piet Oudolf showed how wild and unfavored plants could encourage audiences to live more responsibly with nature, and now he looks at living more smartly and sweetly with the effects of industry, infrastructure, and technology. Taking us from spark-filled workshops to a container ship sea voyage over a shimmering sea; and explaining all the prosaic and poetic design thinking behind how LOT-EK brings the container to life, the film shows how all we have can become all we need, how resourceful subsistence can feel like beautiful abundance, and how to keep going when we now know there is no such thing as a fresh start. The film is a humanist essay not only about a new kind of design thinking, but about a new design for life.

Sweetland's Writer to Writer series lets you hear directly from University of Michigan professors about their challenges, processes, and expectations as writers and also as readers of student writing. Each semester, Writer to Writer pairs one esteemed University professor with a Sweetland faculty member for a conversation about writing.

These conversations offer students a rare glimpse into the writing that professors do outside the classroom. You can hear instructors from various disciplines describe how they handle the same challenges student writers face, from finding a thesis to managing deadlines. Professors will also discuss what they want from student writers in their courses, and will take questions put forth by students and by other members of the University community. If there's anything you've ever wanted to ask a professor about writing, Writer to Writer gives you the chance.

This month Writer to Writer presents a conversation with Petra Kuppers via Zoom.

Petra Kuppers (she/her) is a community performance artist and a disability culture activist. She uses social somatics, performance, and speculative writing to engage audiences toward more socially just and enjoyable futures. Petra is the Anita Gonzalez Collegiate Professor of Performance Studies and Disability Culture at the University of Michigan.

Her artistry is grounded in the twin experiences of pain and joy. She has lived with chronic pain all her life, but her love of movement expresses itself in multiple ways: pushing against established definitions of what dance can be, and realigning connections between movement and writing. Her experimentation in creative somatics have allowed her to create community projects of embodied dreaming.

Her third performance poetry collection, Gut Botany (Wayne State University Press, 2020), won the 2022 Creative Book Award by the Association for the Study of Literature and the Environment. Her fourth collection, Diver Beneath the Street – true crime meets ecopoetry at the level of the soil – appears with Wayne State University Press in February 2024. Kuppers also writes academic books. Her latest, Eco Soma: Joy and Pain in Speculative Performance Encounters (University of Minnesota Press, 2022, open access), has received honorable mentions by the National Dance Educators' Organization’s Ruth Murray Book Award, the British Theatre and Performance Research Association’s’ David Bradby Monograph Award, and was shortlisted for the de la Torre Bueno Prize by the Dance Studies Association.

Petra was a 2022/2023 Dance/USA Fellow and is a 2023/24 Guggenheim Fellow.

She is Artistic Director of The Olimpias, an international disability culture collective, and co-creates Turtle Disco, a somatic writing studio, with her wife, poet and dancer Stephanie Heit.

"One of modern blues’ greatest performers.” –Vintage Guitar

According to Atlanta-based blues guitarist, singer and songwriter Tinsley Ellis, his new, first-ever solo acoustic album, “Naked Truth,” is both “a departure and an arrival.” Tinsley has been recording and traveling the world for over four decades, delivering his feral, guitar-fueled, original electric blues-rock to ever-growing audiences at concert halls, festivals, and clubs. Naked Truth is steeped in the folk blues traditions of Muddy Waters, Skip James, Son House, Robert Johnson and even Leo Kottke. Stripped of the electric fervor that defined his previous works, Ellis’ acoustic music carries a rawness that speaks directly from his soul. The songs unveil another side of Tinsley Ellis, but one that is totally recognizable to his fans. His gruff, full-throated vocals intertwine seamlessly with the bare, acoustic arrangements, creating an album that is both timeless and immediate. No Depression says, “Ellis shines. When the tempo slows, the intensity doesn’t waver.” Blues Music Magazine states, “Tinsley Ellis is a powerful and commanding presence. His music is impossible not to enjoy.”
