DESCRIPTION:Are you interested in a career in the field of law? Do you want to learn about a typical day in the life of a judge? LSA Alum Judge Kristina Robinson Garrett  joins us to share her story - from graduating Psychology (‘2007) and earning her J.D.\, to serving as General Counsel to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office to currently being the only Black woman sitting on the Michigan Court of Appeals.  If you’re interested in a career in law\, or if you’re still exploring career options\, Judge Garrett will share advice on the importance of being prepared\, staying true to who you are\, and making genuine connections.\n\n\nAbout Judge Kristina Robinson Garrett\n\nJudge Kristina Robinson Garrett was appointed to the Michigan Court of Appeals in February 2022 and elected to a full term in November 2022. \n\nPrior to Judge Garrett’s appointment to the Court of Appeals\, she served as a Judge of the 36th District Court in Detroit\, where she presided over traffic and misdemeanor criminal cases\, as well as a variety of specialty courts aimed at helping veterans\, the homeless\, and individuals struggling with mental health and substance abuse issues. Prior to her appointment to the 36th District Court\, she served as General Counsel to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office\, where she advised the office on a myriad of legal matters and helped protect the rights of employees\, inmates\, and the public. \n\nJudge Garrett is deeply committed to public service and access to justice. Most recently\, she served on the Commission on Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion in the Michigan Judiciary\, and is an active member of the Michigan Judges Association\, Association of Black Judges of Michigan\, Women Lawyers Association of Michigan (Wayne Region)\, Black Women Lawyers Association of Michigan\, D. Augustus Straker Bar Association\, Wolverine Bar Association\, Detroit Bar Association\, State Bar of Michigan (Representative Assembly & Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Committee)\, National Association of Women Judges\, National Bar Association\, and American Bar Association. In addition\, she is an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority\, Inc. (Detroit Alumnae Chapter)\, and she serves on the Board of Directors of Forgotten Harvest (an organization dedicated to relieving hunger and preventing nutritious food waste). Judge Garrett formerly served as the Michigan District Judges Association appointed commissioner on the Michigan Indigent Defense Commission\, a member of the Judicial Education Board\, and is a graduate of the Detroit Regional Chamber Leadership Detroit Class XL. \n\nShe is a proud graduate of the University of Michigan and the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law\, where she served as Vice-President of the Association of Black Law Alumni and chaired the Mentoring Committee. Judge Garrett\, her husband\, Judge Austin W.
