Register for the Zoom webinar at: https://myumi.ch/4xmz3\n \nThis talk offers a preview of Ganti’s forthcoming book\, *Thinking in English\, Speaking in Hindi* (Duke 2027)\, centered on Bollywood and the dubbing industry based in Mumbai. Ganti illustrates the essential role played by translation in the political economy of media industries through an examination of screenwriting and dubbing practices in Mumbai. Investigating the translation practices\, linguistic ideologies\, and regimes of value structuring mainstream media production\, she argues that translation is not merely a linguistic bridge but a constitutive and material force in media production. Foregrounding the symbiotic relationship between Hindi and English within Mumbai’s media industries\, Ganti demonstrates that translation operates beyond notions of linguistic purity or inherent hierarchy and is a dynamic and multimodal process of creating social\, aesthetic\, and economic value.\n\nTejaswini Ganti is professor of anthropology and core faculty in the Program in Culture & Media at New York University. A media anthropologist specializing in South Asia\, her research and teaching interests include Indian cinema\, media industries\, production cultures\, translation studies\, visual culture\, cultural policy\, elites\, political economy\, and theories of development and globalization. She has been conducting research about the social world and filmmaking practices of the Hindi film industry since 1996 and is the author of *Producing Bollywood: Inside the Contemporary Hindi Film Industry* (Duke 2012) *Bollywood: A Guidebook to Popular Hindi Cinema* (Routledge 2004\; 2nd ed. 2013\; 3rd ed. 2027) and *Thinking in English\, Speaking in Hindi: Translation\, Creativity\, and Value in Bollywood and Beyond* (Duke 2027).\n\nIf there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you\, please contact us.
