Mirza.  \n\n\nDr. Mirza will be discussing his latest book *The Islamic Mary: Maryam Through the Centuries *(Fortress Press\, 2025)\, which examines the appearances of Mary\, mother of Jesus (Isa) in various Islamic theological and cultural contexts. Mary has been historically revered throughout the Islamic and Christian traditions. In the Qur’an\, she is known by the name “Maryam.” The Islamic Mary discusses Maryam's extended history\, from her scriptural mentions in the Qur’an and the traditional biographies (Sīrah) of the Prophet Muhammad\, to her appearances in medieval debates on prophecy\, to citations of her model virtue in Sufi discussions of piety\, to her representations in art and film\, to her role in modern interfaith relations\, particularly between Muslims and Christians.\n\nDr. Mirza will be introduced by Abderrahim Er-ragragi\, Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of Middle East Studies and Co-organizer\, Rackham Interdisciplinary Islamic Studies Seminar (IISS).\n\nThis event is brought to you by the U-M Global Islamic Studies Center and co-sponsored by the Department of American Culture\, the Arab and Muslim American Studies Program in American Culture\, and the Islamophobia Working Group.\n\n\nThe talk is part of GISC’s ongoing “Qahwah & Authors” series\, which launches new books and writers in the fields of Muslim and Islamic Studies. Mirza is the Founding Director of the Barzinji Institute for Global Virtual Learning at Shenandoah University\, Virginia. He defended his dissertation in Arabic and Islamic Studies from Georgetown University\, where he is currently a visiting researcher. He has also taught at Millsaps and Allegheny Colleges. His research focuses on the relationship between the Bible and the Qur’an and the shared stories between them. He is the author of the new book *The Islamic Mary: Maryam Through the Centuries*\, co-author of the book *The Bible and the Qur’an: Biblical Figures in the Islamic Tradition*\, and has published in journals such as the *Journal of the American Academy of Religion (JAAR)*\, the *Journal of Qur’anic Studies (JQS) *and *Islam Christian-Muslim Relations (ICMR)*. He has been profiled for his teaching by Interfaith America\, and regularly teaches classes on the Qur’an and Bible\, and Marriage and Sexuality in Islam. Dr. Mirza was recently Senior Editor of the *Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Religion*\, and hosts the *A Common Word and The Islamic Mary *podcasts.
