SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Toward a Computational Understanding of Socio-Cultural Dynamics
DESCRIPTION:This symposium brings social scientists and computational scientists together for an afternoon to promote interdisciplinary work on sociocultural dynamics. \n\nThe event features a keynote lecture by Rachael Jack of Vanderbilt University\, along with a series of flash talks by U-M experts to introduce non-computational scientists to methods relevant to the study of complex social and cultural processes. The lineup includes Emily Provost\, David Jurgens\, Mark Newman\, and Alexander Rodríguez. A closing reception offers space for informal conversation and building new collaborations. \n\nDoors/refreshments at 12:30\, with the program starting at 1.\n\nShinobu Kitayama and Amie Gordon\, Director and Associate Director of the Research Center for Group Dynamics (RCGD) are the organizers of this symposium. This event will launch a new initiative of RCGD to explore how computational methods can advance our understanding of culture\, cognition\, and social behavior. RCGD will present a winter seminar series on this topic\, beginning in January.\n\nFor questions related to the event\, or to request accommodations\, please contact Matthew Redding\, mredding@umich.edu.\n\nOct. 30\, 1-4:30\nDoors/refreshments at 12:30\n\nTalk titles and an RSVP form will be available soon.\n\nSpeakers and Talks:\nEmily Provost\, U-M Professor in Computer Science and Engineering\nDavid Jurgens\, U-M Professor\, School of Information and the Department of Computer Science & Engineering\nMark Newman\, U-M Anatol Rapoport Distinguished University Professor of Physics\nAlexander Rodriguez\, Assistant Professor\, Computer Science and Engineering\nRachael Jack\, Professor\, Area Lead of Computational Social Science\, Vanderbilt University
