SUMMARY:Film Screening:\"From Hilde\, with Love\"
DESCRIPTION:This screening is part of Michigan's Theater Anti-Fascist Film Series. \n\nSpanning 1939 to today\, the Anti-Fascist Film Series explores how filmmakers have confronted fascism\, authoritarianism\, and oppression. Through stories of resistance\, rebellion\, and individual courage\, these films examine what it means to stand against forces that threaten freedom.\nFull Schedule: \n\nCONFESSIONS OF A NAZI SPY (1939) – Thursday\, September 10th \n      FBI agent Ed Renard (Edward G. Robinson) goes on the hunt for a Nazi spy ring bent on subverting the citizenry of America. Beginning with Nazi rabble-rouser Kurt Schneider (Francis Lederer)\, Renard uses his well-honed instincts to find his way to the ring leader of the espionage campaign\, Dr. Karl Kassell (Paul Lukas). With the Nazi secret police rounding up any security leaks and passing them back to Germany\, Renard races to extract the information that will bring down the conspiracy.\n\n THE GREAT DICTATOR (1940) – Thursday\, September 17th \n      After dedicated service in the Great War\, a Jewish barber (Charles Chaplin) spends years in an army hospital recovering from his wounds\, unaware of the simultaneous rise of fascist dictator Adenoid Hynkel (also Chaplin) and his anti-Semitic policies. When the barber\, who bears a remarkable resemblance to Hynkel\, returns to his quiet neighborhood\, he is stunned by the brutal changes and recklessly joins a beautiful girl (Paulette Goddard) and her neighbors in rebelling.\n\n THE BATTLE OF ALGIERS (1966) – Thursday\, October 8th \n      Paratrooper commander Colonel Mathieu (Jean Martin)\, a former French Resistance fighter during World War II\, is sent to 1950s Algeria to reinforce efforts to squelch the uprisings of the Algerian War. There he faces Ali la Pointe (Brahim Haggiag)\, a former petty criminal who\, as the leader of the Algerian Front de Libération Nationale\, directs terror strategies against the colonial French government occupation. As each side resorts to ever-increasing brutality\, no violent act is too unthinkable.\n\n TRANSIT (2018) – Thursday\, October 15th \n      In 1942\, Georg attempts to flee France\, after its invasion by the Nazis. He assumes the identity of a dead author\, but soon finds himself stuck in Marseilles\, where he falls in love with Maria\, a young woman searching for her missing husband.\n\n A HIDDEN LIFE (2019) – Thursday\, October 22nd \n      Austrian farmer Franz Jägerstätter faces the threat of execution for refusing to fight for the Nazis during World War II.\n\n FROM HILDE\, WITH LOVE (2024) – Thursday\, October 29th (in partnership with U-M German Dept.)\n      When the shy and pregnant Hilde Coppi is suddenly detained by the Gestapo\, she pleads ignorance to their accusations that she aids her lover\, Hans\, in transcribing coded radio transmissions to and from Moscow.
