SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Vanessa L. Bond: Carrigan Lecture in Music Education
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Music Education presents a guest lecture by Vanessa L. Bond\, Ph.D.\, with support from the Carrigan Lecture Series in Music Education.\n\nABSTRACT\n\n\"Mistakes are welcome here.” “Failure is not fatal.” “Every failure is a step to success.” Platitudes about the importance of failure abound. And yet\, failure is rarely tolerated in our educational and artistic systems. In this discussion\, I will interweave empirical research\, philosophical perspectives\, and personal insights to argue that pedagogical and artistic innovation require space and structures that nurture failure. I will offer concrete possibilities for reimagining specific curricular\, assessment\, and mentoring practices in music education. Ultimately\, if we design intentional opportunities to fail\, we open up greater opportunities to grow. \n\nABOUT THE GUEST SPEAKER\n\nDr. VANESSA L. BOND\, Professor and Coordinator of Graduate Music Education at Rowan University\, researches intersections of music education and the Reggio Emilia approach\, culturally responsive music education\, mentoring\, and academic motherhood. Her recent scholarship appears in the *Journal of Research in Music Education* and the *Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education*. She is also the author of the forthcoming research-to-practice book\, *Inspiring Musical Play in General Music Through Loose Parts*.
