SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture: Ken Ridgway
DESCRIPTION:During the last two decades there has been a focus of integrated research by many geoscientists on the collision and subduction of the Yakutat microplate/oceanic plateau in southern Alaska. These studies build on the pioneering work of USGS geologists George Plafker\, Don Miller\, Don Richter\, and others. In this talk\, I will focus mainly on the sedimentary record of Cenozoic flat slab subduction processes in southern Alaska. We will first discuss the sedimentary strata that were deposited directly on the Yakutat oceanic plateau that forms the lower plate of the convergent boundary. The lower plate strata archive the record of initial collision farther to the south\, strike-slip transport along the Cordilleran margin\, and ongoing subduction of the oceanic plateau beneath Alaska. Large parts of the lower plate strata have been incorporated into the upper plate of the southern Alaska convergent margin along the active collisional zone. We will then discuss the record of flat slab subduction processes on the upper plate of the southern Alaska convergent boundary. Flat slab subduction has had a profound impact on the formation and exhumation of sedimentary basins\, the locations of volcanic arc systems\, and the generation of the highest topography in North America. I will end the talk by briefly discussing ongoing collaborative research projects in the northern Cordillera.
