SUMMARY:Presentation:From scraps of paper: archival microhistories in the BIA files and the necropolitics of translation
DESCRIPTION:The BIA files expose the double-colonial bind of Pueblo nations in the Southwest from the 16th to 19th centuries and clearly illustrates how Spanish set the basis for an American imperialism that uses similar methods\, including translation policies that result in the death and destruction of the newly translated Indians\, racialized to fit an imperial logic of dispossession. While the files focus on Allotment necropolitics\, their breath expands into the late sixteenth century as the source of colonial fantasies to replicate or build on. Critical translation studies and my training as activist allow me to tell the story of silenced peoples and interpreters triangulating oral\, historical\, and archeological archives.
