A Short Introduction to Probability on Finite Groups

There is a surprising relation between structures of Fourier analysis and representation theory of finite groups. This connection can be stretched to extend probability to finite groups.

We will begin with a gentle intro to the finite dimensional representations of finite groups. Then, we will sketch the development of probability theory on finite groups and discuss random walks on finite groups. We will sketch some proofs and will aim to convey a bird's eye view of a small part of these subjects. No background in either representation theory or advanced probability will be assumed. Speaker(s): Berkan Yilmaz (University of Michigan)
