Many roads lead to hyperbolic groups

We will give three equivalent, and equivalently original, definitions of hyperbolic groups and explore motivating examples to see where they came from. We discuss some of the ideas from hyperbolic geometry and dynamics that can be ported over to the world of hyperbolic groups, and also peek down some of the other tangents that Gromov goes off on in his original introduction to Hyperbolic Groups. Speaker(s): Feng Zhu (UM)
