DESCRIPTION:Small Works\nPrints & Book Objects from Detroit 2020–2026\n\nOctober 21 - November 19 \nPublic Reception: Friday\, November 13 from 4:30-6pm.\n\nSmall Works was a print shop ran by Li Chen & Gerald Schulze\, in Detroit\, MI\, from 2020–2026. Mariana Matos joined as the studio assistant\, and later studio manager\, in 2024. Over those six years\, the business grew from an extension of their design practice to a community space that hosts more than 70 classes a year\, open studio for the public\, and year long funded fellowships that investigate practice in art and design related to the Book Arts. In 2026\, they decided to expand community programming\, and to accommodate this expansion closed Small Works\, and formed Center for the Book Arts Detroit (BAD) which operates in the same space.\n\nThis exhibition is a eulogy for the former Small Works shop\, and a celebration of all the people who made work here. It also serves to show what is possible as a community\, when they share space and create work together. \n\nThe work featured is a collection of things printed by Small Works\, by their studiomates Diskette Press\, the publisher Maamoul Press\, and by the community that uses the space.

Seats are offered on a first come\, first served basis\; please arrive early to secure a spot.\n\nTisa Bryant is the author of *Unexplained Presence* (Leon Works\, 2007)\, a collection of hybrid essays on black presences in film\, literature and visual art. She is co-editor of the cross-referenced journal of narrative possibility\, *The Encyclopedia Project\,* and co-editor\, with Ernest Hardy\, of *War Diaries*\, an anthology on black gay men’s desire and survival\, published in 2010 by AIDS Project Los Angeles\, and a finalist for a 2010 LAMBDA literary award. Her essays have appeared in exhibition catalogs for visual artists Laylah Ali\, Jaime Cortez\, Wura-Natasha Ogunji\, Suné Woods and Cauleen Smith\, and is forthcoming in the anthology *Letters to the Future: Black Experimental Women Writers*\, and in a catalogue of site-specific art from The New School. She has done numerous presentations of cinema essays\, most recently at ALOUD's \"School of Prince\" event at the Los Angeles Public Library\, and at \"Speak Nearby\,\" a symposium of text and performance inspired by Trinh T. Minh-ha. Tisa Bryant was a commissioned writer/researcher for Radio Imagination\, Clockshop’s year-long Los Angeles celebration of science fiction writer Octavia Butler\, in collaboration with the Huntington Library in Pasadena\, which houses the Octavia E. Butler Papers. She is working on *The Curator*\, a novel of Black female subjectivity and imagined cinema. *Residual*\, a meditation on grief\, longing\, desire and archival research\, is forthcoming from Nightboat Books.\n\nFor any questions about the event or to share accommodation needs\, please email zvwseries@umich.edu--we are eager to help ensure this event is inclusive to you. Instructor permission is required to register\, and courses are offered through individual academic departments.\n\nWhy choose a GCC program?: \n+​​​​​Unique UM faculty-led programs are a great way to maximize learning during a short-term study abroad experience.+\n+Preparation in the classroom before you go abroad makes it easy to hit the ground running with good cultural context.+\n+GCC programs allow for close-knit relationships between students and faculty.  You get to know your team well throughout the semester leading up to the field component.+\n\nGCC London- Literary Monsters Overview: \nMoving among the people and streets of London and studying the political and cultural power historically centered there\, students will deepen their understanding of the cultural and geographic origins and histories of British literary monsters such as Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and Robert Louis Stevenson’s Mr. Hyde. The layered geography of the city itself\, its neighborhoods and institutions and cemeteries\, will become our classroom as well as an additional kind of course text\, as we unpack the anxieties about foreignness\, status\, and marginalization that tales of monstrosity have documented and critiqued. Building on concepts studied throughout the Winter semester\, students will have rich new opportunities to think about what monstrosity means in this particular material setting and historical moment\, visit London's past imaginatively and in some sense quite literally\, and continue to discover what kind of monster stories they themselves have to tell.

DESCRIPTION:Small Works\nPrints & Book Objects from Detroit 2020–2026\n\nOctober 21 - November 19 \nPublic Reception: Friday\, November 13 from 4:30-6pm.\n\nSmall Works was a print shop ran by Li Chen & Gerald Schulze\, in Detroit\, MI\, from 2020–2026. Mariana Matos joined as the studio assistant\, and later studio manager\, in 2024. Over those six years\, the business grew from an extension of their design practice to a community space that hosts more than 70 classes a year\, open studio for the public\, and year long funded fellowships that investigate practice in art and design related to the Book Arts. A graduate of Stanford University's Symbolic Systems program\, he took creative writing classes with Adam Johnson\, ZZ Packer\, and Elizabeth Tallent. After graduating\, he published a handful of stories\, one of which won an O. Henry Award\, as he worked for a small Bay Area UX firm. He got accepted to the Iowa Writers' Workshop the same week he was laid off in 2010. \n\nAt Iowa he finished most of a draft of his debut novel *Private Citizens*\, which was called \"the first great Millennial novel\" by *New York Magazine* after its publication in 2016\, and received a Whiting Writers' Award. In 2017 he founded CRIT\, an independent class he teaches out of his apartment in Brooklyn\, whose alumni have gone on to publish 34 books to date. He has written for *The Paris Review\, N+1\, The New York Times\, The New Republic\, The Believer\, Playboy\, The Nation\,* and others. \n\nTony's second book is a novel-in-stories\, *Rejection*\, published in 2024. *Rejection* has been translated into seven languages\, and was nominated for the National Book Award\, the Story Prize\, and the Clark Prize\, and received a Jack Galef Literary Arts award. He is the winner of a 2018 Whiting Award in Fiction and a Barnes and Noble Discover Award. His fiction has appeared in *The Paris Review\, The Baffler\, Harper's Magazine\, Granta\, BOMB* and other places. Sorry to Disrupt the Peace has been translated into Turkish\, Italian\, and Korean.\n\nPatrick currently lives in Denver where he is an Assistant Professor in the English and Literary Arts program. Her first novel\, *Godshot*\, was longlisted for The Center For Fiction’s First Novel Prize and named a Barnes & Noble Pick of the Month. Her story collection\, *Heartbroke* won the California Book Award and was a *New York Times* Best Book of the year. They received the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize\, a PEN award\, a Creative Capital grant\, a Pew Fellowship\, and a Lambda Literary Award. *The Book of Frank* is available in 9 different languages\, most recently French and Italian. They also exhibit poems as sculpture with recent shows in London\, Hamburg\, Melbourne\, Porto\, Santander\, and Tucson.
