DESCRIPTION:Jim Cogswell: Hands on Fire\n\n**August 31 to October 9\, 2026**\n**Public Reception: Friday\, September 18\, 4:30 to 6:30 pm**\n\nJim Cogswell’s Hands on Fire is a solo exhibition of mixed media drawings at the Residential College Gallery at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. The exhibition features sixty works on paper completed between 2024 and 2026.\n\nThis body of work responds to Greek Cypriot filmmaker Michael Cacoyannis’ cinematic adaptations of three tragedies by Euripides dealing with the Trojan War and its aftermath: Electra (1962)\, The Trojan Women (1971)\, and Iphigenia (1977). The work is in close conversation with Vinyl Euripides (2022)\, Cogswell’s adhesive vinyl installation on three floors of the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation in Athens\, Greece\, which also responded to the cinematic trilogy. By following Cacoyannis’ adaptations\, Cogswell builds on a cross-cultural history of restaging these tragedies to examine the human suffering caused by war\, imperial overreach\, and abuse of power\; and the dehumanizing consequences of revenge as a course of justice.\n\nWithin each drawing multiple scenes from the three narratives are overlaid within single frames\, suggesting the unseen entanglements that bind these ancient stories into such a persistent vision of our human position.\n\nThe grid of paintings encircling the gallery proposes a linear narrative but delivers instead a sequence that loops and turns on itself\, a stuck frame that stutters until bursting in flames. DESCRIPTION:For one night only: Mark Kirschenmann' \"Return to Sender\" album release concert with the Alex Wand Trio and E3Q.\n\nOct1 7pm East Quad Keene Theater\n\nRC Emeritus Lecturer Mark Kirschenmann performs selections from his new album \"Return to Sender\" for electric trumpet and no input mixer. Released on the Minneapolis-based Neuma Records in September 26\, the label says of the record:\n\nUsually a mixer is judged by how clean it sounds\; the less noise\, the more signal\, the\nbetter. With sneaky patching\, however – with outputs connected back into inputs – it be-\ncomes a different creature entirely: a generator of analog chaos\, volatile and unpredictable.\nAdd a trumpet to the circuit and you are now entering the unstable\, fragile\, and gritty world\nof Mark Kirschenmann.\n\nReturn to Sender takes the idea of feedback to a whole new level. The album captures\nimprovised exchanges between trumpet and No-Input Mixer\, bringing together experimental\njazz\, electronic noise\, and live studio experimentation in a series of one-take unrepeatable\nperformances.\n\nFirst associated with Japanese circuit bender\, Toshimaru Nakamura\, the No-Input Mixer functions as a responsive partner with a mercurial mind of its own. Improvisor Kirschenmann shapes its pulses\, tones\, and feedback into layered textures\, then adds processed trumpet lines that interact with the shifting electronics. DESCRIPTION:Jim Cogswell: Hands on Fire\n\n**August 31 to October 9\, 2026**\n**Public Reception: Friday\, September 18\, 4:30 to 6:30 pm**\n\nJim Cogswell’s Hands on Fire is a solo exhibition of mixed media drawings at the Residential College Gallery at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. The exhibition features sixty works on paper completed between 2024 and 2026.\n\nThis body of work responds to Greek Cypriot filmmaker Michael Cacoyannis’ cinematic adaptations of three tragedies by Euripides dealing with the Trojan War and its aftermath: Electra (1962)\, The Trojan Women (1971)\, and Iphigenia (1977). The work is in close conversation with Vinyl Euripides (2022)\, Cogswell’s adhesive vinyl installation on three floors of the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation in Athens\, Greece\, which also responded to the cinematic trilogy. By following Cacoyannis’ adaptations\, Cogswell builds on a cross-cultural history of restaging these tragedies to examine the human suffering caused by war\, imperial overreach\, and abuse of power\; and the dehumanizing consequences of revenge as a course of justice.\n\nWithin each drawing multiple scenes from the three narratives are overlaid within single frames\, suggesting the unseen entanglements that bind these ancient stories into such a persistent vision of our human position.\n\nThe grid of paintings encircling the gallery proposes a linear narrative but delivers instead a sequence that loops and turns on itself\, a stuck frame that stutters until bursting in flames. The grid also evokes the net that is a central feature of the series--the web of fate and circumstance that governs each of our lives\, that determines who we are and what is possible for us at any given moment in history.\n\nThe drawings are also characterized by a repeated motif of hands as consuming flames. Hands have unlimited expressive and narrative potential. They testify to the centrality of making in the development of human cognition. DESCRIPTION:Join us for this virtual Info Session to learn more about the CGIS: Global Course Connections (GCC) in London\, UK - Literary Monsters study abroad program for Spring 2027! Unable to Join? Register for the Info Session and even if you can't make it\, you'll automatically be sent a recording. \n\nGCC Program Model: ​​​​\nGlobal Course Connections (GCC) programs allow students to participate in a field-based extension of selected U-M courses. Students enroll for specific courses in the fall or winter semester and then travel for 3 weeks with classmates to field sites where they will put into practice what they have learned in their course. Instructor permission is required to register\, and courses are offered through individual academic departments.\n\nWhy choose a GCC program?: \n+​​​​​Unique UM faculty-led programs are a great way to maximize learning during a short-term study abroad experience.+\n+Preparation in the classroom before you go abroad makes it easy to hit the ground running with good cultural context.+\n+GCC programs allow for close-knit relationships between students and faculty.  You get to know your team well throughout the semester leading up to the field component.+\n\nGCC London- Literary Monsters Overview: \nMoving among the people and streets of London and studying the political and cultural power historically centered there\, students will deepen their understanding of the cultural and geographic origins and histories of British literary monsters such as Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and Robert Louis Stevenson’s Mr. Hyde. The layered geography of the city itself\, its neighborhoods and institutions and cemeteries\, will become our classroom as well as an additional kind of course text\, as we unpack the anxieties about foreignness\, status\, and marginalization that tales of monstrosity have documented and critiqued. Building on concepts studied throughout the Winter semester\, students will have rich new opportunities to think about what monstrosity means in this particular material setting and historical moment\, visit London's past imaginatively and in some sense quite literally\, and continue to discover what kind of monster stories they themselves have to tell.

A graduate of Stanford University's Symbolic Systems program\, he took creative writing classes with Adam Johnson\, ZZ Packer\, and Elizabeth Tallent. After graduating\, he published a handful of stories\, one of which won an O. Henry Award\, as he worked for a small Bay Area UX firm. He got accepted to the Iowa Writers' Workshop the same week he was laid off in 2010. \n\nAt Iowa he finished most of a draft of his debut novel *Private Citizens*\, which was called \"the first great Millennial novel\" by *New York Magazine* after its publication in 2016\, and received a Whiting Writers' Award. In 2017 he founded CRIT\, an independent class he teaches out of his apartment in Brooklyn\, whose alumni have gone on to publish 34 books to date. He has written for *The Paris Review\, N+1\, The New York Times\, The New Republic\, The Believer\, Playboy\, The Nation\,* and others. \n\nTony's second book is a novel-in-stories\, *Rejection*\, published in 2024. *Rejection* has been translated into seven languages\, and was nominated for the National Book Award\, the Story Prize\, and the Clark Prize\, and received a Jack Galef Literary Arts award. He is the winner of a 2018 Whiting Award in Fiction and a Barnes and Noble Discover Award. His fiction has appeared in *The Paris Review\, The Baffler\, Harper's Magazine\, Granta\, BOMB* and other places. Sorry to Disrupt the Peace has been translated into Turkish\, Italian\, and Korean.\n\nPatrick currently lives in Denver where he is an Assistant Professor in the English and Literary Arts program. They also exhibit poems as sculpture with recent shows in London\, Hamburg\, Melbourne\, Porto\, Santander\, and Tucson.
