Set in wartime Sarawak, *The Crossing of the Boars* (Ye zhu du he,
2018, rev. 2024), released in English this year, dazzles with a wartime mystery enmeshed in an
ecological fantasia: ghostly colonists mating like guppies, macaques mirroring Japanese war
criminals, bomber storks, ominous urinating porcupines, wildfire-igniting squirrels, monstrous
quagmires, vengeful flying she-vampires, and herd upon herd of insatiable bearded pigs.

Christopher Rea discusses how he and Julie M. Wang rendered this award-winning novel into
English, including the process of researching a historical epic whose architectonic sentences
teem with flora and fauna found only in Borneo. In doing so, he offers answers to a more
general question: When faced with a challenging text, how can a translator get out alive?

Christopher Rea is professor of modern Chinese literature at the University of British Columbia.
His book-length translations from Chinese into English include *China’s Chaplin: Comic Stories
and Farces by Xu Zhuodai* (Cornell, open access), *The Book of Swindles and More Swindles from
the Late Ming* (both with Bruce Rusk, Columbia), *Humans, Beasts, and Ghosts by Qian Zhongshu*
(Columbia), and Zhang Guixing’s *The Crossing of the Boars: A Novel* (with Julie M. Wang,
Columbia, 2026). He is also the founding director and lead translator of the Chinese Film
Classics Project, the world’s largest free online collection of early Chinese films with English
subtitles.

https://cup.columbia.edu/book/the-crossing-of-the-boars/9780231217668/

https://asia.ubc.ca/profile/christopher-rea/

*If there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you, please contact us. Register for the Zoom webinar at: http://myumi.ch/PbkD4

There is little that connects the Chinese Communist Party, British Conservative Party, Kenyan leadership, Silicon Valley right-wing, and elites in post-Soviet states. But they all exhibit an acute fascination with founding Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, invoking select strands of his political thought and practice to legitimate their own political projects or imaginaries. Yet, while interest in Lee outside of Singapore is consistently growing, within Singaporean society there is a growing sense of exhaustion and indifference in appealing to his figure – especially when it is perceived as a cynical means to derive political profit for his long-ruling People’s Action Party (PAP). Using this observation as a launching pad, this lecture explores the contradictions of Lee’s legacy and develops rudiments to pursue a global history of Lee Kuan Yew, bringing his international reception and footprints within a single frame. This entails treating Lee as a global figure of world-historical importance, situating his political thought, movements, and interventions within global trends and networks. While this global approach magnifies Lee’s stature, it also amplifies the less comfortable aspects of his legacy: his “original sin” is no longer the detention without trial, but his role in legitimizing the bloody Vietnam War. A global history of Lee thereby presents intensified contradictions to grapple with.

Quah Say Jye is a Klarman Postdoctoral Fellow at Cornell University.
