What remains is the question of what we will carry forward\, and the manner in which we refuse to surrender ourselves. Will Oldham’s new album\, We Are Together Again\, feels like an answer to these questions. \n\nIn Oldham’s songs - and in the circle of others who’ve gathered beneath the name Bonnie “Prince” Billy on this endeavor - friendship\, community\, and the stubborn joy of making art with others become a means of persistence. This isn’t to say that the record is a denial of collapse\, which would be delusion\, so much as that models defiance by remaining fully human\, fully joyful\, in a world with a diminishing horizon... I’m talking about Oldham’s record\, to be sure\, but I think the answers he suggests in We Are Together Again speak to the only meaningful choices any of us can make at this point in all of the agonizing everything. \n\n\nA sense of human beauty runs through everything here. DESCRIPTION:Poetry Night in Ann Arbor is a dynamic poetry variety show that brings together student poets from the campus and community with two spectacular renowned poets—Matthew Olzmann and Vievee Francis—for a lively and entertaining evening of phenomenal poetry.\n\nMatthew Olzmann is the author of Constellation Route as well as two previous collections of poetry. His next book An Oral History of the Flat Earth is forthcoming from Alice James Books in 2027. A recipient of fellowships from Kundiman\, MacDowell\, and the National Endowment for the Arts\, Olzmann’s poems have appeared in the New York Times\, Best American Poetry\, The Pushcart Prizes\, Kenyon Review\, and elsewhere. He is an assistant professor at Dartmouth College in the Department of English and Creative Writing.\n\nVievee Francis is the author of four books of poetry: The Shared World (Northwestern University Press\, 2023)\; Forest Primeval (TriQuarterly Books\, 2015)\, winner of the 2017 Kingsley Tufts Award and the Hurston Wright Legacy Award\; Horse in the Dark (Northwestern University Press\, 2012)\, winner of the Cave Canem Northwestern University Press Poetry Prize\; and Blue-Tail Fly (Wayne State University Press\, 2006). Forthcoming are a memoir\, Ugly\, and her fifth volume of poetry\, Cleaning the Houses of the Dead. Her work has appeared in numerous print and online journals\, textbooks\, and anthologies including Poetry\, Best American Poetry\, spin.com\, and Angles of Ascent: A Norton Anthology of Contemporary African American Poetry. Born in West Texas and raised in Metropolitan Detroit\, Francis\, along with composer Jonathan Berger and artist Enrico Riley\, wrote the libretto for the transdisciplinary opera The Ritual of Breath. She received a 2024 Guggenheim Fellowship and the 2021 Aiken Taylor Award for Modern American Poetry. She has also been the recipient of a Rona Jaffe Award and a Kresge Fellowship. She is a Professor of English and Creative Writing at Dartmouth College.\n\nMatthew and Vievee will be joined by outstanding student poets from the University of Michigan and Ann Arbor Public Schools\, with an opportunity for volunteers from the audience to get involved in an on-stage haiku battle.\n\nThis event is organized by Lloyd Scholars for Writing and the Arts (LSWA) with additional support from the Arts Initiative.

The eternal nature of it\, the idea that only love is real.” She describes his presence as palpable throughout the making of the record: “David was with us every day in the studio. All six of us in the band felt his presence.”\n\nWhile widely recognized for her acclaimed acting career spanning film\, television\, and stage\, music has remained a constant throughline in Witt’s life. A classically trained pianist who supported herself as a musician when she first moved to Los Angeles\, Witt has long integrated music into her creative identity\, both through her own songwriting and in many of the roles she has portrayed onscreen. She's released multiple full-length albums\, including Revisionary History (2015)\, The Conduit (2021)\, and I Think I'm Spending Christmas With You (2024). It seemed to go by in a blur\, pounding the road\, seeing the world\, raising babies and sending them to college\, mowing lawns\, romances\, marriages\, high school drama\, endless airports\, the nights at the Hollywood Bowl\, the night at the Red Barn in Louisville dodging various barroom projectiles\, frozen diesel lines\, blast furnace desert heat\, hours of practice\, late nights and early mornings\, and lots and lots and lots of laughter.\n \n40 years ago.  No laptops\, no cellular phones\, no Google\, no downloads\, no Skype\, no Tweets\, no Apple\, no Microsoft\, no texting\, no electric cars\, no Uber.  A different world.  But there were three young men with drive and wit who wanted to keep a special music alive.  They believed in preserving the heritage of Western Music and presenting it to a new generation.  They believed in entertaining\, and they did so… entertaining themselves as well as the audience!  And they believed in creating original Western Music to continue the tradition\, not just seal it in amber as a museum piece.  What they did not realize at the time was that they would be doing the same thing 40 years later.\n \n40 years ago\, Ranger Doug\, Too Slim and the late Windy Bill Collins played that first date on the bitter cold evening of November 11th\, 1977 at Herr Harry’s Frank N’ Stein Rathskeller in Nashville\, and small listening room dates followed.  By August of the following year demand was building\, and while Windy Bill left\, Woody Paul joined\, and the true professional beginnings of the band began at the Kentucky State Fair\, where the trio played 10 days for $2500- and bought their own rooms and meals out of that!\n \nA first wave followed\, including appearances on Austin City Limits\; recording contracts with Rounder\, then MCA\, then Columbia\; guest appearances on the Grand Ole Opry leading to membership in 1982\; and a three-year run on The Nashville Network with a TV show called “Tumbleweed Theater\,” which yet in turn led to a seven-year run on public radio with “Riders Radio Theater.  People Magazine\, interested in the Riders phenomenon\, ran a story which happily caught the eye of a Hollywood producer.\n \nAnd so the second wave broke\, sending the boys to Hollywood to star in “Riders In The Sky” on CBS for a year on Saturday mornings\, introducing them to yet another generation.  More recordings\, endless show dates\, and television appearances followed for a decade before the fine folks at Pixar called and asked the quartet – by this time they had been joined by Joey the Cowpolka King – to sing a tune called “Woody’s Roundup” in the movie “Toy Story 2.”  Thus\, the third wave began\, highlighted by a number of projects for Disney\, including two albums\, both of which won GRAMMY Awards!\n \nThe creation of satellite radio has recently given them a new platform\, as they continue to produce episodes of the award winning “Classic Cowboy Corral” on Sirius/XM.\n \nStill more road dates and recordings (several on their own Riders Radio Records label) and other film and television projects have filled the days and weeks and years\, and since the quartet has slowed up very little\, the numbers begin to add up:  an astonishing 7\,200+ appearances\, 35 years on the Grand Ole Opry\, 40 records albums (well\, now CDs\,) and tours of all 50 states and all over the world.  Honors accumulated as well.  In addition to the two Grammy Awards\, Riders received numerous awards from the Western Music Association\, including the highest: membership in the Western Music Hall of Fame\; numerous Wrangler awards from the Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Museum\; awards from the Academy of Western Artists\; enshrinement in the Walkway of Western Stars\, and more.  What began as a celebration of classic Western Music and an evening of hilarity has become a career\, and that career has become a legend\, one which\, 40 years on\, shows no signs of stopping or even slowing down much.\n \nRanger Doug\, Too Slim\, Woody Paul and Joey the Cowpolka King… 40 years on\, “The Cowboy Way.”

After releasing two independent albums\, I’ve Suffered A Head Injury and Pop Smear\, the group quickly garnered a regional following for its textured rock songs distinguished by innovative arrangements\, soul-searching lyrics and layered vocals.\n\nThe success of both albums attracted the attention of RCA Records\, which released their platinum major label debut Villains in 1996. The album featured the radio hit ‘Photograph’ and the #1 single ‘The Freshmen\,’ one of the most successful multi-format tracks of 1997 and winner of an ASCAP Pop Award. Just unsaturated\, unadulterated art. Real humans making real noise in real time.\n\nJoyRide is my 14th solo album (not counting the Rugburns records\, live things\, and bootlegs floating around). I tour nonstop\, so I usually have to be tricked into a studio under the guise of “just one song.”\n\nThe record opens with “If It Bleeds It Leads” — my kinda classic mischief:\n\n“I can never watch the news with you because you yell back — you scream like they can hear you in the television set.”\n\nThen comes “Petrichor\,” inspired by the beautiful smell after it rains. (I later discovered Phish has one too\, but mine’s the barefoot cousin at brunch.)\n\n“At It Again” follows\, a cosmic co-write with my brother-from-another-meerkat Jim Lauderdale\, featuring Bryan Owings and Chris Donohue (Emmylou Harris’s rhythm section).\n\nThe title track “JoyRide” feels like a warm hug after a long road trip:\n\n“Free hugs\, no shrugs\, wrong drugs\, bedbugs. Smiles\, laughter\, for here ever after.”\n\nSide one ends with “The Son Of God.” \nA nutso magutso  track of a conversation I  may or may not have had with Jesus.“ I get to play both parts. Myself AND Jesus.\n“The son of God contacted me about buying some Funk and Wagnalls encyclopedias. I said hello who’s this?”\n“It’s Jesus”\n“Jesus who?”\n“Jesus H. Christ. God’s son.”\n“How’d you get my number?”\n“I have everyone’s number.”\n“Even Liberace?”\n“He’s on dead people's speed dial.”\n\nI will probably get crucified for this song\, but hopefully it will be an AI video made by an angry man living in his mom’s basement. \n\nSide two kicks off with “Love a Little Bigger” — a rowdy co-write with Vince Herman of Leftover Salmon. It opens with:\n\n“Jacob took a hammer and he went up a hill\, built a nice house for his best friend Bill…”\nand ends with a singalong reminder to forgive faster and swim more often.\n\n“Fixin’ Up” (track seven) is my secret favorite — like a quarter from the Tooth Fairy you gotta dig around for.\n“New Tattoo” follows — about a dude who got his lover’s face inked on his own face. (Bad plan\, good song.)\n“Brand New Liver” imagines swapping out your old one like a water pump instead of quitting drinking.\nAnd then comes the closer: “Hairlift.”\n\nThat one has my favorite line I’ve ever written:\n\n“I used to play ping pong with my old friend Mao Zedong. I thought he told me I was well hung\, but he was speaking in the mother tongue.”\n\nThat’s JoyRide. Emily first began joining them on stage when she was just eight years old\, and increasingly since graduating from college in 2016. All three are versatile instrumentalists and excellent singers. They’ve played an annual family concert for Ark audiences on the Sunday after Thanksgiving every year since 1994 to benefit Mott Children’s Hospital\, where Emily was born. \nSan and Laz's recordings have won numerous awards from\, among others\, the American Library Association\, Parents' Choice Magazine\, National Parenting Publications\, the Wolf Trap Institute\, Early Childhood News and ASCAP. Emily\, who studied classical violin for over a decade\, is an excellent violinist in a variety of styles including classical\, jazz and folk. DESCRIPTION:A holiday show and more\n\n2026 Christmas Tour Thoughts\n\nOne December\, not long after Over the Rhine began recording and touring\, we were invited to perform some seasonal songs on a public radio station. We worked up a few carols and traditional tunes. \n\n\nIt actually felt really good and conjured up an unusual mix of feelings from childhood: innocence\, loss\, wonder\, joy\, sadness. I think we were surprised.\n\nPeople must have tuned into the radio broadcast\, because we began receiving inquiries as to whether we had recorded any of our Christmas songs. \n\nIn December of 1996 – can it really be 30 years ago? – we recorded and released our first song cycle of some of the Christmas carols that still haunted us. We included a few original tunes and called our wintry mix The Darkest Night Of The Year. Folks began snatching up copies and seemed to agree that they hadn’t heard anything quite like it.\n\nWe began playing concerts around the Midwest every December and found that the rooms were usually packed full of people who had bundled in out of the cold. If you stepped outside during intermission\, you could make ghosts with your breath in the crisp night air. And it was dark – oh so dark: a time of year with its own music.\n\nA decade later\, in 2006\, we released our first full collection of original Christmas/holiday songs called Snow Angels. What is it about Christmas music and the undeniable gravitational pull it exerts on some songwriters? So many Christmas songs have already been written. I think we remain genuinely curious about the ones that haven't yet been written.\n\nWe continued to tour every December and these special year-winding-down concerts began to feel like an annual tradition – gatherings of extended musical family\, without whom\, we’d be homeless.\n\nWe released our third holiday album of original songs\, Blood Oranges In The Snow\, in December of 2014. One enthusiastic fan wrote to us\, I just love your new Christmas album\, Blood On The Oranges. We’re dark but not that dark.\n\nOn our 2026 tour\, we will be leaning into some harmonies and making an intimate but hopefully holy ruckus. It won’t be all Christmas music: we’ll certainly mix in tunes from many of our records along the way. On her new album\, Neon Summer Skin\, Bedouine\, the project of Azniv Korkejian\, explores this feeling of safety long before one can fully understand the concept. Written with vivid\, honest and intimate imagery after visiting her family in Saudi Arabia\, it tells the story of family and upbringing\, and mourns the end of her childhood. There is a singular resonance and newfound heft in this music previously unheard in Bedouine’s discography. \n\nBedouine is known for making gentle\, lilting folk songs that build fingerpicked guitar melodies into tsunamis of emotion. Her masterful songwriting and timeless melodies have earned her praise from publications like Pitchfork\, who said her music “boasts a surreal calm and lived in glow\,” and Rolling Stone\, who lauded her “humble folk-pop brilliance\,” plus an NPR Tiny Desk Concert\, and tours with the likes of Fleet Foxes and Father John Misty. \n\nAs personal as her songs have been\, they’ve often built upon universal experiences. The writing on Neon Summer Skin\, however\, is full of specific memories: a neon swim suit\, beads of water dripping down tangled hair\, the blood of a lamb\, often sacrificed at Syrian weddings\, oozing across the pavement. “It was the first time I had the inclination to write a record about one main subject which gave me a clarity and motivation I hadn't quite had before.” \n\nBedouine started working on the record after a trip to Saudi Arabia to visit her parents. She correctly assumed it would be her last one there because her family was retiring to Armenia. “For my 20s and much of my 30s\, I couldn’t sit still\,” she says. “I would pack my car and move to a new place. I was so curious about my own independence that it just didn't occur to me for the longest time to mourn the past. But after that trip\, I came home and was so devastated. I couldn't place the feeling immediately\, but as I started writing\, I realized I was processing that I wasn’t ready to stop being somebody’s kid. \n\nShe co-produced most of the songs with her longtime collaborator\, Gus Seyffert\, and wrote with the sweet pop melodies of Todd Rundgren\, Karen Carpenter\, and Carole King in mind. She also worked on a couple of tracks with producer Jonathan Rado with Michael and Brian D’Addario of the Lemon Twigs.  “It was important to me to try to approach some of the production of this record a little differently\, just to try something new\,” she says. The result is a fuller\, more playful sound\, at times grand and orchestral\, shimmery and surreal\, inflected with bits of psychedelia\, bossa nova\, and jazz.

Driven by fiery fiddle and singing guitar\, soaring mandolin and deep bass this group presents Bluegrass in a rip-roaring performance you won't want to miss. They are currently celebrating the release of their first EP\, \"If It's All Worth It\". Featuring Bubba Wilson on mandolin\, Finn Daigh on violin\, James Bourland on upright bass\, and Steve Pasque on guitar\n\nOpening the night is Michigan-based husband & wife duo\, Ironwood\, with original songs and Folk vibes. Ironwood's music is heavily inspired by both Celtic and American folk genres. Anna sings\, and plays fiddle & mandolin\, while Mark rocks the acoustic guitar\, and electric bass. DESCRIPTION:Jazz influenced indie pop\n\nOn the night of the Fourth of July\, fireworks over Mei Semones' Brooklyn block were competing with something more primal. Up and down the street\, dogs answered each burst with a long\, ragged howl of their own. Semones\, alone in her apartment with her guitar while the rest of the city celebrated outside\, found she didn't mind the solitude. The howling struck her less as a cry for help than as a kind of greeting: proof that she was never really by herself\, not with music always keeping her company. By morning\, she had the seed of the title track for her sophomore album\, Howl.\n \n\"Sometimes making music feels like howling into the universe\,\" Semones says. \"I make music because I like it\, because it feels instinctual — but it also connects me to people close and far. I like to think of this music as my howl.\"\n \nAt 26\, the Brooklyn-based Japanese American guitarist and singer-songwriter — already named an Artist to Watch by The New York Times and Stereogum\, and Artist You Need to Know by Rolling Stone and The FADER — has developed a sound that brings together jazz\, bossa nova\, samba and grungy math rock without treating any of them as separate worlds. Her bilingual songwriting works in much the same way. \n \nGrowing up in Ann Arbor\, Semones began playing piano at age four on an instrument gifted by her Japanese grandmother before picking up electric guitar at 11\, inspired in part by Marty McFly's performance of \"Johnny B. Goode\" in Back to the Future. Semones also spent summers as a child in Yokosuka\, Japan — where her grandmother lived — attending a local elementary school for two weeks each year and spending long afternoons catching cicadas\, playing soccer\, building things with mud\, and searching for rhinoceros beetles. Those unhurried childhood experiences would later shape her 2024 EP\, Kabutomushi\, named after the very beetles she would catch with her school friends in Yokosuka.\n \nIn high school\, she was introduced to jazz through greats like Charlie Parker\, John Coltrane\, Bud Powell\, Thelonious Monk and Wes Montgomery\, and around the same time she discovered bossa nova through João Gilberto's recordings. Why dwell on the past when we could just live in the present because the future won't shut up about how bad it's going to be?\n \nBut with This is the Kit aka Kate Stables (songwriter / banjo strummer / pinhole camera lover / Winchester UK born Paris dweller)\, we're going to have to give time just a modicum of consideration. Because not only is Kate still here and making albums of cataclysmic honesty and welcoming tonal embraces\, they are continuing to grow\, which is probably the only smart way to move forward through time.\n \nThis Is The Kit's music places companionship at a premium\, so being welcomed into its space feels like an obvious privilege\, on record and in concert hall with her stellar supporting cast of Rozi Plain (bass)\, Jamie Whitby-Coles (drums) and Neil Smith (guitar).  And at this current point in our confusing history\, continuing to be here at all\, to stand tall and make music to gather to\, that's a heroic act. Joyful survival as an act of time-wasting\,  I'll take that any day of the week. Look to This Is The Kit to spend at least one day of your week this year\, I guarantee it will be time well wasted.

DESCRIPTION:“an artist known for beguiling melodies and a supple turn of a phrase.” –American Songwriter\n\nIn January 2024\, Kim Richey found herself in Mexico\, gazing out at a sea of people singing along to “I’m Alright\,” one of her classic tracks. The three folks on stage with the veteran\, Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter were also raising their voices in harmony. To her right sat Brandi Carlile\, to her left\, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Brandy Clark. The formidable foursome was participating in a songwriter’s round only half-jokingly dubbed “Titans of Americana” at Carlile’s female-forward Girls Just Wanna Weekend festival on the Riviera Maya in Mexico.\n\n“That was nuts looking out and seeing everybody arm-waving and singing along\,” says Richey\, still both incredulous and cheered by the memory of performing with that supergroup and later appearing alongside other Girls Just Wanna Weekend-ers Annie Lennox\, Lucius\, Allison Russell\, and Sarah McLachlan among others. “It was just like\, ‘wow’!”\n\nThe good news for fans of this particular Titan is a whole new batch of songs to sing along with and arm wave to with the release of her 10th studio album Every New Beginning. The 10 songs on Every New Beginning represent the full spectrum of the Ohio native’s gifts as both a revered songwriter who can leap from melancholy to mirthful in a single couplet — whose songs have been recorded by the likes of Brooks and Dunn\, Patty Loveless\, and Mary Chapin Carpenter — and owner of one of music’s truly celestial voices. \n\nThat voice\, which Brandi Carlile has cited as formative in crafting her own style\, is a widely sought after harmony instrument and has been featured on scores of albums including Jason Isbell’s acclaimed Southeastern\, Trisha Yearwood’s Everybody Knows\, Heartbreaker by Ryan Adams\, Reba McEntire’s Starting Over\, and Has Been by Capt. Kirk himself\, William Shatner\, among many others.
