SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Can AI Reason Through Zoning? How AI Navigates Complex Rules
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\n\nZoning codes shape what can be built and where\, yet their information remains buried in thousands of locally written documents that are difficult to search\, compare\, and analyze at scale. Zoning regulations present four particular challenges: they are heterogeneous\, as jurisdictions organize and express similar rules differently\; interdependent\, as provisions interact through definitions\, exceptions\, overlays\, and cross-references\; multimodal\, as requirements appear in text\, tables\, maps\, and diagrams\; and partly judgment-dependent\, as some provisions require human interpretation and discretion. This talk presents a work-in-progress project that develops an agentic AI approach to transform zoning documents into structured\, traceable regulatory data. Drawing on applications across more than 1\,100 Michigan zoning documents and preliminary evaluations against human-coded data\, I will discuss what AI can and cannot reliably interpret\, where errors arise\, and what these challenges reveal about the limits of computational reasoning over zoning regulations. The talk concludes by exploring a broader vision of computational zoning: making land-use regulations more accessible\, interpretable\, and comparable\, and ultimately supporting inquiries across planning intentions\, zoning rules\, development scenarios\, and community outcomes.

DESCRIPTION:Community partners—spanning nonprofits\, government agencies\, small businesses\, and individuals with specialized expertise—play a vital role in supporting student learning\, contributing to faculty research\, and enhancing university programming. However\, their recognition and compensation across U-M is inconsistent\, due to U-M’s decentralized and complex administrative and financial systems. Throughout 2026\, units across campus have come together with local community partners to discuss these challenges and generate ideas and tools for improving compensation practices and processes at U-M. \nJoin us on December 4th to learn more about this important work. Participants at this virtual session will:\n\nHear insights from community-engaged faculty & staff\, financial administrators\, and community partners about how U-M units can make community partner compensation more transparent and accessible\;\n\nLearn about new tools\, resources\, and cross-unit collaborations with Procurement & Shared Services designed to improve community partner compensation practices at U-M\; and \n\nLearn ways to get involved and support this ongoing effort. \n\nThe session will include brief presentations about ongoing community partner compensation-related projects and a Q&A.
