DESCRIPTION:Visiting artist Olayami Dabls is a storyteller\, curator\, educator\, and mentor. He is the founder of the MBAD African Bead Museum in Detroit. Through material culture\, Dabls presents commentary on the past\, present\, and future from African and African-American perspectives\, with the understanding that generations of African ancestors used visual materials to convey information about their identity as well as send messages for healing and protection. Dabls is a luminary\; for decades he has re-imagined what a museum space can be\, accessible to everyone\, free from the underpinnings of colonialism and the Western\, often white\, frame. *Grand Vision* includes a conceptual installation in the Gallery\, presenting Dabls’s own work in visual conversation with African beads and artifacts from Dabls’s Bead Museum collections. \n\nAdditionally\, Dabls’s iconic outdoor sculpture *Iron Teaching Rocks Table Manners* will be installed on the U-M campus grounds near UMMA\, at the intersection of State Street and South University from September 17- October 11\, 2026. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Surveillance Paternalism: Monitoring Reproduction in Turkey
DESCRIPTION:With the “Hear\, Here” series\, we aim to facilitate conversations around new research in the humanities. Faculty fellows at the Institute for the Humanities will discuss a part of their current project in a short talk followed by a Q & A session.\n\nAbout this talk:\nThis talk examines the rise\, circulation\, and impact of data technologies used to monitor reproductive behaviors in contemporary Turkey. Drawing on ethnographic and archival research\, I show how care and control intertwine in public health through what I call surveillance paternalism. Rather than treating this surveillance as an all-encompassing power\, I argue that it operates not by what is monitored but by what is omitted and rendered invisible in databases\, including labor precarity\, domestic abuse\, and state violence. DESCRIPTION:Visiting artist Olayami Dabls is a storyteller\, curator\, educator\, and mentor. He is the founder of the MBAD African Bead Museum in Detroit. Through material culture\, Dabls presents commentary on the past\, present\, and future from African and African-American perspectives\, with the understanding that generations of African ancestors used visual materials to convey information about their identity as well as send messages for healing and protection. Dabls is a luminary\; for decades he has re-imagined what a museum space can be\, accessible to everyone\, free from the underpinnings of colonialism and the Western\, often white\, frame. *Grand Vision* includes a conceptual installation in the Gallery\, presenting Dabls’s own work in visual conversation with African beads and artifacts from Dabls’s Bead Museum collections. \n\nAdditionally\, Dabls’s iconic outdoor sculpture *Iron Teaching Rocks Table Manners* will be installed on the U-M campus grounds near UMMA\, at the intersection of State Street and South University from September 17- October 11\, 2026. DESCRIPTION:With the “Hear\, Here” series\, we aim to facilitate conversations around new research in the humanities. Faculty fellows at the Institute for the Humanities will discuss a part of their current project in a short talk followed by a Q & A session.\n\nAbout this talk:\nThis talk illuminates the contradictory racial politics of late nineteenth-century African-owned newspapers by analyzing how Fante and Ga pressmen\, who positioned themselves as African defenders of African interests\, deployed racist depictions of the Asante empire in an effort to solicit British protection. This Faustian bargain backfired and when British protection led to colonial conquest\, these same newspapers mobilized race as the primary language of political dissent against British rule.\n\nCarina Ray is a 2026-27 Helmut F. Stern Faculty Fellow at the Institute for the Humanities and Associate Professor\, History.

They play a crucial role in helping us understand the nation’s complex past. This December\, Lonnie G. Bunch III will step down after seven years as Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. Join us for one of his last public conversations in the role\, a dynamic exchange with Lynette Clemetson\, Director of Wallace House Center for Journalists\, on the significance of the 250th anniversary of the United States. At a moment in which discussions about our shared past and collective future feel especially urgent\, this is a rare chance to hear a leader reflect on a career devoted to informing and inspiring Americans to strive for the public good. \n\nQ & A will follow and copies of Secretary Bunch's book *A Fool's Errand: Creating the National Museum of African American History and Culture in the Age of Bush\, Obama\, and Trump* will be available for purchase. \n\nParking is available at the Thayer Parking Structure\, 216 S. Thayer\, at the standard charge of $10/vehicle.\n\nLonnie G. Bunch III is the 14th Secretary of the Smithsonian. He assumed his position June 16\, 2019. As Secretary\, he oversees 21 museums\, 21 libraries\, the National Zoo\, numerous research centers\, and several education units and centers. Two new museums—the National Museum of the American Latino and the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum—are in development. Bunch was the founding director of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture. Bunch chronicled the creation of the museum in his book\, *A Fool’s Errand: Creating the National Museum of African American History and Culture in the Age of Bush\, Obama\, and Trump*\, and is the first historian to be Secretary of the Institution. Since 2024\, Bunch has been Honorary Professor of Practice at Queen’s University Belfast. A member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences\, Bunch received France’s highest award\, The Legion of Honor\, in 2021.\n\nLynette Clemetson is Director of Wallace House Center for Journalists\, home of the Knight-Wallace Fellowships for Journalists and the Livingston Awards for Young Journalists at the University of Michigan. She came to the university from NPR where she was Senior Director of Strategy and Content Initiatives\, developing and guiding projects across broadcast\, digital and events to develop new audiences. Her career in journalism spans newspapers\, magazines and audio across a range of platforms. As a reporter\, she was a Washington-based correspondent for *The New York Times *and *Newsweek*\, writing about politics\, social issues and demographic change. Prior to her domestic correspondent work\, she was an international correspondent for *Newsweek *based in Hong Kong\, where she covered the former British colony’s return to Chinese rule in 1997. She moved into digital strategy and leadership in 2008 as the founding managing editor of TheRoot.com\, launched for The Washington Post Company with Henry Louis Gates Jr. She is also the former Director of Content Strategy at Pew Center on the States.\n\n*This 2026 Marc and Constance Jacobson Lecture is presented by the Institute for the Humanities in partnership with Wallace House Center for Journalists. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:What’s Our Impact?: Understanding how the Arts & Humanities Matter
DESCRIPTION:As people working in the humanities and the arts\, we know our work matters–to our fields\, to our disciplines\, and to society. We have seen how the arts and humanities transform perception\, provide expertise\, and help people grapple with the biggest questions about what it means to be human and to live in an increasingly interconnected\, yet often divided world. And\, in both the arts and humanities\, we know UM faculty are contributing to their disciplines in deeply meaningful ways. \n\nYet\, for all we know about these positive effects\, arts and humanities research is often imagined to be at odds with the metric-driven language of “impact”--a term often seen as imposed from fields outside the arts and humanities. At the same time\, “impact” has become the dominant framework for measuring the value of academic research. As a result\, arts and humanities faculty are often called upon to describe our “impact” in ways that are legible to University leadership and funding imperatives\, even as we feel uneasy about how to answer such calls in ways that are authentic to our work. How do we avoid finding ourselves outside terms that are increasingly important in the fight for the continued growth and resilience of higher education in the U.S?\n\n“What’s Our Impact?: Understanding how the Arts & Humanities Matter” is a series of events slated for October 29 & 30 on UM’s Ann Arbor campus. A joint initiative of the UM Arts Initiative\, Office of Vice President of Research (OVPR)\, and the Institute for Humanities\, the gathering will serve arts and humanities faculty seeking more ways to discuss their work in terms that are legible within the ascendant impact paradigm\, while also ensuring that those terms are authentic to our disciplines\, methods\, and creative practice. Through a public conversation\, facilitated workshop\, keynote from UM leadership\, and a panel with funders\, the 1.5 day long event will bring together experts–those engaging “impact” in their research\, those in leadership\, and those community partners with whom we work–and put them in conversation with arts and humanities leadership and researchers at the University of Michigan. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:What’s Our Impact?: Understanding how the Arts & Humanities Matter
DESCRIPTION:As people working in the humanities and the arts\, we know our work matters–to our fields\, to our disciplines\, and to society. We have seen how the arts and humanities transform perception\, provide expertise\, and help people grapple with the biggest questions about what it means to be human and to live in an increasingly interconnected\, yet often divided world. And\, in both the arts and humanities\, we know UM faculty are contributing to their disciplines in deeply meaningful ways. \n\nYet\, for all we know about these positive effects\, arts and humanities research is often imagined to be at odds with the metric-driven language of “impact”--a term often seen as imposed from fields outside the arts and humanities. At the same time\, “impact” has become the dominant framework for measuring the value of academic research. As a result\, arts and humanities faculty are often called upon to describe our “impact” in ways that are legible to University leadership and funding imperatives\, even as we feel uneasy about how to answer such calls in ways that are authentic to our work. How do we avoid finding ourselves outside terms that are increasingly important in the fight for the continued growth and resilience of higher education in the U.S?\n\n“What’s Our Impact?: Understanding how the Arts & Humanities Matter” is a series of events slated for October 29 & 30 on UM’s Ann Arbor campus. A joint initiative of the UM Arts Initiative\, Office of Vice President of Research (OVPR)\, and the Institute for Humanities\, the gathering will serve arts and humanities faculty seeking more ways to discuss their work in terms that are legible within the ascendant impact paradigm\, while also ensuring that those terms are authentic to our disciplines\, methods\, and creative practice. Through a public conversation\, facilitated workshop\, keynote from UM leadership\, and a panel with funders\, the 1.5 day long event will bring together experts–those engaging “impact” in their research\, those in leadership\, and those community partners with whom we work–and put them in conversation with arts and humanities leadership and researchers at the University of Michigan. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Companions in Captivity: Animals in the Carceral Literature of Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union
DESCRIPTION:With the “Hear\, Here” series\, we aim to facilitate conversations around new research in the humanities. Faculty fellows at the Institute for the Humanities will discuss a part of their current project in a short talk followed by a Q & A session.\n\nAbout this talk:\nThis lecture presents the early stages of a new research project on the role of animals in prison memoirs from Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union. Rather than offering definitive conclusions\, the talk will outline a preliminary research agenda and explore how encounters with animals may have shaped experiences of captivity\, survival\, and humanity within carceral systems. I begin with a contemporary example from the United States\, where incarcerated individuals in prison dog-training programs prepare service animals for people with disabilities\, creating an unexpected relationship between imprisonment\, care\, rehabilitation\, and the human–animal bond.\n\nThe lecture then places this phenomenon in historical perspective by examining memoirs and oral histories of political prisoners\, Gulag survivors\, and dissidents from Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union. My goal is to identify recurring patterns and raise questions rather than present a finished interpretation. In these accounts\, animals emerge as companions\, witnesses\, sources of comfort\, reminders of life beyond prison walls\, and reflections of prisoners' own vulnerability\, while also occupying roles within systems of labor\, deprivation\, violence\, and survival.
