SUMMARY:Performance:UMS presents My Brightest Diamond
DESCRIPTION:My Brightest Diamond is the moniker of Shara Nova\, a classically trained vocalist and self- taught multi-instrumentalist whose music is as dazzling as it is shape-shifting. Since assembling the project in 2006\, Nova has consistently resisted genre conventions\, blending elements of rock\, art pop\, and chamber music into a sound unmistakably her own.\n\nRaised in a family of traveling evangelists\, Nova spent her childhood crisscrossing the country\, her father leading church choirs and her mother playing organ. When the family settled outside Detroit in the early ’90s\, she absorbed the sounds of hip-hop and soul filling the airwaves\, alongside the likes of Samuel Barber and Bach in her high school chamber choir. After studying classical voice at the University of North Texas\, Nova relocated to New York City\, where she formed My Brightest Diamond\, producing six bold and genre-defying albums\, each inhabiting a distinct musical landscape while remaining anchored by Nova’s singular voice. My Brightest Diamond closes the Freighthouse residency with this performance.\n\nAlcohol will be available for purchase for ages 21+ with ID.

DESCRIPTION:One of the most respected and creatively insatiable musicians performing today\, Bruce Hornsby has continually redefined his sound since his breakthrough album The Way It Is.\n\nFrom chart-topping pop to bluegrass\, jazz\, classical\, and electronica\, the Grammy winner’s genre-crossing career reflects a restless creative spirit. Early success led him to tour with Steve Winwood\, Eurythmics\, and the Grateful Dead\, a group he joined for more than 100 performances over five years. Along the way\, he has influenced artists such as Bon Iver and Ryan Adams and composed music for several of Spike Lee’s films.\n\nHornsby always delivers performances that are spontaneous and electrifying\, and he makes his UMS debut in this concert with The Noisemakers\, featuring material from throughout his storied career in addition to music from his new album\, Indigo Park.

DESCRIPTION:Few figures throughout jazz history have experienced the kind of meteoric success that vocalist Samara Joy has\, especially at such a young age. At just 26\, her career is nothing short of sensational.\n\nWith six Grammy Awards to her name\, including a Best New Artist win as well as an NAACP Image Award\, Joy has achieved the kind of profile typically reserved for pop celebrities.\n\nHer visibility has made her a steady presence on network TV and a favorite among younger music fans on TikTok\, where she’s helped introduce timeless American music to new generations. With each performance\, she has earned a reputation as a masterful interpreter of jazz standards as well as her own songs\, drawing comparisons to her legendary jazz heroines\, including Sarah Vaughan\, Betty Carter\, Abbey Lincoln\, and Carmen McRae.\n\nThe Bronx native began singing as a child and won the Best Vocalist at the Jazz at Lincoln Center’s prestigious Essentially Ellington program before studying jazz at SUNY Purchase\, winning the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Competition while still a student. Joy returns to Hill Auditorium with her septet after her sold-out 2024 UMS debut.

Featuring two pianists and six dancers\, the new work receives its world premiere at the Power Center in October. Smith and Schraiber started their careers as dancers with the Batsheva Dance Company and now return as world-renowned creators whose choreography has been commissioned by The Paris Opera Ballet\, Royal Danish Ballet\, National Ballet of Canada\, and Martha Graham Dance Company\, to name just a few.\n\nTheir collaborative approach to dance theater results in a stunning new ensemble work that features New York City Ballet principal dancer Sara Mearns. Mearns began studying dance at age 13 in South Carolina and entered the School of American Ballet\, the official school of New York City Ballet\, in 2001.
