The founders looked to the Romans as an ideal for their own republican aspirations: institutions that tempered the excesses of the *populus*; statesmen like Cicero who projected an unflinching defense of the Republic; and stories that described their own experiment of strangers fleeing from their homes to carve out a new community from the wilderness. But the United States also inherited another aspect of Rome that grew out of these rugged, founding stories. It was not the enlightened, republican body but the gladiatorial body that emerged as a rival conception of what an American looks like. The gladiatorial body, which received prominence in outlawed, bare-knuckle boxing, as well as the theater, was physically imposing, violent, anti-intellectual, and brash. This talk takes us inside the worlds of the gladiator and bare-knuckle boxer to understand their allure as images of the citizen body.\n\nJoin us in Room 125 of the Kelsey Museum\u2019s Newberry Hall to hear from Dr. Dean Hammer, the John W. In their work, poetry becomes a site where language registers the immediate pressures of socio-political reality: austerity, precarity, migration, gendered and racialized violence, and the restructuring of public space. The poet of the twenty-first century emerges as a figure who inhabits contradiction, between private vulnerability and public intervention, historical burden and utopian projection. This lecture argues that contemporary Greek poetry offers not only aesthetic innovation but also a form of political thinking: a practice that interrogates reality, reclaims history, and reimagines the collective horizon.\n\nAthina Rossoglou is a graduate of the Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpreting at the Ionian University. She has pursued studies in European Civilization and holds a postgraduate degree in Public History. She is currently a doctoral candidate at the Ionian University. Her research examines Greek poetry of the 21st century, with particular emphasis on the ways in which it engages with the concepts of history, nationhood, public space, and identity formation. Drawing on the new co-authored volume, *Heritage Forensics: Cultural on the Front Lines of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Conflict*, the presentation examines how cultural sites became entangled in the conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh during the interwar period (1994-2020). The talk considers how satellite-based heritage forensics is being deployed prospectively, to monitor hundreds of Armenian sites in Karabakh following Azerbaijan's 2023 takeover of the region and the displacement of its Armenian population. In doing so, it asks: how can satellite-based monitoring function as a form of \"counter-forensics,\" turning surveillance technologies developed for military purposes back on the state? Can heritage forensics move us beyond retrospective documentation to actively deter erasure and support truth, reconciliation, and accountability wherever cultural heritage is at stake?\n\nLori Khatchadourian is Professor of Near Eastern Studies and Anthropology at Cornell University, and co-founder and co-director of Caucasus Heritage Watch. She currently serves as Director of the Cornell Institute of Archaeology and Material Studies. Khatchadourian\u2019s research spans the fields of archaeology, social anthropology, and heritage studies, with a particular focus on Armenia, the wider South Caucasus, and neighboring regions. Current projects explore the archaeology of modernity, including problems of genocide, deindustrialization, and the entanglements of cultural heritage and war. She is the co-author of *Heritage Forensics: Culture on the Front Lines of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Conflict* (Cornell, 2026) and author of Imperial Matter: Ancient Persia and the Archaeology of Empires (UC Press, 2016).
