DESCRIPTION:Join us for *Film Sampler*\, a series of film screenings focused on themes of protest and resistance.\n\nWatch a screening of *Stonewall Uprising *(2010\, 90 min)\, followed by a Talk Back with Clare Croft and Umayyah Cable.\n\nWhen police raided the Stonewall Inn\, a popular gay bar in the Greenwich Village section of New York City on June 28\, 1969\, the street erupted into violent protests that lasted for the next six days. DESCRIPTION:Join award-winning artist Holly Bass for a tour of We Hold These Truths\, her largest exhibition to date. We Hold These Truths marks the return of visitors to UMMA’s iconic Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch Apse following a nearly year-long restoration of its signature marble floor\, transforming the storied space into a sequence of encounters with rooms\, replicas\, and acts of writing that move through the nation’s past and present.\n\nHolly Bass is the Penny Stamps School of Art and Design 2025-2026 Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence whose work will be featured in an upcoming exhibition at the University of Michigan Museum of Art. Known for her genre-defying practice that spans dance\, theater\, visual art\, and writing\, Bass is an award-winning artist and cultural worker based in Washington\, DC. Her work — held in the collections of the National Gallery of Art and the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery — frequently engages communities through workshops\, devised theater\, and participatory installations.

Born in Chicago to Punjabi immigrant parents\, he earned a B.A. in Philosophy from Loyola University Chicago\, an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from the University of Michigan\, and a Ph.D. in English from Ohio University. Bolina currently resides in Florida\, where he serves as Chair of the Department of English and Creative Writing and teaches in the M.F.A. program at the University of Miami.\n\nOften blending personal narrative with politics and metaphysics\, Bolina’s poetry is noted for its investigation of the “perceptual and sonic ground” of modern life. He is the author of four full-length poetry collections\, including his debut *Carrier Wave* (2007)—adapted from his M.F.A. thesis at the University of Michigan—*Phantom Camera *(2013)\, and *The 44th of July* (2019). His most recent collection\, *English as a Second Language and Other Poems* (2023)\, which was awarded the 2025 Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award from Claremont Graduate University\, continues his deep dive into cultural identity. Beyond poetry\, Bolina gained significant recognition for his 2020 essay collection\, *Of Color*\, which provides a poignant examination of racial perception and the complexities of the American dream. \n\nBolina’s writing has been recognized with numerous awards. His accolades include the Green Rose Prize for *Phantom Camera*\, the Colorado Prize for Poetry for *Carrier Wave*\, and a long-listing for the PEN America Open Book Award for *The 44th of July*. DESCRIPTION:Part of UMMA's Re-opening Celebration Weekend!\n\nJoin us for a discussion with artist Rick Lowe on the occasion of the opening of his largest solo museum exhibition in the United States—*Black Wall Street Journey: Re and De Imagining Black Progress*. Inspired by the rebuilding of Tulsa’s Greenwood neighborhood following the 1921 Tulsa Massacre\, Lowe started *Black Wall Street Journey* in 2018 and has since produced numerous public art presentations\, installations\, research\, and other projects. At UMMA\, *Re and De Imagining Black Progress* includes new paintings\, sculpture\, and public installations that turn eight years of research into bold visual form that together examine how Black prosperity\, resilience\, and self-determination are represented\, measured\, and understood.\n\nA significant amount of Lowe’s research took place during his three-year residency at U-M’s Institute for Social Research (ISR) and included deep engagement with researchers\, data scientists and dozens of students. To mark the opening\, Lowe will be joined by key collaborators Director of ISR Kathleen Cagney\, U-M Political Science Professor Christian Davenport\, and exhibition curator Abigail Winograd. Seats are offered on a first come\, first served basis\; please arrive early to secure a spot.\n\nTisa Bryant is the author of *Unexplained Presence* (Leon Works\, 2007)\, a collection of hybrid essays on black presences in film\, literature and visual art. She is co-editor of the cross-referenced journal of narrative possibility\, *The Encyclopedia Project\,* and co-editor\, with Ernest Hardy\, of *War Diaries*\, an anthology on black gay men’s desire and survival\, published in 2010 by AIDS Project Los Angeles\, and a finalist for a 2010 LAMBDA literary award. Her essays have appeared in exhibition catalogs for visual artists Laylah Ali\, Jaime Cortez\, Wura-Natasha Ogunji\, Suné Woods and Cauleen Smith\, and is forthcoming in the anthology *Letters to the Future: Black Experimental Women Writers*\, and in a catalogue of site-specific art from The New School. She has done numerous presentations of cinema essays\, most recently at ALOUD's \"School of Prince\" event at the Los Angeles Public Library\, and at \"Speak Nearby\,\" a symposium of text and performance inspired by Trinh T. Minh-ha. Tisa Bryant was a commissioned writer/researcher for Radio Imagination\, Clockshop’s year-long Los Angeles celebration of science fiction writer Octavia Butler\, in collaboration with the Huntington Library in Pasadena\, which houses the Octavia E. Butler Papers. They play a crucial role in helping us understand the nation’s complex past. Join us for a dynamic conversation with Lonnie G. Bunch III\, Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution and Lynette Clemetson\, Director of Wallace House Center for Journalists\, as they reflect on the significance of the 250th anniversary of the United States.  At a moment in which discussions about our shared past and collective future feel especially urgent\, this event offers an opportunity to learn from a leader who has devoted his career to informing and inspiring Americans to strive for the public good. \n\nQ & A will follow and copies of Secretary Bunch's book *A Fool's Errand: Creating the National Museum of African American History and Culture in the Age of Bush\, Obama\, and Trump* will be available for purchase. \n\nParking is available at the Thayer Parking Structure\, 216 S. Thayer\, at the standard charge of $10/vehicle.\n\nLonnie G. Bunch III is the 14th Secretary of the Smithsonian. He assumed his position June 16\, 2019. As Secretary\, he oversees 21 museums\, 21 libraries\, the National Zoo\, numerous research centers\, and several education units and centers. Two new museums—the National Museum of the American Latino and the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum—are in development. Bunch was the founding director of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture. Bunch chronicled the creation of the museum in his book\, *A Fool’s Errand: Creating the National Museum of African American History and Culture in the Age of Bush\, Obama\, and Trump*\, and is the first historian to be Secretary of the Institution. Since 2024\, Bunch has been Honorary Professor of Practice at Queen’s University Belfast. A member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences\, Bunch received France’s highest award\, The Legion of Honor\, in 2021.\n\nLynette Clemetson is Director of Wallace House Center for Journalists\, home of the Knight-Wallace Fellowships for Journalists and the Livingston Awards for Young Journalists at the University of Michigan. She came to the university from NPR where she was Senior Director of Strategy and Content Initiatives\, developing and guiding projects across broadcast\, digital and events to develop new audiences. Her career in journalism spans newspapers\, magazines and audio across a range of platforms. As a reporter\, she was a Washington-based correspondent for *The New York Times *and *Newsweek*\, writing about politics\, social issues and demographic change. Prior to her domestic correspondent work\, she was an international correspondent for *Newsweek *based in Hong Kong\, where she covered the former British colony’s return to Chinese rule in 1997. She moved into digital strategy and leadership in 2008 as the founding managing editor of TheRoot.com\, launched for The Washington Post Company with Henry Louis Gates Jr. She is also the former Director of Content Strategy at Pew Center on the States.\n\n*This 2026 Marc and Constance Jacobson Lecture is presented by the Institute for the Humanities in partnership with Wallace House Center for Journalists. Seats are offered on a first come\, first served basis\; please arrive early to secure a spot.\n\nTony Tulathimutte is the author of *Private Citizens* and *Rejection*. A graduate of Stanford University's Symbolic Systems program\, he took creative writing classes with Adam Johnson\, ZZ Packer\, and Elizabeth Tallent. After graduating\, he published a handful of stories\, one of which won an O. Henry Award\, as he worked for a small Bay Area UX firm. He got accepted to the Iowa Writers' Workshop the same week he was laid off in 2010. \n\nAt Iowa he finished most of a draft of his debut novel *Private Citizens*\, which was called \"the first great Millennial novel\" by *New York Magazine* after its publication in 2016\, and received a Whiting Writers' Award. In 2017 he founded CRIT\, an independent class he teaches out of his apartment in Brooklyn\, whose alumni have gone on to publish 34 books to date. He has written for *The Paris Review\, N+1\, The New York Times\, The New Republic\, The Believer\, Playboy\, The Nation\,* and others. \n\nTony's second book is a novel-in-stories\, *Rejection*\, published in 2024. *Rejection* has been translated into seven languages\, and was nominated for the National Book Award\, the Story Prize\, and the Clark Prize\, and received a Jack Galef Literary Arts award. Times* Book Prize. She is also the author of the chaplet *Unless* (Belladonna*\, 2019)\, which received the 2019 Kate Tufts Discovery Award and the Colorado Book Award. Her video work has recently been exhibited at the Miller Institute for Contemporary Art. Nguyen is a Kundiman fellow and member of the Vietnamese artist collective She Who Has No Master(s). Horn’s first book\, *VOICE OF THE FISH: A LYRIC ESSAY*\, won the 2020 Graywolf Nonfiction Prize\, the 2023 Great Lakes Colleges Association New Writers Award\, and was named an Honor Book for the 2023 Stonewall Israel Fishman Nonfiction Book Award as well as an American Booksellers Association Indies Introduce Selection. Footnote Press acquired *VOICE OF THE FISH* for UK release in September 2022. In 2016\, Horn translated the volume Ateliers & Studios for the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. The recipient of the Tin House Without Borders Residency and fellowships from the Sewanee Writers’ Conference\, the Kenyon Writers Workshops\, and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts\, Horn’s writing has appeared in *Granta\, the Virginia Quarterly Review\, the **Kenyon Review\, Poets & Writers\, The Rumpus\, Literary Hub*\, and elsewhere. \n\nInitially specialising in Phenomenology and Visual Arts scholarship\, he holds MAs from the University of Edinburgh\, the École normale supérieure\, Paris\, and Concordia University\, Montreal as well as an MFA from Randolph College. He lives in New York and teaches at Columbia University.

She is the author of fourteen published works\, including a cycle of novels about the city-state Ravicka and its inhabitants\, *the Ravickians—Event Factory* (2010)\, *The Ravickians* (2011)\, *Ana Patova Crosses a Bridge* (2013) and *Houses of Ravicka* (2017)—as well as three collections of drawings: Prose Architectures (2017)\, One Long Black Sentence\, a series of white ink drawings on black paper\, indexed by Fred Moten (2020)\, and Plans for Sentences (2022). Recent essays and visual work have appeared in *POETRY Magazine\, The Paris Review\, Gulf Coast\, Granta\, Harper's\, BOMB magazine\, e-flux and n+1*. She has been awarded fellowships\, artist grants\, and residencies from the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard\, Foundation for Contemporary Arts\, the Lannan Foundation\, and KW Institute for Contemporary Art (Berlin)\, and is a 2021 Windham-Campbell Prize winner in fiction. Seats are offered on a first come\, first served basis\; please arrive early to secure a spot.\n\nCAConrad has been writing poems for more than 50 years and working with (Soma) tic poetry rituals for over 20 years. Their latest book is *Listen to the Golden Boomerang Return* (Wave Books / UK Penguin 2024). They received the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize\, a PEN award\, a Creative Capital grant\, a Pew Fellowship\, and a Lambda Literary Award. *The Book of Frank* is available in 9 different languages\, most recently French and Italian. They also exhibit poems as sculpture with recent shows in London\, Hamburg\, Melbourne\, Porto\, Santander\, and Tucson. They teach at the Sandberg Art Institute and De Ateliers in Amsterdam.\n\nFor any questions about the event or to share accommodation needs\, please email zvwseries@umich.edu--we are eager to help ensure this event is inclusive to you.
