They play a crucial role in helping us understand the nation’s complex past. This December\, Lonnie G. Bunch III will step down after seven years as Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. Join us for one of his last public conversations in the role\, a dynamic exchange with Lynette Clemetson\, Director of Wallace House Center for Journalists\, on the significance of the 250th anniversary of the United States. At a moment in which discussions about our shared past and collective future feel especially urgent\, this is a rare chance to hear a leader reflect on a career devoted to informing and inspiring Americans to strive for the public good. \n\nQ & A will follow and copies of Secretary Bunch's book *A Fool's Errand: Creating the National Museum of African American History and Culture in the Age of Bush\, Obama\, and Trump* will be available for purchase. \n\nParking is available at the Thayer Parking Structure\, 216 S. Thayer\, at the standard charge of $10/vehicle.\n\nLonnie G. Bunch III is the 14th Secretary of the Smithsonian. He assumed his position June 16\, 2019. As Secretary\, he oversees 21 museums\, 21 libraries\, the National Zoo\, numerous research centers\, and several education units and centers. Two new museums—the National Museum of the American Latino and the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum—are in development. Bunch was the founding director of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture. Bunch chronicled the creation of the museum in his book\, *A Fool’s Errand: Creating the National Museum of African American History and Culture in the Age of Bush\, Obama\, and Trump*\, and is the first historian to be Secretary of the Institution. Since 2024\, Bunch has been Honorary Professor of Practice at Queen’s University Belfast. A member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences\, Bunch received France’s highest award\, The Legion of Honor\, in 2021.\n\nLynette Clemetson is Director of Wallace House Center for Journalists\, home of the Knight-Wallace Fellowships for Journalists and the Livingston Awards for Young Journalists at the University of Michigan. She came to the university from NPR where she was Senior Director of Strategy and Content Initiatives\, developing and guiding projects across broadcast\, digital and events to develop new audiences. Her career in journalism spans newspapers\, magazines and audio across a range of platforms. As a reporter\, she was a Washington-based correspondent for *The New York Times *and *Newsweek*\, writing about politics\, social issues and demographic change. Prior to her domestic correspondent work\, she was an international correspondent for *Newsweek *based in Hong Kong\, where she covered the former British colony’s return to Chinese rule in 1997. She moved into digital strategy and leadership in 2008 as the founding managing editor of TheRoot.com\, launched for The Washington Post Company with Henry Louis Gates Jr. She is also the former Director of Content Strategy at Pew Center on the States.\n\n*This 2026 Marc and Constance Jacobson Lecture is presented by the Institute for the Humanities in partnership with Wallace House Center for Journalists. DESCRIPTION:Join us for *Film Sampler*\, a series of film screenings focused on themes of protest and resistance.\n\nWatch a screening of *The Janes *(2022\, 101 min)\, followed by a talk back with director Emma Pildes and Professor Sara McCelland.\n\nDuring the five years before the Roe v. Wade ruling –– a time when abortion was a crime in most states and even circulating information about abortion was a felony in Illinois –– the Janes provided low-cost and free abortions to an estimated 11\,000 women. *The Janes* offers first-hand accounts from the women at the center of the group\, many speaking on the record for the first time.\n\nThese screenings are free and open to the public\, no registration or ticket required.\n\n*Film Sampler*\, organized in partnership with the U-M Department of Film\, Television\, and Media (FTVM)\, is offered in conjunction with the UMMA exhibition American Sampler: Activating the Archive.

Seats are offered on a first come\, first served basis\; please arrive early to secure a spot.\n\nTony Tulathimutte is the author of *Private Citizens* and *Rejection*. A graduate of Stanford University's Symbolic Systems program\, he took creative writing classes with Adam Johnson\, ZZ Packer\, and Elizabeth Tallent. After graduating\, he published a handful of stories\, one of which won an O. Henry Award\, as he worked for a small Bay Area UX firm. He got accepted to the Iowa Writers' Workshop the same week he was laid off in 2010. \n\nAt Iowa he finished most of a draft of his debut novel *Private Citizens*\, which was called \"the first great Millennial novel\" by *New York Magazine* after its publication in 2016\, and received a Whiting Writers' Award. In 2017 he founded CRIT\, an independent class he teaches out of his apartment in Brooklyn\, whose alumni have gone on to publish 34 books to date. He has written for *The Paris Review\, N+1\, The New York Times\, The New Republic\, The Believer\, Playboy\, The Nation\,* and others. \n\nTony's second book is a novel-in-stories\, *Rejection*\, published in 2024. *Rejection* has been translated into seven languages\, and was nominated for the National Book Award\, the Story Prize\, and the Clark Prize\, and received a Jack Galef Literary Arts award. Times* Book Prize. She is also the author of the chaplet *Unless* (Belladonna*\, 2019)\, which received the 2019 Kate Tufts Discovery Award and the Colorado Book Award. Her video work has recently been exhibited at the Miller Institute for Contemporary Art. Nguyen is a Kundiman fellow and member of the Vietnamese artist collective She Who Has No Master(s). They will use images to model dialogue techniques that faculty and staff can use with classes and colleagues. These approaches unlock sticky topics and personal details. Horn’s first book\, *VOICE OF THE FISH: A LYRIC ESSAY*\, won the 2020 Graywolf Nonfiction Prize\, the 2023 Great Lakes Colleges Association New Writers Award\, and was named an Honor Book for the 2023 Stonewall Israel Fishman Nonfiction Book Award as well as an American Booksellers Association Indies Introduce Selection. Footnote Press acquired *VOICE OF THE FISH* for UK release in September 2022. In 2016\, Horn translated the volume Ateliers & Studios for the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. The recipient of the Tin House Without Borders Residency and fellowships from the Sewanee Writers’ Conference\, the Kenyon Writers Workshops\, and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts\, Horn’s writing has appeared in *Granta\, the Virginia Quarterly Review\, the **Kenyon Review\, Poets & Writers\, The Rumpus\, Literary Hub*\, and elsewhere. \n\nInitially specialising in Phenomenology and Visual Arts scholarship\, he holds MAs from the University of Edinburgh\, the École normale supérieure\, Paris\, and Concordia University\, Montreal as well as an MFA from Randolph College. He lives in New York and teaches at Columbia University.

Seats are offered on a first come\, first served basis\; please arrive early to secure a spot.\n\nRenee Gladman is a writer and artist preoccupied with crossings\, thresholds\, and geographies as they play out at the intersections of writing\, drawing and architecture. She is the author of numerous books\, including a cycle of novels about the city-state Ravicka and its inhabitants\, the Ravickians\, as well as three collections of drawings\, *Prose Architectures* (2017)\, *One Long Black Sentence* (2020)\, and *Plans for Sentences* (2022). *Theory for Moving Houses*\, a three-part essay on line\, sentences\, color\, and consciousness\, was published in 2026. Recent essays and visual work have appeared in *The Architectural Review*\, POETRY\, *The Paris Review*\, *The Yale Review*\, and *e-flux*\, in addition to several artist monographs and exhibition catalogs. Since 2017\, Gladman has exhibited her works on paper in galleries in the U.S. and across Europe. She has been awarded fellowships and artist residencies from the Menil Drawing Institute\, Harvard Radcliffe Institute\, Foundation for Contemporary Arts\, among others\, and received a Windham-Campbell prize in fiction in 2021. Her first novel\, *Godshot*\, was longlisted for The Center For Fiction’s First Novel Prize and named a Barnes & Noble Pick of the Month. Her story collection\, *Heartbroke* won the California Book Award and was a *New York Times* Best Book of the year. Her writing has been anthologized in *Notes to New Mothers*\, and has appeared in *The Paris Review Daily\, McSweeney’s\, Marie Claire UK\, People\, The Cut\, Wall Street Journal\, No Tokens*\, and others. Gender-inclusive restrooms are available on the second floor of the Museum\, accessible via the stairs\, or in nearby Hatcher Graduate Library (Floors 3\, 4\, 5\, and 6). The Hatcher Library also offers a reflection room (4th Floor South Stacks)\, and a lactation room (Room 13W\, an anteroom to the basement women's staff restroom\, or Room 108B\, an anteroom of the first floor women's restroom). ASL interpreters and CART services at in-person events are available upon request\; please email zvwseries@umich.edu at least two weeks prior to the event\, whenever possible\, to allow time to arrange services.\n\nU-M employees with a U-M parking permit may use the Church Street Parking Structure (525 Church St.\, Ann Arbor) or the Thompson Parking Structure (500 Thompson St.\, Ann Arbor).\nFor Public Parking: The Maynard Street Public Parking Structure (324 Maynard St.\, Ann Arbor) or The Forest Avenue Public Parking Structure (650 South Forest Ave.\, Ann Arbor).
