"description":"Rackham Graduate School is excited to announce a new opportunity to gain practical skills for engaging across differences within our research and professional communities, including real-world examples from U-M alumni.\n\nThe Research Leadership in a Global Context certificate program is an eight-week professional development program that prepares graduate students and postdoctoral scholars to lead research with clarity, confidence, and cultural awareness. Designed for scholars working in increasingly global, interdisciplinary, and collaborative environments, the program integrates leadership development, intercultural understanding, project management, and ethical research practices.\n\nParticipants build concrete skills for leading teams, navigating complex research settings, and preparing for diverse career paths within and beyond academia. By pairing weekly workshops with peer feedback groups and individualized feedback through the Cultural Intelligence (CQ) framework and the Michigan Model of Leadership (MMoL), the certificate creates a supportive environment for reflection, growth, and practical skill-building.\n\nLearning Objectives:\n\nLeadership: Cultivate the ability to lead research with effective communication and strategic decision-making.\n\nCareer Management: Develop personalized career strategies as graduate scholars to prepare for professional paths both within and beyond academia.\n\nSocial Responsibility: Build knowledge and critical thinking skills to address local, national, and global challenges in research and professional environments.\n\nIntercultural Understanding: Enhance cross-cultural collaboration skills by understanding and respecting cultural differences in your scholarship, including research, teaching, and service.\n\nEngaging Across Differences: Foster research environments that recognize and thoughtfully engage multiple viewpoints.\n\nPlease note: You are required to attend an information session to apply for the Research Leadership in a Global Context certificate program.\n\nReach out to rackhamcert@umich.edu with any questions regarding the certificate. Please contact with rackhampdeworkshops@umich.edu with any registration questions.",

It also meets the needs of those applying for internships, including those applying to the Rackham Doctoral Intern Fellowship Program. This workshop is a hands-on opportunity for graduate students to learn how to effectively develop a resume using the foundation that they have laid with information from their CVs. Additionally, this session will include tips for writing compelling, tailored cover letters, and thinking strategically about how these two documents complement each other.\n\nThis workshop is designed for master's students, doctoral students, and postdoctoral fellows. Do you dread others evaluating your work or avoid opportunities for critical feedback? Do you have trouble accepting praise or acknowledging your accomplishments? Do you worry about being exposed as an academic fraud? Have you ever questioned whether you belong at Michigan? Thoughts such as these are hallmarks of impostor thinking and are more common among graduate students than you realize. However, they don't have to overshadow your academic and professional journey.\nJoin us for this interactive, two-hour workshop, during which we will share insights from impostorism scholarship and provide research-based strategies for combating your impostor thoughts and feelings.\nBy the end of this workshop, you will be able to:Define impostorism and highlight the variety of ways individuals and groups are most impacted.Discuss individual, system, and institution level factors that contribute to impostorism.Recognize maladaptive thought patterns and coping strategies that exacerbate impostor experiences.Access tools and strategies to help interrupt your impostor cycle (all participants will receive a digital strategies workbook).\nThis workshop is designed for doctoral students. "description":"As the country heads into the 2026 midterm elections, the University of Michigan welcomes journalist Osita Nwanevu, contributing editor at The New Republic and columnist at The Guardian, for a public conversation with Elizabeth Anderson, the John Dewey Distinguished University Professor of Philosophy.\n\nThe evening centers on Nwanevu's new book, The Right of the People: Democracy and the Case for a New American Founding, which argues that America's democratic troubles run deeper than any single election. The real problem, Nwanevu contends, lies in institutions that were never designed to let majorities govern, and in an economy that keeps power far from ordinary people.\n\nAnderson, one of the country's most influential political philosophers, brings her own work on democracy, equality, and the workplace to the exchange. Together they take up the questions this election season keeps surfacing. Who really holds power in America? Why do so many people feel unheard, and what would it take to build a democracy worthy of the name?\n\nThe conversation is free and open to students, faculty, and the broader Ann Arbor community, with time for audience questions.\n\nSchedule\n\nFriday, October 9, 2026 at Ross School of Business, Room TBD\n\n5:30 pm Doors open, light refreshments and Literati book sales in the lobby.\n6:00 pm The program begins, including questions and answers at the end. \n7:30 pm Refreshments and book signing \/ sales in the lobby until 8:00 pm.\n\n\nSponsors and Partners\n\nU-M Department of Philosophy; Energy Club at Ross; Rackham Graduate School; Poverty Solutions; Business+Impact at Ross; Wallace House; Institute for the Humanities; U-M Department of History; U-M Department of English Language & Literature; Ford School of Public Policy; Center for Positive Organizations; Center for Political Studies; U-M Department of Political Science; Michigan Law; the Philosophy, Politics, and Economics Program; Science, Technology & Society; Science, Technology & Public Policy at the Ford School; the Erb Institute; Net Impact; and U-M Department of Sociology.",

This workshop introduces algorithmic awareness as a vital skill for modern scholars. You will examine case studies like the COMPAS system to understand how code reinforces social inequality. We provide specific tools to help you identify factual errors and AI \"hallucinations\" in your output. Participants learn to value human perspectives over machine-generated summaries to ensure inclusive research practices. This session serves incoming graduate students looking to build an ethical foundation for their academic careers.\n\nThis workshop is designed with doctoral students and postdocs in mind.
