In this talk I will highlight recent work demonstrating how a migratory life history strategy can influence trait evolution among populations and across clades spanning the fish tree of life. We find that N increases linearly with the number of variable sites in empirical fitness landscapes, regardless of prior adaptation in another environment. Extrapolation suggests a minimal N of 10\u2075 for typical prokaryotes and 10\u2077 for mammals. In contrast, in highly rugged shuffled landscapes, N is markedly reduced, while fitness gains also shrink. The relatively smooth empirical landscapes therefore enable greater fitness gains while lengthening adaptive walks, rendering even local fitness peaks effectively unreachable because natural environments inevitably change. These results explain the persistence of fitness gains in long-term evolution experiments under constant environments and the widespread occurrence of beneficial mutations across species. We ask questions about how microbes respond to stressors like climate change, particularly drought and floods, and land use change like agricultural intensification. How microbes respond can affect a myriad of ecosystem services, including soil fertility and crop growth, and biogeochemical cycles. In this talk I highlight studies in our lab that span microscopic to global. First, I'll talk about how (and whether) we can generalize microbial responses to a global change, like drought. We used a network of rainout shelters to ask whether there were taxonomic or trait-based shifts in microbes under drought, worldwide. We also extend this work to thinking about how microbes interact with plants to buffer plants under drought. Second, I'll talk about a project investigating bacteria that fix nitrogen, and how they interact with both the plant and other organisms in the soil, like fungi. We hypothesized that bacterial-fungal interactions increased nitrogen fixation, benefitting the plant, and potentially reducing reliance on nitrogen fertilizers. There are now more than 35 recognized species of North American field cricket and perhaps many more cryptic undescribed species. With a landmark paper in 1979 titled \u201cSpeciation in North American Field Crickets\u201d, Richard Harrison launched decades of classic studies focused on a single hybrid zone between two closely related species of North American field cricket. In this seminar, I will revisit hypotheses laid out in the classic paper and describe ongoing work to resolve the phylogenetic relationships among North American Gryllus and identify new hybrid zones in this species complex.
