SUMMARY:Performance:Harold Haugh Award Recital: Danielle Belen\, violin
DESCRIPTION:Danielle Belen\, professor in the Department of Strings\, is the recipient of the 2025 Harold Haugh Award for excellence in studio teaching. This award is named in honor of Haugh\, former professor of music and leading oratorio soloist. Belen has an extraordinary record of student success and in the spirit of this award\, her musical program will celebrate the shared joy of artistry\, performance\, and pedagogy. Free and open to the public.\n\nDREAMING IN DOUBLE STOPS\n\nThe title of this lecture recital reflects Professor Belen’s passionate dedication to the intersection of violin technique and elite musicianship through teaching and research. Double stops are a foundational violin technique in which two strings are bowed simultaneously\, creating a rich resonance and blend of sound. While technically demanding\, they can unlock freedom on the instrument and enable the highest levels of intonation and expression.\n\nEtudes and exercises focused on double stops have existed for centuries\, and etude collections from the 1800’s remain central to violin pedagogy today. This raises an intriguing question: could there be a new etude book written in the compositional language of our time?\n\nThe centerpiece of this evening will be the presentation of a multi-phase collaborative etude project between Professor Belen\, her studio of SMTD violinists\, and Grammy Award–winning composer Jessie Montgomery. Through performances and discussion of the creative process behind these works\, the project explores what modern technical studies might look – and sound – like today.\n\nFACULTY BIO\n\nProfessor of Violin at the University of Michigan School of Music\, Theatre & Dance in Ann Arbor\, DANIELLE BELEN is already making a name for herself as a seasoned pedagogue with a strong studio of young artists. Her students have won major prizes in national and international competitions including the Menuhin\, Stulberg and Klein competitions\, as well as being accepted into major conservatories and universities. Alumni from her studio play in symphonies across the country\, including the Colorado\, Cincinnati\, Detroit and San Francisco Symphonies\, the LA Opera and San Francisco Ballet Orchestras\, and internationally in Norway and Finland. \n\nWinner of the 2008 Sphinx Competition\, Ms. Belen has appeared as a soloist with the Pittsburgh\, Atlanta\, Nashville and San Francisco Symphonies\, the Boston Pops\, and the Florida and Cleveland Orchestras. Zachary Lewis from the Cleveland *Plain Dealer* wrote \"Violinist Danielle Belen... captivated every ear with an assured\, impassioned performance of Ravel's 'Tzigane\,' knocking off the daunting showpiece as if it were a trifle.\"\n\nMs. Belen released her debut Naxos recording of works by living composer Lawrence Dillon in 2009 to much acclaim. Soon after\, she commissioned \"Multiplicity\"\, a piece by Dillon for six virtuoso violins which she premiered along with her students.\n\nA graduate of the USC Thornton School of Music and the Colburn Conservatory in Los Angeles\, Ms. Belen joined the faculty of the Colburn School in 2008. In addition to maintaining her own violin studio\, she was the teaching assistant to renowned pedagogue Robert Lipsett. During that time\, Ms. Belen also served as the Director of the Ed and Mari Chamber Music Institute at the Colburn School of Performing Arts. \n\nIn 2010\, Ms. Belen founded Center Stage Strings\, a summer camp and performance festival for gifted young musicians in central California. After gaining national attention\, CSS moved to the campus of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor as part of MPulse\, a summer program at the School of Music\, Theatre & Dance. As the Artistic Director and head of the violin faculty\, she has attracted students and seasoned artists from around the world. Lynn Harrell\, James Ehnes\, Arnold Steinhardt\, Sarah Chang\, William Hagen\, Rohan de Silva and Stefan Jackiw have joined to perform in support of the program.\n\nAs the winner of the 2014 Sphinx Medal of Excellence\, Ms. Belen performed for Justice Sonia Sotomayor and her guests at the Supreme Court in Washington DC\, where she was awarded a $50\,000 career grant. In turn\, she used that money towards a matching campaign for Center Stage Strings\, doubling the amount into $100\,000 for student scholarships.\n\nHer passion for pedagogy can be seen in her vibrant and unique teaching style\, made accessible through a host of videos available to the public through her YouTube Channel and Social Media. Ms. Belen plays on a violin made in Mantua\, Italy by Stefano Scarampella.

SUMMARY:Performance:\"Re:Frame\" – Dance BFA Concert
DESCRIPTION:*This event is sold out. Limited tickets may be available at the door at 7:15 pm.*\n\nThe Department of Dance presents *Re:Frame* with choreography by senior Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance majors Emerson Forbes\, Irene Kim\, Julia Lepore\, Ava Menzel\, Ladina Schaller\, and Jessica Serres. \n\n*Film Is a Dream Realized*\, choreographed by Emerson Forbes\, is rooted in the contemporary fusion dance style and vintage Hollywood cinema – and inspired by her great grandfather\, a famous composer for classic films. This piece explores how cinematic elegance can be brought to life through the integration of live dance and projected film elements within a stylized black and white aesthetic. The choreography aims to create a richly textured atmosphere that echoes the expressive energy and timeless sophistication of classic movies. \n\n*decode & ENCRYPT*\, choreographed by Irene Kim\, is inspired by 2016 robotic installation “Can’t Help Myself” by Sun Yuan and Peng Yu and investigates the raw and visceral human toll of living in a high-pressure society. This piece offers the audience the opportunity to witness the quiet “bleeding out” of the personal self that results from the pressure to always be optimized\, to always perform\, to always keep up the appearance of being the best versions of ourselves. \n\n*Flipping Through the Pages*\, choreographed by Julia Lepore\, is a movement trailer based on a self-published novel she wrote titled *Different Fonts*. These two works of art encapsulate the psychology behind dance through fictional characters and an audacious storyline. In watching this piece\, you are immersed in a live action replication of the movement behind the words written on this novel’s pages. Beyond the 10 minutes of performing\, and the 400+ pages of writing\, there is still so much left unwritten…\n\n*Of Something I Left Behind*\, choreographed by Ava Menzel\, investigates time as something felt rather than measured. Through contemporary-based movement\, the work explores themes of remembering\, forgetting\, distortion as time moves forward\, and how nostalgia can feel both comforting and deeply unsettling.\n\n*Who’s there?!*\, choreographed by Ladina Schaller\, serves as a glimpse into a work performed at Nichols Arboretum on April 18\, where on a walk through the forest the audience will encounter fragments of personalities\, whispers of old stories and a world of unanswered questions. Local artists and friends are chipping in to create this world via dance\, live music\, acting and puppetry. \n\n*Pulsafuerte*\, choreographed by Jessica Serres\, explores the consequences of cultural clashing in a place it was unexpected to form. She explores how conflict and presence have an effect on the meshing of ideas and the creation of community.

SUMMARY:Performance:\"Threshold\" – Dance BFA Concert
DESCRIPTION:*This event is sold out. Limited tickets may be available at the door at 7:15 pm.*\n\nThe Department of Dance presents *Threshold*\, a collection of five works choreographed and directed by senior Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance majors Zamora Tamminga\, Sarah Snow\, Melisa Orduna\, Mia Brooks\, and Zeenia Shahpurwala. \n\n*Something has come undone* (Tamminga) is a series of vignettes of interpersonal relationships\, highlighting jazz music as a vessel for spontaneity\, resistance\, and connectivity. This theatrical work is set in a jazz bar\, where one’s intimate moments become deceptively public\, and where trying to forget may not be enough. \n\nDrawing from family dynamics\, sisterhood\, and early experiences of navigating unfamiliar emotions\, *Strangers Again* (Snow) examines how people carry\, suppress\, or redirect feelings\, and how those patterns manifest in the physical body. The dancers move through states of physical closeness and emotional distance\, tracing cycles of withdrawal\, fatigue\, and collective support. \n\n「三⾯鏡」*Sanmenkyou* (Brooks) is a triptych following three relational “faces”: the face shown to self\, the one to society\, and the face presented to the world through digital platforms\; where authenticity\, performance\, and global visibility coexist. Fundamentally based on the Japanese concepts of *honne* (true feelings) and *tatemae* (public façade)\, the conditions this describes are familiar to many multi-ethnic individuals navigating multiple cultural frameworks. \n\n*El Final* (Orduna) is rooted in the intensity of pivotal moments shaped by closure. The work explores the end of a chapter as it unfolds with heightened emotion and deep nostalgia. Through climactic\, tango-like scores and orchestral textures\, the dance’s journey traces the arc of longing and finality. Impermanence is the catalyst to growth\, unveiling the possibilities within every conclusion. \n\n*Ephemeral River* (Shahpurwala) explores the joy and silly little feeling dance brings when experienced onstage. Inviting the audience into a vibrant world shaped by play and genuine enjoyment\, the piece celebrates dance as a space for freedom\, humor\, and shared pleasure. The work invites performers and audiences alike to share in the simple joy of connection and moving together.

SUMMARY:Performance:Victors of Character: A Story of Loyalty\, Integrity\, and the Courage to Make a Difference
DESCRIPTION:This fall\, Department of Theatre & Drama assistant professor Shavonne Coleman and a troupe of SMTD theatre & drama students are touring *Victors of Character*\, written by Allison Manville Metz\, to elementary and middle schools throughout the area. Audiences are invited to join Coleman and the company for a single public performance on North Campus.\n\n*Victors of Character: A Story of Loyalty\, Integrity\, and the Courage to Make a Difference* is adapted for the stage based on the 2016 documentary *Black and Blue* by Brian Kruger and Buddy Moorehouse. The play tells the story of the 1934 game between University of Michigan and Georgia Institute of Technology. The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets agreed to play in Ann Arbor that season on the condition that the Wolverines could not play Willis Ward\, the team's only African-American player. \"Many of Ward's teammates were outraged when athletic officials at the University of Michigan agreed to the demand\,\" said Metz. \"The most outraged Wolverine was Ward's roommate\, a lineman from Grand Rapids named Gerald Ford.\" What does it mean to do the right thing when you feel the system around you is wrong?\n\nPerfect for families\, *Victors of Character* has a running time of about 35 minutes with a 15 minute talkback immediately following.

SUMMARY:Performance:\"ENTRY POINTS\" - Graduate Dance Performance Concert
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Dance presents ENTRY POINTS\, a graduate dance concert featuring four choreographers exploring vulnerability\, presence\, and embodied inquiry in diverse contemporary dance practices. The evening showcases the unique voices of Kiana “KC” Cook\, Ginny Jiang\, Olga Rabetskaya\, and Kei (Kate) Tsuruharatani\, each presenting works that investigate the relationship between performer\, audience\, and environment. From the quiet\, meditative listening of *An Invitation to the Small Dance Party*\, to the dreamlike duality of *Insomnia*\, the philosophical inquiry of Jiang’s solo work\, and Cook’s socially rooted\, improvisational group choreography\, the concert invites audiences into immersive experiences where movement\, attention\, and relationality take center stage.\n\nAn interactive pre-performance event will begin at 7:00 pm\, with the theatre opening to audiences at 7:15 pm.

SUMMARY:Performance:University Symphony Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Kenneth Kiesler\, conductor\n\nPROGRAM\n*Preamble: An introduction to Mahler’s Sixth*\nwith Kenneth Kiesler\, Esther Van Zyl (as Alma Mahler)\, and Joseph Horowitz (as Gustav)\n- *intermission* -\nMahler Symphony No. 6\n\nPlease join us for the final concert of the GRAMMY-winning University Symphony Orchestra’s 2025-2026 season. Following its recent performance of “The Jungle” by Wynton Marsalis with Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra\, a concert of seven World Premieres\, and a performance of the Verdi Requiem with University Choirs and soloists\, this culminating concert features Gustav Mahler’s Sixth Symphony\, known as “The Tragic.” With its brilliant marches\, lyrical Andante – some of the most beautiful music he ever wrote – and other-worldly finale\, famous for its hammer-blows of fate\, Mahler’s Sixth speaks of the composer’s dark inner life and intuition about his future.\n\nThe concert will begin with *Preamble: An introduction to Mahler’s Sixth*\, hosted by Kenneth Kiesler\, with musical excerpts played by the USO\, and performances by Esther Van Zyl as Alma Mahler\, and Joseph Horowitz as Gustav. The preamble will explore Mahler’s Sixth in the context of his life and times – and its pertinence right now.\n\nSpecial guest Joseph Horowitz gives the pre-concert lecture\, \"Leonard Bernstein's Mahler: The Art of Advocacy\" in the Hill Lower Lobby. (Please note the 7:00 starting time)\n\n*The residency of Joseph Horowitz is made possible\, in part\, by grants from the U-M Arts Initiative and the Sally Fleming Master Class Fund.*\n\nJoseph Horowitz is an award-winning author\, concert producer\, filmmaker\, and broadcaster. SUMMARY:Performance:“ANOMALY” - Dance BFA Concert
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Dance presents *ANOMALY*\, a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance concert with original choreography by Anna Bodescu and Ame Vidrio\, in collaboration with U-M alumni and undergraduate dance students. \n\nTickets are free and will be available via Eventbrite. The house will open at 7:00pm.\n\n*A Slippery Subject*\, choreographed by Anna Bodescu in collaboration with dancers\, addresses how we continue to rebuild and rebuild and rebuild the landscape that we call reality. Our time is spent\, earned\, lost\, frozen\, stretched\, and taken from us. This work investigates how and what we adapt in order to survive. In what ways is resilience beaten into our bodies? Drawing inspiration from the anecdotes and experiences from those far\, near and dear\, this piece unfolds as a nonlinear progression of universal underpinnings. \n\n*Eroding Landscapes*\, choreographed by Ame Vidrio in collaboration with dancers\, explores identity across past\, present\, and future states through four interconnected themes: ancestral connections\, bonds\, erosion\, and rebirth. Each theme examines both the transformation and stagnation of the self. These concepts are supported through both physical and symbolic materials. Raw elements such as dirt\, rope\, and wood intersect with manufactured objects like wire\, heels\, and contact microphones\, all on stage\, guiding the viewer toward layered interpretations of control\, decay\, lineage\, and self-determination.

SUMMARY:Performance:The Marriage: The Mahlers in New York
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Jack Tamburri\nEsther van Zyl as Alma\nJoseph Horowitz as Gustav\n\n*Ninety minutes without intermission. There will also be a post-performance discussion.*\n\nGustav and Alma Mahler arrived in New York City in 1907. He had been invited to lead the Metropolitan Opera\; his glamorous wife accompanied him to the New World. His embattled American career places their legendary marriage in sharp relief. Nineteen years Gustav’s junior\, Alma was his constant companion and occasional soul-mate\, sometimes his muse\, always his caretaker\, a woman otherwise restless and unfulfilled. Her husband’s life was intensely interior\, sporadically alert to others’ needs and desires.\n\nHorowitz writes: “My play is based on my 2023 novel with the same name. Its central event is Alma’s affair with Walter Gropius and her wrenching decision to remain with Mahler. As *The Marriage* illuminates\, there are things to be learned about Gustav and Alma that cannot as readily be observed in Vienna or Budapest as in Manhattan. Mahler was a great personality and\, when circumstances permitted\, a great man. He arrived in America weakened and fatigued. His energy and idealism were aroused by the New World\, but fitfully – he remained a chronic outsider.”\n\nABOUT THE GUEST ARTIST\n\nJOSEPH HOROWITZ is an award-winning author\, concert producer\, film-maker\, and broadcaster. He is one of the most prominent and widely published writers on topics in American music. As an orchestral administrator and advisor\, he has been a pioneering force in the development of thematic programming and new concert formats. Horowitz’s most recent books include a novel\, *The Marriage: The Mahlers in New York*\, about which Clive Paget wrote in *Musical America*: “With his unparalleled knowledge of fin-de-siècle classical music in America\, Joseph Horowitz [has] brought us closer to Mahler and his wife Alma than any other author I have read. . . . At times\, your heart breaks for them both. . . . In Gustav and Alma Mahler\, Horowitz has created two of classical music’s most convincing fictional portraits.” Another Horowitz book\, *Dvorak’s Prophecy and the Vexed Fate of Black Classical Music*\, tells a story that “must be heard if classical music is to contribute to the national discussion on racial justice” (according to Mark Clague of the University of Michigan). A former *New York Times* music critic\, and Executive Director of the Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra\, Horowitz works as an artistic consultant for orchestras throughout the US\, and also regularly produces 50-minute “More than Music” documentaries for National Public Radio.

SUMMARY:Performance:2 X 2 - dance\, storytelling and genre-defying performance
DESCRIPTION:Amy Chavasse (faculty\, Dance)\, Malcolm Tulip (faculty\, Theatre & Drama)\, and Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance major\, Anna Bodescu join together for an evening of storytelling\, movement\, and dance. Careening from acts boisterous and absurd to tributes reverent and tender\, the three works promise an unflinching examination of the human condition.\n\nPROGRAM\n\n*Little Charlotte the Round Ray* (premiered at the Disguise Festival\, Northampton\, MA\, May 2025)\n\nA cautionary tale\, told as speculative fiction in kaleidoscopic movement\, song and storytelling. It examines the desperation that can emerge from belief systems that elevate hysteria\, and wishful thinking. At its core\, this is a heartfelt homage to Charlotte.\n\n*Low Light* (premiered at the Beijing Dance Festival\, 2014)\n\nIn 1956\, Rachel Carson wrote a script for the popular TV show *Omnibus* called *Something About the Sky*. She hoped to challenge the \"sterile preoccupation with things artificial\" and question our \"alienation from our source of strength.” Our absolute and essential humanness calls out for a re-imagined vocabulary of encounters. This dance seeks to uncover how this looks and feels across an expanse of emotional latitude – the imaginary line that connects points across the surface of the earth. Geographical imagery provides a framework as the dancer moves inside a quivering\, episodic narrative.\n\n*deux dogtooth* (premiered at the Arthur Miller Theatre\, 2017)\n\nA duet for Tulip and Chavasse that uses misappropriation and agitprop in a tightly structured improvisation that relies on intricately timed textural layering\, gestures and humor. Obliquely referencing the 2009 film\, *Dogtooth* by Yorgos Lanthimos\, the action unfolds on and around a table\, two chairs and a thick shag rug.
