GUEST ARTIST BIO

Regarded “as among the finest pianists of his generation” (*WholeNote*), DAVID HYUN-SU KIM has been acclaimed as a musician who “rivals Golden Age pianists. [His playing is] brilliant artistry indeed, … nuanced and naturally phrased, clear and poetic… A performer of artistry, integrity, and interest” (*Early Music America*).

Born in upstate New York to Korean immigrants, David’s early interests were in math, philosophy, and chemistry, and he matriculated at Cornell University as a Presidential Research and National Merit Scholar in chemistry. He never seriously considered music until a life-changing encounter with Beethoven’s piano sonatas convinced him to trade the lab stool for the piano bench. He launched himself into music, working at Cornell with Malcolm Bilson and James Webster, before heading to Europe where he made his orchestral debut in Vienna and continued his musical studies in Germany as a Fulbright scholar.

He returned to the United States, earning degrees in music from Harvard, Yale, and the New England Conservatory. These studies overlapped with an increase in his performance activity, and he is now primarily a concert artist. He has performed as a concerto soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician in South Korea, Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Italy, Germany, and the United Kingdom, as well as completing multiple east and west coast tours in North America. A frequent guest artist, he has conducted residencies at Stanford, Bucknell, Indiana-Bloomington, Duke, and Pennsylvania State Universities, the Universities of Utah, Washington, and Wyoming, and Colby and Bowdoin Colleges, as well as serving as guest speaker and performer at the University of Michigan Piano Festival and the University of California-Berkeley’s Piano Institute, and appearances at the Banff, Orvieto, and Norfolk Music festivals.

David is also active as a recording artist. His debut solo CD of Mozart and Beethoven sonatas was recorded on a historically-appropriate Viennese 5-octave piano, and was acclaimed for its “great sensitivity to the music’s rhetoric, [yielding] movements that come across as journeys of discovery” (*Fanfare*). His follow-up project, a much-anticipated all-Schumann album a Viennese 6 1/2-octave piano closely modeled on Schumann’s personal instrument, was heralded as "poetry of the highest order... Schumann for the ages!" (*Skagit Early Keyboard Museum*) and praised as “endlessly fascinating… thanks to Kim’s thoughtful phrasing and 19th-century disregard for strict observance of time… [T]his familiar music yields unexpected depth and a sheer beauty that is unrivaled by performances on modern instruments. Kim’s interpretation is an essential part of our understanding of this composer, the musical world in which he lived, and the joy of experiencing compositions and playing of the highest order” (*ConcertoNet*).

In addition to his performance activities, David is active as a musical thinker and scholar. He has won two international IES research grants, and written articles and chapters on early recordings, musical notation, piano organology, and improvisation. One of his earliest projects argued for a new understanding of hairpin notation, and points to the radically different interpretive practice suggested by the performances of Brahms’ closest students and colleagues. His current musical research centers on interdisciplinary approaches to interpretive process.

A sought-after pedagogue and adjudicator, David has taught at Yale and Harvard Universities. His students have gone on to win prizes in international competitions and been accepted for graduate study at Eastman, Oberlin, the University of Michigan, the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, Indiana University, and similar institutions.

All events are free and open to the public, made possible by the Sally Fleming Master Class Fund. This artist residency is hosted by the Department of Piano and the Stearns Collection of Musical Instruments.

David Kim's Viennese-style Romantic piano is a creation of renowned American piano builder Rodney Regier; it is a cross between features of Graf and Bösendorfer pianos. At this program, students and community pianists can try out and hear music by composers such as Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Chopin, and Brahms to be exposed to this piano's world of musical sounds and touches.

George Takei is a civil rights leader, social media superstar, Grammy-nominated recording artist, New York Times bestselling author, and
pioneering actor. He has appeared in more than 40 feature films and
hundreds of television roles, most famously as Hikaru Sulu in Star Trek.

With an uncanny eloquence and signature wit, Takei shares the story of his family's forced internment as Japanese Americans during WWII — a seemingly forgotten part of American history. He also takes audiences through his rise to celebrity as a Sci-f icon, his remarkable journey as social media mega-power, and his passionate fght for LGBTQ rights and marriage equality in America empowering others to beat the odds and make a difference.

George Takei is known around the world for his role in the acclaimed original TV series Star Trek, in which he played Hikaru Sulu, helmsman of the starship Enterprise. But Takei's story, which includes an acting career that spans six decades, goes where few have gone before. From a childhood spent with his family wrongfully imprisoned in Japanese American internment camps during World War II to becoming one of the country's leading figures in the fight for social justice, LGBTQ+ rights, and marriage equality, Takei remains a powerful voice on issues ranging from politics to pop culture.

Takei hosts the AARP-produced YouTube series Takei's Take, exploring the world of technology, trends, current events, and pop culture, and is the subject of the documentary To Be Takei. On his own YouTube channel, Takei and his husband Brad Takei bring viewers into their personal lives in the "heightened reality" web series It Takeis Two. He was a series regular in the second season of Ridley Scott's anthology drama The Terror: Infamy, which premiered on AMC in August 2019.

His rich baritone has provided narration for the PBS series The National Parks: America's Best Idea, the Peabody Award-winning radio documentary Crossing East, and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, which garnered Takei a Grammy Award nomination for Best Spoken Word Album. He has also done voiceover work for hundreds of video games, commercials, films and TV series such as Fox’s The Simpsons and Futurama; Disney’s Kim Possible, Mulan and Mulan 2; Nickelodeon’s
Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

Takei’s acting credits include co-starring in five Star Trek movies and appearances on such TV series as Fresh Of the Boat, Supah Ninjas, Hawaii Five-0, The New Normal, The Big Bang Theory, Heroes, Psych, Will & Grace, Miami Vice, MacGyver, The Six Million Dollar Man, Mission: Impossible and The Twilight Zone, among numerous others.

In 2015, Takei made his Broadway debut in the musical Allegiance, which was inspired by his true-life experiences during World War II. In 2017, he starred in a revival of Stephen Sondheim's Pacific Overtures in New York City.

Takei is the author of four books, including his autobiography To the Stars. His fifth book, the New York Times bestselling graphic memoir They Called Us Enemy was released in July 2019.

Takei has served as the spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign’s Coming Out Project and was Cultural Affairs Chairman of the Japanese American Citizens League. He is also chairman emeritus and a trustee of the Japanese American National Museum. He was appointed to the Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission by former President Clinton and the government of Japan awarded Takei the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette, for his contribution to U.S.-Japanese relations.

Takei received both bachelor and master of arts degrees from UCLA (’60,’64). In June 2019, Takei received the Distinguished Alumni Award in Theater from the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television (UCLA TFT). Mashable.com named Takei the #1 most influential person on Facebook. He currently boasts more than 10 million Facebook likes and 3 Million Twitter followers – and he uses these platforms to share humor, news, and his take on current events

"bellvoix" World Premiere by Julie Zhu, carillon (April 3, 2024 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/118487 118487-21841134@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, April 3, 2024 12:00pm
Location: Burton Memorial Tower
Organized By: School of Music, Theatre & Dance

*bellvoix* is a site-specific performance at U-M's Burton Memorial Tower. Instead of broadcasting songs, the carillon has a speaking voice. Artist and performer Julie Zhu talks through a convolution of her voice and bell sounds to passersby, surprising them with specific details surveilled from the tower, goading them into conversation.

When a carillon cyborg finally acquires language, what will she say? How might listeners – who don’t have a choice whether to listen – react to the authority of a public musical instrument who necessarily has opinions? *bellvoix* makes obvious the specific social contract between the carillon and the community it serves, woos, or antagonizes. Who is the carillon? And why do we bell?

This world premiere of "bellvoix" (2023) by Julie Zhu, President's Postdoctoral Fellow and Assistant Professor (performing arts technology), is a 30 minute performance. It is co-sponsored by the U-M Arts Initiative and part of the series "XR/XF: Extended Realities/Extended Feminisms" with the Digital Studies Institute.

Anton Chekhov’s *The Cherry Orchard* is considered one of the great classic works of Russian theatre, having been translated into countless languages and produced all over the world. Some of the greatest American playwrights – such as Arthur Miller, David Mamet, and Eugene O’Neill – were directly influenced by Chekhov.

After a prolonged absence following the death of her son, noblewoman Lyobov Ranevskaya returns to her estate and finds the cherry orchard on the estate in full bloom. Despite this outward sign of prosperity, her home is on the verge of financial ruin. Along with her brother, Gaev, Lyobov struggles to maintain the façade of gentility as their world crumbles around them.

Written by Anton Chekhov
Translated by Paul Schmidt
Directed by Daniel Cantor

FUN FACTS: Is *The Cherry Orchard* a comedy or a tragedy? It depends on who you ask. According to artlark.org, “The original intention of Chekhov was for *The Cherry Orchard* to be a comedy; yet, [Constantin] Stanislavsky [famous actor/director and creator of the eponymous Stanislavsky method, known as ‘method acting’] turned it into a tragedy.” Russian literature scholar Svetlana Evdokimova quotes Stanislavsky as saying, “‘This is not a comedy, not a farce, as you wrote; it is a tragedy, whatever outlet for a better life you may have offered in the last act… I hear you saying: “Wait a minute, but this is a farce…” No, for an ordinary person this is a tragedy.’” Yet this conflict is what makes *The Cherry Orchard* such good theatre. As Evdokimova says, “Clearly, the source of the comic lies not in the play’s fabula or situation, not in what happens, but in how it happens and to whom it happens. The enigmatic, captivating, and almost mesmerising effect that *The Cherry Orchard* continues to exert on its audience is to be found in its good-humoured but foolish protagonists – both charming in their gullibility and pathetic in their utter confusion.”

This lecture mines the archive in order to trace the legacies of racial performance and racial and gender violence made manifest in 1935’s *Porgy and Bess*, one of the most famous and influential American operas of all time. By way of archival materials, it interrogates the entanglements of the opera’s architects – DuBose Heyward and George and Ira Gershwin – with the afterlives of slavery. It considers the lasting impact said entanglements have had on the music of *Porgy and Bess* as well as the aesthetic strategies of generations of Black women genius culture workers navigating the Gershwin and Heyward archive.

CREES Noon Lecture. #NotWarsaw: Jews and Culture in the Cities of Polish Lands (April 10, 2024 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/120591 120591-21845004@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, April 10, 2024 12:00pm
Location: Weiser Hall
Organized By: School of Music, Theatre & Dance

This talk presents the book *Polish Jewish Culture Beyond the Capital: Centering the Periphery,* coedited by Halina Goldberg and Nancy Sinkoff, focusing on its historiographic framework. Polish Jewry has been often conceptualized through studies of the metropole, Warsaw, and its assimilating circles, its Jewish press, Jewish politics, and more. Likewise, the history of Jews in Poland in the modern period has also frequently been framed solely as a political narrative. Goldberg and Sinkoff’s approach emphasizes the capaciousness of the concept of Polish lands to accommodate the rootedness of Jews in Polish soil—and its link to the notion of *doikayt* (Yid. lit. hereness or at-homeness)—while at the same time underscoring their regional diversity. It highlights the vitality of Polish Jewish urban culture beyond Warsaw by addressing the production and consumption of culture—including literature, film, cabaret, theater, architecture, the fine arts, and music. It is Polish Jews’ engagement with music, in particular, that serves as a central narrative thread in this presentation.

Halina Goldberg is a professor of musicology and director of the Robert F. Byrnes Russian and East European Institute in the Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies at Indiana University–Bloomington. She is the author of *Music in Chopin’s Warsaw,* editor of a special issue of the *Musical Quarterly* titled *Jewish Spirituality, Modernity, and Historicism in the Long Nineteenth Century: New Musical Perspectives,* and director of the digital project *Jewish Life in Interwar Łódź* https://jewish-lodz.iu.edu.

Undergraduate student Tiara Partsch directs this senior thesis show, a performance of the devised work, *People Are Things*.

Sylvie is a woman like any other. She does not cry when her husband leaves her; in fact, she does not say a word – that is, until she slips a knife in her bag, before heading out to work.

As she navigates presence, absence and their respective boundaries, Sylvie finds herself on the edge of the world: although no one *really* gets hurt, this story deals in all-absorbing violence, the silent kind: the kind which Sylvie finds in every area of her life, her marriage, her house, her employer – an existential violence she attempts (and fails) to contain and define. *People Are Things* is a study of silence. The aura of it; the sound it might long for at night.

Presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre Performance: Directing.

Anton Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard is considered one of the great classic works of Russian theatre, having been translated into countless languages and produced all over the world.

Directed by Daniel Cantor

FUN FACTS: Is The Cherry Orchard a comedy or a tragedy? It depends on who you ask. According to artlark.org, “The original intention of Chekhov was for The Cherry Orchard to be a comedy; yet, [Constantin] Stanislavsky [famous actor/director and creator of the eponymous Stanislavsky method, known as ‘method acting’] turned it into a tragedy.” Russian literature scholar Svetlana Evdokimova quotes Stanislavsky as saying, “‘This is not a comedy, not a farce, as you wrote; it is a tragedy, whatever outlet for a better life you may have offered in the last act… I hear you saying: “Wait a minute, but this is a farce…” No, for an ordinary person this is a tragedy.’” Yet this conflict is what makes The Cherry Orchard such good theatre. As Evdokimova says, “Clearly, the source of the comic lies not in the play’s fabula or situation, not in what happens, but in how it happens and to whom it happens. The enigmatic, captivating, and almost mesmerising effect that The Cherry Orchard continues to exert on its audience is to be found in its good-humoured but foolish protagonists – both charming in their gullibility and pathetic in their utter confusion.”

The University of Michigan’s Baroque Chamber Orchestra studies and performs repertoire from the late Renaissance, Baroque, and the early Classical periods. While directed by faculty members Aaron Berofsky, baroque violin, and Joseph Gascho, harpsichord/organ, many performances are led by the students themselves. Using period instruments and replicas from the university’s growing Stearns Collection, the musicians gain vital hands-on experience and learn about the history and context of early music and performance practice.

Organized By: School of Music, Theatre & Dance

The University of Michigan School of Music Theater & Dance and the Department of Dance present *Tidal Sirens*, a Bachelor of Fine Arts dance concert featuring choreography and performances by graduating seniors Joelie Havey, Kali Hightower, Alana Packo, and Caitlyn Wade.

Free tickets are available at the door starting one hour before the performance.

Joelie Havey abstractly shares the story of her grandparents’ current mental and physical challenges and the impact these two important individuals had on her teen years and early twenties through her choreography.

Kali Hightower’s piece *Terms and Conditions* unravels the masked layers of media influence, examining how society's view is shaped and often distorted by the screen. The piece seeks to challenge the audience to question the authenticity of their perceptions and the information they consume daily. Her solo, *Bluffs* serves as a profound reflection of her life's journey, encapsulating the valuable lessons she has garnered at every significant milestone.

Caitlyn Wade’s *Rage Rage*, is a dance depicting a hypothetical desolate, isolated planet which houses recently deceased mythological humans. Which of these beings are then guided to their permanent residence among the stars? And which of these beings will remain on the planet, not worthy of an honor in the sky? The answer is yet to come. Wade’s solo, included within her group work, follows the same theme, and focuses on a lesser-known Greek mythological character – Boreas, who, after death, became a lost asteroid that probes and orbits the lonesome outskirts of the universe, reflecting the complexity of the emotions surrounding ideas of isolation, abandonment, and self-worth.

Stephen Sondheim creates a stunning tour de force when he takes Ingmar Bergman's comedy of manners, *Smiles of a Summer Night*, and turns it into a musical of masterful execution and elegance. Winner of four Tony Awards, *A Little Night Music* has long entranced the world of theatre.

Set in 1900 Sweden, *A Little Night Music* explores the tangled web of affairs centered around actress Desirée Armfeldt and the men who love her: a lawyer by the name of Fredrik Egerman and the Count Carl-Magnus Malcom. When the traveling actress performs in Fredrik's town, the estranged lovers' passion rekindles. This sparks a flurry of jealousy and suspicion among Desirée; Fredrik; Fredrik's wife, Anne; Desirée's current lover, the Count; and the Count's wife, Charlotte. The men and their wives agree to join Desirée and her family for a weekend in the country at Desirée's mother's estate. With everyone in one place, abundant possibilities for new romances and second chances bring endless surprises.

*A Little Night Music* is full of hilariously witty and heartbreakingly moving moments of adoration, regret, and desire. This dramatic musical celebration of love showcases highly trained singers with its harmonically advanced score and masterful orchestrations, and it includes Sondheim's popular song, the haunting "Send in the Clowns."

The University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance and the Department of Dance present *Exultant Existence*, a Bachelor of Fine Arts senior dance concert featuring works by Cristina Benn, Reina Kitasato, and Annabella Vidrio.

Free tickets are available at the door starting one hour before the performance.

Cristina Benn’s piece *Gratitude* follows a journey in self acceptance, thanking all those before who have guided her to where she is today. *Thyself*, continues the journey of self-acceptance, celebrating the beauty of accepting oneself and embracing all of who you are. The piece is lively and fierce, incorporating elements of Afro-Caribbean styles with hip hop and femme dance.

Reina Kitasato’s *I Offer Prosperity and Eternal Life*, focuses on the concept of the self in relation to others through the lens of nature. The different stages of life and the evolution of one’s self is shown in the dance. Kitasato’s solo, *Unseen*, explores her multicultural background and the difficulties posed by having to navigate two communities while maintaining a sense of self. This is conveyed through a unique storyline and detailed movements.

Annabella Vidrio’s *Reasons I Now Understand* explores themes of cross-cultural communication, systems of love, and acceptance of the unknown. This piece, comprising both her solo and her group choreography, is largely inspired by her upbringing in a vibrant Mexican-American household and throughout the dance, Vidrio incorporates modern techniques and traditional Mexican folkloric dancing. The work is supported in part through the School of Music, Theatre & Dance’s EXCEL Enterprise Fund and the Arts Initiative's Student Mini Grant.

*Halfway There: Health, Home & Hope in Art Song* is a concert program featuring two new song cycles by Mikeila McQueston, pre-candidate for the DMA in Composition, with performances by Loren Reash-Henz, baritone; John Morefield, piano; and guest artist Jenna Grissom, soprano.

*Saltblue & Other Missing Memories* explores how physical, temporal, and metaphorical distances shape our perceptions of home. Ultimately, it emphasizes the importance of personal connection to our overall sense of well-being.

*Ditties for the Struggling Soprano* is a self-care cabaret-style song cycle that highlights serious issues through seriously light-hearted music. American popular culture routinely glorifies busyness and “toughing it out” over self-care, and social media trends perpetuate this image, teaching users to casually embrace terms like “girl dinner,” “fo-mo,” and “binge watching.” Research has shown these trends lead to a decrease in physical and mental well-being, including symptoms like heightened anxiety, sleep problems, and body dysmorphia, among others. For vocal performance majors whose instruments are their bodies, this is of particular concern. Therefore, each ditty is a conversation starter to encourage students to engage in healthier habits and to seek out time for their physical and mental health during the rigors of their collegiate or conservatory education.

*This performance is made possible by a grant from the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance Wellness Program, the EXCEL Lab, and U-M's Eisenberg Family Depression Center.*

Beginning in 2016, Patricia Hall, SMTD professor of music theory, made yearly visits to the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum to search for musical manuscripts. She found a number of pieces that had been copied by hand and arranged by Polish political prisoners in the Auschwitz I men's orchestra. In a collaborative effort with several SMTD students and faculty, as well as Oriol Sans – former faculty member of SMTD and current director of orchestral activities and assistant professor in conducting at the University of Wisconsin Mead Witter School of Music – Hall has prepared these works to be presented in a series of concerts.

On May 7, 2024, an ensemble of undergraduate and graduate students will perform a "launch" concert of the pieces in Britton Recital Hall for their European tour. Further concerts will take place at the Jewish Museum, Vienna (May 13), and at the Galicia Jewish Museum in Krakow (May 16). The performance includes instrumental arrangements as well as songs, with vocals performed by a quartet of singers from the SMTD Department of Voice. The singers will also recite lines from postwar testimonies of the copyists and arrangers, offering an important personal complement to the music being performed.

The concert *Women Defining Themselves* centers around the idea of women embracing their personal narratives of strength, resilience, loss, and self-expression. This captivating evening intertwines the universal language of dance and music and showcases the unique talents of performing artists who are boldly defining how they show up in the world. Included in the program are University of Michigan dance and music faculty, alumni, graduate students, and regional artists/athletes. Following the concert there will be a reception with food, a hands-on exhibit, and socializing.

Additionally, the event is a collaboration with the ALS Center of Excellence at Michigan Medicine. It will help to raise awareness and funding for ALS research, embodying a harmonious blend of philanthropy and artistic expression. This collaboration not only showcases the captivating power of dance and music as a form of advocacy but also highlights a commitment to use the performing arts to make a positive impact on important causes in the community.

Dance/Wellness faculty member Amy West’s personal statement: Why ALS Center of Excellence?

"My 43-year-old niece, Breanna, is a former dancer who was diagnosed with ALS in October of 2023. As she surrenders to this disease, losing her ability to walk and speak, she has developed a keen awareness of how precious life is as she spends the time she has remaining with family, friends, and especially her three children. Reaching out to the ALS Center of Excellence, and having the evening’s performance *Women Defining Themselves* be a fundraiser for ALS, is my way of honoring my niece as well as those individuals who live with terminal illnesses."
