DESCRIPTION:Visit the Clements Library for a celebration the publication of “The City on Three Lakes: A Maritime History of Charlevoix & the Surrounding Region\,” co-authored by David L. Miles and Clements Board Member Ole Lyngklip and published by the Charlevoix Historical Society. We’re proud to have been heavily involved in the publication\, with Curator of Maps and Graphics Sierra Laddusaw co-authoring a chapter with Assistant Curator of Maps Mary Pedley and many postcards from the David V. Tinder Collection of Michigan Photography sprinkled throughout the book. Sierra will present on some of the maps of Michigan featured in the book\, and Assistant Curator of Graphics Jakob Dopp will show off some of the real photo postcards that were included.

SUMMARY:Performance:Golden Age Band Concert
DESCRIPTION:The Golden Age of American Bands captured the imagination of the public in the latter part of the 1800s and through the first decades of the 20th century. Bands became a primary source of entertainment in cities and towns all across the nation and legendary band leaders like Patrick Gilmore and John Philip Sousa were celebrities in their day. Virtuoso soloists like Jules Levy\, Arthur Pryor\, and Herbert L. Clarke dazzled the thousands who flocked to the concerts by these famous bands. \n\nAs part of the formal launch of the Center for American Band History Research at the University of Michigan\, the School of Music\, Theatre & Dance along with the Clements Library are proud to present a concert of traditional music from this era\, played with the authentic instrumentation of these early bands. DESCRIPTION:In her book\, \"Agents of Survivance: Indigenous Women Teachers in the Boarding School Era\,\" Anne Ruggles Gere complicates and enriches established accounts of the Indian boarding school era and what preceded it by looking closely at the largely ignored Indigenous women teachers in these schools.\n\nFocusing on Sarah Winnemucca\, S. Alice Callahan\, Angel DeCora\, and Ella Deloria\, Gere shows how these and many other Indian women teachers subversively resisted assimilation with tribal presence\, relationality\, connection to land\, rejection of victimhood\, and maintenance of cultural traditions\, art\, and languages. Their vulnerable positions in schools directed by Euro-Americans necessitated that their contributions be subversive\, nearly invisible.
