SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:APPLIED PHYSICS I ULTRAFAST XUV SPECTROSCOPY OF VAN DER WAALS MATERIALS
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nOur world is 3D\, yet electrons in van der Waals materials can behave as if they live in 2D sheets\, or even along quasi-1D chains. How does this reduced electronic dimensionality shape the motion of photoexcited charge\, and does it survive when a material is driven far from equilibrium? This nonequilibrium regime is central to both light-driven material function and the emergence of transient states that have no equilibrium counterpart. Answering these questions requires a probe that combines femtosecond time resolution with sensitivity to individual atomic sites. In this talk\, I will introduce our development of table-top ultrafast extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) spectroscopy for single-crystalline van der Waals materials. Broadband XUV pulses access multiple elemental core-level transitions simultaneously\, allowing us to distinguish the responses of electronically active metal sites from those of surrounding ligands. I will present our latest measurements of charge redistribution\, screening\, and coherent lattice motion in van der Waals materials\, and discuss how these results open a site-resolved view of the 2D electronic world far from equilibrium.\n\nBio:\nYuki Kobayashi is an Assistant Professor of Chemistry and a fellow of the Quantum Research Institute at the University of Michigan. He received his Ph.D. from UC Berkeley and was a postdoctoral scholar at Stanford University. Since starting his laboratory at Michigan in 2023\, his group has developed ultrafast XUV and strong-field spectroscopies to study electronic and structural dynamics in quantum materials.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | Illuminating the Dark Sector with Strong Gravitational Lensing
DESCRIPTION:Gravitational lensing is a tool uniquely suited to studying the dark sector. Because its observable properties depend on all mass between the observer and source\, regardless of how that mass interacts with light\, lensing enables the study of total mass distributions from subplanetary to cosmological scales. To interpret strong lensing observations in the context of dark sector physics\, they must typically be compared to cosmological simulations. This comparison is particularly challenging for the cluster strong lensing problem due to the simultaneous requirements for large simulation volume and high resolution\, and the large modeling effort required for each lensing system. As a result\, most existing constraints from strong lensing rely on analytic approximations\, or theoretical predictions that do not account for effects such as line-of-sight structure\, selection effects\, or the systematics of mass modeling in observations. In this talk I will discuss how we can bridge the gap between observations and cosmological simulations\, using a particular tension in the abundance of galaxy-galaxy strong lenses in cluster fields as an illustrative example. I will then discuss what the future holds for dark sector inference as JWST\, Euclid\, LSST\, and Roman revolutionize both the resolution and statistical power of strong lensing observables.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM-AMO Seminar | Revealing Strain and Disorder in Transition-Metal Dichalcogenides Using Hyperspectral Photoluminescence Imaging
DESCRIPTION:Spatial variations in strain and disorder can strongly influence the optical and electronic properties of two-dimensional materials\, even when the samples appear uniform under conventional microscopy. In this talk\, I will show how hyperspectral photoluminescence imaging can map these variations across complete transition-metal dichalcogenide heterostructures. By recording a densely sampled spectrum at each spatial position\, we extract the energies and linewidths of excitons\, trions\, and biexcitons in hBN-encapsulated MoSe₂ and WSe₂ devices. The resulting maps reveal smooth strain gradients\, localized wrinkles and ripples\, and changes produced by thermal cycling. In particular\, resonance linewidth emerges as a sensitive probe of disorder and unresolved strain variations that may be difficult to identify from photoluminescence intensity or peak energy alone. Measurements across several device architectures and fabrication processes demonstrate how this approach can assess optoelectronic uniformity\, identify regions suitable for targeted experiments\, and connect device-scale fabrication quality with local excitonic properties.

DESCRIPTION:We study large-spin operators in conformal field theories (CFTs) in spacetime dimensions d>2 by placing the theory on appropriate pp-wave backgrounds. We show that these geometries admit Heisenberg-group symmetries\, and that these symmetries\, combined with locality of quantum fields on such spacetimes\, impose strong constraints on the asymptotic spectrum in the large-spin limit. The pp-wave backgrounds probe both the small-twist regime\, corresponding to the Regge or light-cone bootstrap\, and a strongly coupled regime of large twist. Finally\, we demonstrate that causality (or the requirement that the energy be bounded from below) leads to a new unitarity bound in 3+1dimensions.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Special HEP-Astro Seminar | Search for Dark Matter Interactions at High Recoil Energy with the LUX-ZEPLIN Experiment
DESCRIPTION:The LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment is a dual-phase xenon time projection chamber designed to search for dark matter interactions with unprecedented sensitivity. While conventional WIMP searches focus primarily on low-energy nuclear recoils\, a broader class of dark matter  models can produce significant signals at much higher recoil energies. In a new search using 2.84 tonne-years of LZ exposure\, we extend the nuclear-recoil energy window to approximately 270 keV to probe momentum- and velocity-dependent interactions described by non-relativistic effective field theory\, as well as inelastic dark matter models. The search observes one event in a region of low expected background\, consistent with a 248 +/- 23 (stat) +/- 23 (sys) keVnr nuclear recoil. I will describe the motivation\, methodology\, and results of this extended-energy search\, including the investigation of the high-energy event and possible background interpretations. I will also highlight work carried out at the University of Michigan that helped enable the extension to high recoil energies\, particularly the calibration and detector-response modeling of electronic and nuclear recoils\, together with studies of backgrounds relevant to the expanded search region.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | Flavor Dependent Jet Fragmentation and Open Science at LHCb
DESCRIPTION:One of the remaining mysteries of the Standard Model is how emergent properties of hadronic matter arise from quark and gluon degrees of freedom. For example\, there is still much to be learned about the process  by which hadrons are formed from color charged quarks and gluons (hadronization). The LHCb detector offers a unique opportunity to study this process in terms of the flavor of quarks involved in the hard scatterin  process\, enabling measurements of the fragmentation process in heavy flavor jets with unprecedented precision. The unique features of these data motivate both a substantial effort to extract high precision measurements of heavy and light flavor jets\, as well as an effort to preserve and provide open access to these data for the physics and data science communities to explore. In this talk\, I will review recent jet fragmentation function measurements from LHCb in comparison to global measurements. I will then briefly cover the LHCb open data efforts\, culminating in the review of a publicly available dataset and analysis workflow enabling exploration of the jet fragmentation process at LHCb.

These all-to-all photon-mediated interactions provide a unique set of tools for\nboth quantum simulation and sensing.  In this talk\, I will discuss our efforts to sculpt\nthese interactions in order to expand the palette of cavity-mediated interactions that can\nbe a realized\, including exchange interactions [1\, 2]\, many-body gap protection of\nquantum coherence [1-3]\, XYZ interactions [4]\, 3 &amp\; 4-body interactions [5]\, and\ndissipative interactions [6-7]. Thompson earned his undergraduate degree in Physics from Florida State University and his Ph.D. in Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  His doctoral work with David E. Pritchard focused on comparing the masses of two trapped ions with precision better than ten parts in a trillion for testing Einstein's mass-energy relationship E=mc2.  As part of this work\, James and his colleague Simon Rainville also discovered a novel method for making non-demolition measurements of the quantum state of single molecules.  James was awarded the APS DAMOP thesis prize for this work.  James moved to the MIT laboratory of Vladan Vuletic at the MIT/Harvard Center for Ultracold Atoms for his postdoctoral work\, where he developed atomic quantum memories and entangled photon sources using laser-cooled atoms.  Since moving to JILA and the Department of Physics at the University of Colorado\, James's work has focused on studying how to exploit collective and quantum effects to advance precision measurement and explore many-body physics. His work includes the demonstration of highly entangled spin-squeezed states\, the realization of superradiant lasers based on mHz linewidth transitions\, development of novel spectroscopy and laser cooling techniques\, and explorations of quantum many-body simulation and dynamical phase transitions.

DESCRIPTION:This is a hybrid lecture. Join us in person at Rackham Amphitheatre (4th Floor) or via livestream: https://myumi.ch/d8Q7X\n\nIn the span of four decades\, quantum computation has evolved from an intellectual curiosity to a potentially realizable technology. I will describe my thesis work on macroscopic quantum tunneling and energy-level quantization that led to the Nobel Prize\, as well as several other important experiments that advanced superconducting qubits.  Nevertheless\, the path toward a full-stack scalable technology is a work in progress. There are significant outstanding quantum hardware\, fabrication\, architecture\, and algorithmic challenges that must be solved. Here\, we show how the road to scaling could be paved by adopting existing semiconductor technology to build much higher-quality qubits and employing system engineering approaches.

DESCRIPTION:A cosmological magnetic field of nG strength on Mpc length scales could be the seed magnetic field needed to explain observed few microG large-scale galactic magnetic fields. I first briefly review the observational and theoretical motivations for such a seed field\, two galactic magnetic field amplification models\, and some non-inflationary seed field generation scenarios. I then discuss an inflation magnetic field generation model. I conclude by mentioning possible extensions of this model as well as potentially observable consequences.

Bharat Ratra will describe the astronomical data that persuades cosmologists that dark matter and the as-yet-undetected dark energy are by far the main components of the universe at present. He will review how observations have led to the development of a quantitative \"standard\" model of cosmology that describes the evolution of the universe from the structureless epoch of inflation to the complex structure seen today. In this non-technical talk\, he will also discuss the basic physics and the history of the ideas underlying this model.

By observing the sky across all forms of light – from radio waves to visible light to gamma rays – we can turn images from telescopes into measurements of the cosmos. In this talk\, I describe how we go from taking images with telescopes all the way to making grand statements about the expansion of the Universe\, focusing on exploding stars called supernovae and examples from my research projects DEHVILS and SAINTS.
