"description":"The Nam Center for Korean Studies is delighted to sponsor this screening! Known as the \"Father of Video Art,\" Nam June Paik was a visionary who predicted our hyper-connected world decades before the internet existed. His work blended deep philosophy with playful mischief, famously using everything from magnets to ancient statues to redefine how we interact with screens. \n\nPaik\u2019s journey is a powerful story of resilience. Despite facing years of financial and visa struggles in New York, he stayed true to his avant-garde roots and was eventually welcomed back to Korea as a national hero. This film, Nam June Paik: The Moon is the Oldest TV, captures his electric life through rare archival footage and personal diaries, featuring peers like John Cage and Joseph Beuys. \n\nJoin us for this inspiring look at a Korean-American icon, followed by a Q&A with Chien-An Yuan, an Ann Arbor-based interdisciplinary artist, designer, and educator, Yuan is a founding member of the AAPI performance collaborative IS\/LAND and runs the record label 1473. His diverse work in sound and visuals has been featured in The New Yorker and the Detroit Institute of Arts.\n\n*Accommodation: If there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you, please contact us at outreachkorea@umich.edu. "description":"Jillian Locke from the U-M Center for Japanese Studies will present a short talk on the history of traditional Japanese family crests and share information about this selection of crest plates in the Ann Arbor District Library's letterpress collection.\n \n Letterpress is the traditional process of printing by hand using movable type. This lab will feature a short guided activity to get familiar with assembling and printing a letterpress project. Participants will be able to use wood type, handset lead type, and ornaments, as well as learn how to hand ink and print on a Vandercook cylinder press. If you'd like, you can stay longer to work on a more involved project.\n \n Due to the presence of lead-based type, this program is intended for adults.\n \n New to letterpress? Please arrive at the start of the program for a 20-minute demonstration of how to use the equipment.\n \n This event is part of Ann Arbor Japan Week 2026, held in partnership with the Ann Arbor District Library: https:\/\/aadl.org\/node\/666415\n \n The 12th annual Ann Arbor Japan Week is from June 14 to 20.
