DESCRIPTION:Join the Women's and Gender Studies Department for a talk by CNM Jessica Tsipe Angelson!\n\nOpen to all\, but especially for students of Gender and Health\, Professor Angelson will be discussing survivors' experiences of severe maternal morbidity. \n\nThis event is being held in Room 2239 Lane Hall\, and there is an option for attendance by Zoom (https://umich.zoom.us/j/98461041635). \n\n*Jessica Tsipe Angelson is an Assistant Professor of Midwifery and Women’s Health at Thomas Jefferson University\, where she is leading the reimagining of the only Doctor of Midwifery program in the country. Her current research focuses on the observed increase in severe maternal morbidity (SMM) in the United States and on clinical guideline development for survivors of SMM. Her broader interests include maternal health systems and midwifery workforce development\, systems to support physiologic birth\, global trends in cesarean birth\, and reproductive justice. She has been a midwife since 2014\, working in hospitals\, homes\, and a freestanding birth center.*

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Feminist Voices Across Generations
DESCRIPTION:Join the Inclusive History Project as we celebrate the launch of the Women's and Gender Studies Oral History Archive\, a new resource documenting the history and impact of Women’s and Gender Studies\, Women in Learning and Leadership\, and LGBTQ Studies at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. Through personal stories and reflections\, the collection explores the origins of these programs\, the labor and care that have sustained them through changing contexts\, and their ripple effects in and beyond the University.\n\nThe event will feature a panel discussion with individuals whose oral histories are included in the collection\, offering firsthand perspectives on advocacy\, challenges\, community-building\, and institutional change. Attendees will also hear from the students and faculty who created the project and learn how to access and use the collection for research\, teaching\, and engagement.\n\nThe panel discussion will be followed by a reception with a DJ and light fare. All are welcome. \n\nThe Women's and Gender Studies Oral History Archive at the University of Michigan-Dearborn is an outcome of the IHP Research and Engagement grant led by Dr. Amy Brainer with the assistance of Fatima al-Bedany and Lyla Kerr. \n\nRegistration is encouraged. DESCRIPTION:How do reproductive practices shape religious traditions\, and how can the labor of reproduction become a site of feminist intervention?\n\nJoin the Institute for Research on Women & Gender for the latest installment of Gender: New Works\, New Questions\, featuring Gestating Judaism: The Corporeal Technologies of American Jewish Religion by Cara Rock-Singer\, assistant professor of Judaic Studies at the University of Michigan.\n\nIn Gestating Judaism\, Rock-Singer examines how reproductive practices shape the transmission and reinvention of American Judaism. Bringing together religious rituals\, such as the mikveh\, with contemporary practices like fertility treatments\, she challenges conventional distinctions between religion\, science\, and politics. Through an innovative approach she calls “ethnodrashy\,” Rock-Singer explores how Jewish feminists use reproductive labor to engage with questions of theology\, identity\, and political life.\n\nThe event will feature a panel discussion with Rock-Singer\, Liz Roberts\, professor of anthropology\, and Lisa Disch\, professor of political science. The conversation will be moderated by IRWG director and professor of women’s and gender studies\, Melynda Price.\n\nDrawing on perspectives from religious studies\, anthropology\, political science\, and gender studies\, the panel will explore how reproductive bodies become sites of religious meaning\, feminist engagement\, and cultural change.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation with Alice Miranda Ollstein\, POLITICO’s senior health care reporter\, about her new book\, Side Effects: How Abortion Bans Impact Everyone’s Health\, a groundbreaking investigation into how the overturning of Roe v. Wade has transformed American health care far beyond reproductive rights. Drawing on years of on-the-ground reporting\, Ollstein examines how abortion restrictions have affected patients\, physicians\, and researchers across the country\, creating barriers to medically necessary pregnancy care\, fertility treatments\, contraception\, and other health services. Her reporting also reveals broader consequences for medical research\, hospital staffing\, wait times\, and the treatment of chronic illnesses as health care providers navigate legal uncertainty and the threat of prosecution.\n\nThrough the experiences of patients and medical professionals\, Side Effects reframes abortion bans as a public health crisis with consequences for people of all ages\, genders\, and geographic locations.
