But what would a Con-Con actually look like? And what can voters understand about past Con-Cons that will help them say yes or no on this year\u2019s ballot? \n\nThis fall, on November 3, it will be on Michigan ballots as \u201cProposal 1.\u201d\n\nIf voters say yes to Proposal 1, that would begin the process of holding a constitutional convention \u2013 or \u201cCon-Con.\u201d\n\nDuring a Con-Con, delegates can make changes to the state constitution.\n\nBut what would a Con-Con actually look like? The young state of Michigan played a key role in the union\u2019s victory both on and off the battlefield. Join us for a conversation with historian Jack Dempsey about Michiganders\u2019 Civil War experiences and how its legacy shaped Michigan history.\n\nJack Dempsey is an avid historian who has long been interested in the Civil War and its role in Michigan\u2019s history and cultural heritage. An award-winning author he has written eleven books, numerous articles, and given innumerable talks to academic and general audiences, as well as serving as President of the Michigan Historical Commission. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Michigan State University and a law degree from George Washington University.\n\nThis talk is in conjunction with the exhibition \u201cFill the Ranks\u201d: the University of Michigan and the Civil War, on display September 24, 2026-July 2, 2027.\n\nRefreshments will be provided, and anyone is welcome to attend this free talk.
