But how should we understand the ways the past shaped and produced this present? And how can, or should we, write and map the histories of people rooted in oral cultures? This presentation explores the premise that reading Lagos\u2019s streets shapes the ways to ask, analyze and frame nineteenth-century narratives of the city. By drawing new maps of Lagos and the lagoon, I transcribe the answers to these questions as they were understood and framed in the city\u2019s social geography.\n\nTrained as both historian and computer engineer, Ademide\u2019s research into the history of West African cities combines a set of interdisciplinary interests in maps, mapmaking, and digital humanities. Her first book,\u00a0Imagine Lagos, explores the city\u2019s 19th-century history. It was awarded the Best Book Prize in 2024 by the African Studies Association and is a finalist for the Association for the Study of the Worldwide African Diaspora\u2019s Outstanding First Book award. To take one example, British maps of 19th century Lagos Island produced by various imperial agents in the overlapping contexts of colonial expansion, enslavement, and war reflect a colonial agenda positing the urban center as blank space. In order to write a history of 19th century Lagos which centers its Indigenous and African inhabitants and their everyday experiences, Ademide Adelusi-Adeluyi supplements such maps with an embodied \u201cwalking cartography\u201d and oral histories of the colonized, creating rich \u201cspeculative maps\u201d of the city. Adelusi-Adeluyi\u2019s scholarship grapples with central spatial-historical questions such as: What arguments do, or might, maps make? What revelations do illustrated, oral, spatial, and other kinds of sources provide which the written record does not? How might speculative research methods fill gaps left by power asymmetries exposed in the archival record? What are possible ways to read indigenous history, movements, and knowledge in the physical environment? This panel is inspired by the possibilities that arise from such a \u201csocial and spatial reading\u201d of \u201can incomplete and sometimes fragmentary archive,\u201d in the particular context of pre-colonial or colonial urban history broadly conceived, including examples of \u201cinternal colonization\u201d. \n\nThe Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies welcomes paper submissions from graduate students working on urban history, architecture, mapping or spatial studies, digital humanities, and\/or embodied methodologies. Starting from these trees and their relationship to time, this presentation elucidates the relationship between fruit production and violence at the end of empire. Many who planted the trees left\u2014or were forced to leave\u2014and newly settled people\u2014many of them refugees themselves\u2014came to care for these living relics of past social worlds. Through apricots, figs, grapes, hazelnuts, olives, and pistachios, the project places displaced people and their rootedness in the face of uprooting at the center, and suggests their role in Turkey\u2019s world-leading production of these commodities today. \n\nSamuel Dolbee is an environmental historian of the modern Middle East, and an assistant professor at Vanderbilt University. His first book Locusts of Power was the co-winner of the 2024 Ottoman and Turkish Studies Association Book Prize. Situating these contemporary struggles within a broader historical perspective, however, reveals that gendered childhood, as a concept and social project, has long served as a site onto which collective fears, social aspirations, and competing visions of citizenship and belonging are projected. While scholars of the classical past and modern period registered environmental changes made by their powerful states a little earlier, the topic caught on more slowly in the medieval field, where small and ineffective states posed different methodological challenges. It took different ways of studying nature to see how environments changed in Europe and the Mediterranean during the millennium between 500 and 1500 CE. Scholars of the medieval environment of necessity adopted an acrobatic approach to the past, bringing together the usual tools of the historian -- close textual analysis \u2013 with archaeology, archaeobotany, and scientific studies of pollen distribution, weather patterns, and the contents of middens. Today, the field of medieval environmental history represents one of the most methodologically diverse and inventive among any branch of history.\n\n\nThis one-day conference, with an opening session on the previous afternoon, will appraise the major developments and turning points of the last 30 years in medieval environmental history with papers from some of the leading scholars in the field. Since one of the pioneers in medieval environmental history, Paolo Squatriti, has been on the faculty of the U of M for 25 years, the conference will take cues from his seminal works and methodological turns. While scholars of the classical past and modern period registered environmental changes made by their powerful states a little earlier, the topic caught on more slowly in the medieval field, where small and ineffective states posed different methodological challenges. It took different ways of studying nature to see how environments changed in Europe and the Mediterranean during the millennium between 500 and 1500 CE. Scholars of the medieval environment of necessity adopted an acrobatic approach to the past, bringing together the usual tools of the historian -- close textual analysis \u2013 with archaeology, archaeobotany, and scientific studies of pollen distribution, weather patterns, and the contents of middens. Today, the field of medieval environmental history represents one of the most methodologically diverse and inventive among any branch of history.\n\n\nThis one-day conference, with an opening session on the previous afternoon, will appraise the major developments and turning points of the last 30 years in medieval environmental history with papers from some of the leading scholars in the field. Since one of the pioneers in medieval environmental history, Paolo Squatriti, has been on the faculty of the U of M for 25 years, the conference will take cues from his seminal works and methodological turns. Two features of this social world\u2014interracial sexual relationships between African women and European men and the concomitant growth of an Afro-European population that remained embedded in African society\u2014were key drivers of the process of racialization unleashed by the transatlantic slave trade. This process would evolve over the course of four centuries in ways that gave Afro-European men the social positionality, financial resources, and political impetus to be the first founders of African-owned newspapers in colonial Ghana. Their newspapers reveal a late-nineteenth-century West African epistemology of blackness that stretched beyond its elite (primarily) Afro-European origins as literacy rates grew, newspaper publishing expanded, and the language of race became a politically consequential medium in the twentieth century that enabled dissent and shaped how Africans in the colony\u2019s growing public sphere debated and fought for political futures defined not by their colonizers, but by themselves.\n\nCarina Ray is a scholar of race and sexuality; comparative colonialisms and nationalisms; migration and maritime history; print cultures; bodily aesthetics, and the relationship between race, ethnicity, and political power. Ray\u2019s research is primarily focused on Ghana and its diasporas. She is the author of Crossing the Color Line: Race, Sex, and the Contested Politics of Colonialism in Ghana, winner of the American Historical Association's 2016 Wesley-Logan Book Prize and the African Studies Association's 2017 Aidoo-Snyder Book Prize. Her articles have appeared in Gender and History, PMLA, The Journal of West African History, and The American Historical Review, among others. Gifu University Medical School was selected to work in Iran, launching a flow of Japanese personnel and scientific equipment to the laboratories of Tehran University. While Iranian scientists were primarily interested in receiving technical aid, Japanese scientists were eager to conduct joint fieldwork projects. The organization of a joint expedition to northern Iran in 1972 exposed a series of tensions in the Japanese-Iranian collaboration. The team eventually collected blood samples from thousands of Iranian villagers to screen them for pathologies. Then, most of these blood samples were shipped to Japan, where they had a surprising afterlife. Circulating through laboratories in Tokyo, Nagasaki, and Osaka, the Iranian blood was incorporated into a research project to analyze genetic variation within Japan\u2019s own population, and data from the samples featured in Japanese publications hypothesizing about the origins of the Japanese race. Meanwhile, in publications with Iranian co-authors, the meaning of the genetic data had to be re-negotiated according to Iranian understandings of racial identity.\n\nElise K. Burton is an associate professor for the Institute of the History & Philosophy of Science & Technology at the University of Toronto. She is the author of Genetic Crossroads: The Middle East and the Science of Human Heredity (Stanford University Press, 2021).
