Beginning with the aftermath of the 2011 racist attack in Florence that killed two Senegalese men, the film explores how migrant communities negotiate belonging within contemporary Italian society. Through multilingual testimony—including Italian, Wolof, and French—and observational documentary practice, Va' Pensiero challenges conventional narratives of migration by foregrounding the voices and lived experiences of migrants themselves.

The screening will be followed by a conversation with Yimer about the making of Va' Pensiero, documentary filmmaking as a form of witnessing and political storytelling, and the representation of migration and Black life in contemporary Italy.

The event is part of “Migration, Memory, and the Politics of Witnessing: A Residency with Filmmaker Dagmawi Yimer,” October 7–9, 2026.
In 2022, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni became the first far-right leader of Italy since Fascism and the first woman to ever lead the country. Four years later, Meloni has proven resilient, despite challenging economic indicators and after losing a referendum to limit the independence of the judiciary. A skillful politician, Meloni has deftly navigated between Italy’s commitments to the European Union and the country’s longtime strategic alliance with the United States, even as the Trump Administration has pushed to scale back NATO in Europe, causing confusion and distress in Europe’s halls of power.

From Fascism to the personality-driven phenomenon of Silvio Berlusconi to the anti-system Five Star Movement, Italy has always been a political laboratory, a harbinger of political trends to come. With this lens, what larger lessons can we draw from Meloni’s leadership about the direction of Italy and Europe? Has Meloni normalized the far right or transformed it into a mainstream conservative movement? What are her most concrete accomplishments? As a study in power, what do we make of this small, blonde, fierce woman who insists on using the masculine form of address, “Signor Presidente”?

The annual M. Teresa Poggi Lecture on Italy and the Mediterranean World focuses on contemporary and historical issues related to the region. It is made possible by a generous gift from Stephanie and Sue Augustyniak in honor of their mother.

Rachel Donadio is a Paris-based writer, a contributing writer for *The Atlantic*, and a former Rome Bureau Chief and European Culture Correspondent for *The New York Times*. She regularly publishes textured profiles and features at the intersection of culture and politics, as well as literary criticism, and is a frequent contributor to *The New York Review of Books*. Donadio has reported from more than two dozen countries and interviewed heads of state and major cultural figures, including four Nobel Laureates in literature.

In her many years covering Italy, she has written on Giorgia Meloni’s culture wars, Curzio Malaparte, Nicola Gratteri when he was a leading Italian anti-Mafia prosecutor, former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, Gina Lollobrigida, Paolo Sorrentino, a rare book theft in Naples, why Italians gesticulate, Amalfi lemons, a family of centenarians in Sardinia, a Bangladeshi Cricket league in Rome, and the first non-Italian director of the Uffizi. She has also covered the Vatican and led *The New York Times* coverage of the conclave in which Pope Francis was elected.

If there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you, please contact gosiak@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.
The field of medieval environmental history has grown immensely from its inception 30 years ago. While scholars of the classical past and modern period registered environmental changes made by their powerful states a little earlier, the topic caught on more slowly in the medieval field, where small and ineffective states posed different methodological challenges. It took different ways of studying nature to see how environments changed in Europe and the Mediterranean during the millennium between 500 and 1500 CE. Scholars of the medieval environment of necessity adopted an acrobatic approach to the past, bringing together the usual tools of the historian -- close textual analysis – with archaeology, archaeobotany, and scientific studies of pollen distribution, weather patterns, and the contents of middens. Today, the field of medieval environmental history represents one of the most methodologically diverse and inventive among any branch of history.

This one-day conference, with an opening session on the previous afternoon, will appraise the major developments and turning points of the last 30 years in medieval environmental history with papers from some of the leading scholars in the field. Since one of the pioneers in medieval environmental history, Paolo Squatriti, has been on the faculty of the U of M for 25 years, the conference will take cues from his seminal works and methodological turns. Panels will offer papers within the following themes: 1. History in the mundane 2. Historical agency and unexpected actors 3. The Mediterranean as a place of hybridity 4. Materiality and the past 5. Science in the service of history.

Featuring:
Jon Arnold (University of Tulsa)
Henrik Dey (Hunter College)
Hussein Fancy (Yale University)
Benjamin Graham (University of Memphis)
Richard Hoffman (York University)
Alyssa Kotva (The Ohio State University)
Jamie Kreiner (University of California, Los Angeles)
Stephanie Leitzel (Cornell University)",
