Drawing on long-term ethnographic research in the de facto Georgia-Abkhazia borderland, this talk examines how displaced Georgians with constructed lives across an unrecognized but highly militarized border learn to navigate a landscape in which mobility is continually subject to political, material, and documentary contingencies. Rather than approaching protracted conflict primarily through rupture, destruction, or spectacular violence, Aydemir-Kundakci focuses on everyday eventfulness: how ordinary journeys to attend a wedding, shop, visit family, or go to a hospital can unexpectedly become consequential\u2014when rising waters turn a familiar river crossing into a life-threatening swim, a document check evolves into harassment or extortion, or a passport stamp creates the risk of punishment on the other side.\n\nAydemir-Kundakci develops the concept of manageable eventfulness to describe the practical and anticipatory work through which people seek not necessarily to eliminate such contingencies altogether, but to keep their consequences within manageable limits. Following these practices across changing border regimes, landscapes, documents, and generations, she shows how people continually recalibrate their movements and anticipations as they strive for uneventful, ordinary lives amid prolonged conflict.\n\nDr. G\u00f6rkem Aydemir-Kundakci is an FWO Postdoctoral Fellow in Anthropology at KU Leuven. Her research examines long-term displacement, conflict, mobility, environmental change, and precarity in Georgia\u2019s de facto borderland with Abkhazia.\u202fShe holds a PhD in Anthropology from George Washington University and held a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Calgary. Professor Greta Uehling will draw on ethnographic fieldwork in Tbilisi, including interviews with artists, activists, and viewers supported to explore the forces that complicate its communicative potential. Uehling extends a Barthian approach that foregrounds the reception of street art and the contested meanings that emerge around it. In this talk, she will explore the state\u2019s appropriation of street-art aesthetics through government-sponsored projects, as well as private citizens\u2019 power to veto murals on their buildings. She will then turn to gender as a contested terrain where Georgia\u2019s European aspirations meet enduring social norms. Ironic engagement assumes that Yugoslav solidarity with formerly colonized populations during the Cold War was empty rhetoric, driven by a pragmatic desire to establish the country as a significant player on the geopolitical stage. Nostalgic engagement, by contrast, is shaped by the belief that Yugoslavs were motivated by an honest ideological commitment to solidarity and anti-racism that ultimately placed them on the \u201cright side\u201d of history. Both ironic and nostalgic engagements with socialist humanitarianism evaluate the past through contemporary ideas about solidarity, socialism, capitalism, and their interrelations.\n\nTo understand socialist humanitarianism on its own terms, Brkovi\u0107 proposes reading it through the double grain of state socialism and the end of history. Such an analytical approach illuminates the role of racial socialism\u2014socialist ideologies of \u201crace\u201d and local racial projects\u2014and its interactions with global racial hierarchies, showing how these ideologies were shaped by particular value constellations.\n\nBy discussing a 1961 humanitarian initiative of the Yugoslav Red Cross that brought sixty children and young people from the Congo to Tivat, Montenegro, this talk sheds light on the workings of socialist whiteness. This was not a colourist project but rather a normative regime of political value with two key characteristics: it ascribed superiority to Yugoslavs on the basis of their greater socialist experience, and it overlooked present problems in favour of a future in which \u201crace\u201d would no longer matter.\n\n\u010carna Brkovi\u0107 is professor of cultural studies and European ethnology at the University of Mainz. Dr. Brkovi\u0107 has a PhD in Social Anthropology from the University of Manchester and a BA in Ethnology and Anthropology from the University of Belgrade. Drawing on the new co-authored volume, *Heritage Forensics: Cultural on the Front Lines of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Conflict*, the presentation examines how cultural sites became entangled in the conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh during the interwar period (1994-2020). The talk considers how satellite-based heritage forensics is being deployed prospectively, to monitor hundreds of Armenian sites in Karabakh following Azerbaijan's 2023 takeover of the region and the displacement of its Armenian population. In doing so, it asks: how can satellite-based monitoring function as a form of \"counter-forensics,\" turning surveillance technologies developed for military purposes back on the state? Can heritage forensics move us beyond retrospective documentation to actively deter erasure and support truth, reconciliation, and accountability wherever cultural heritage is at stake?\n\nLori Khatchadourian is Professor of Near Eastern Studies and Anthropology at Cornell University, and co-founder and co-director of Caucasus Heritage Watch. She currently serves as Director of the Cornell Institute of Archaeology and Material Studies. Khatchadourian\u2019s research spans the fields of archaeology, social anthropology, and heritage studies, with a particular focus on Armenia, the wider South Caucasus, and neighboring regions. Current projects explore the archaeology of modernity, including problems of genocide, deindustrialization, and the entanglements of cultural heritage and war. She is the co-author of *Heritage Forensics: Culture on the Front Lines of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Conflict* (Cornell, 2026) and author of Imperial Matter: Ancient Persia and the Archaeology of Empires (UC Press, 2016). She will show how disability, sexuality, and race\u2014though often rendered invisible\u2014have shaped the postsocialist consensus in the Czech Republic and more broadly.\n\nThe talk will focus on how discourses of \u201cinadaptability\u201d have contributed to racialized abandonment. Kol\u00e1\u0159ov\u00e1 will examine how particular understandings of disability helped establish an ideal of rehabilitated, white postsocialist citizenship. She will also consider the \u201cneoliberalization of race\u201d and the \u201cracialization of neoliberalism\u201d (Mahtani and Roberts) within the specific historical and political context of the Czech Republic and post socialist Eastern Europe. Specifically, Kol\u00e1\u0159ov\u00e1 will explore how portrayals of Roma people as \u201cinadaptable (non)citizens\u201d have been used to determine who belongs in shared public spaces and whose exposure to violence is treated as morally defensible. The talk will conclude by examining forms of resistance that open up alternative possibilities, or \u201ccrip horizons.\u201d\n\nKate\u0159ina Kol\u00e1\u0159ov\u00e1 is associate professor of sociology at Charles University in Prague. Kol\u00e1\u0159ov\u00e1\u2019s other recent work takes the feminist queer crip perspective to explore the bio-social dimensions of metabolism, \u201ccrip guts,\u201d the relationship between human and non-human lives, and how we coexist with microorganisms, toxic chemicals, and other \"unclean\" elements\/entities. She is currently working on a monograph exploring HIV and human-viral coexistence (forthcoming in 2027). What started as a slow rejection of the idea that the region benefited from Soviet control has turned into a decentralized, collective effort to revise the region\u2019s relationship to its colonial identity and to search for indigenous interpretations of the self. A recent Cambridge Element publication co-authored by Erica Marat and Aizada Arystanbek explores the current decolonial disruptions in Central Asia \u2013 how the region is being redefined by its inhabitants, both in discourse and in practice. It captures the main areas of activism in memory studies, language activism, art installations, and transnational solidarity networks. Decolonial discussions are gaining traction, challenging political elites\u2019 hegemony over national identity formation. Such changes harbor the potential to profoundly alter Russia\u2019s influence in the areas it once controlled.
