This gap underscores the urgent need for technologies tailored to the unique physiology of newborns and children, particularly for conditions involving the brain. Our research addresses this challenge by engineering microphysiological models that replicate the complexity of the brain microenvironment and enable systematic evaluation of therapeutic strategies. In this talk, I will highlight how we use physiologically relevant models to inform the design of neuroprotective strategies for neonatal and pediatric brain diseases. I will show a few case studies of leveraging these models to screen therapeutics, including the use of nanotechnology platforms for small molecule delivery, to advance their use in the clinic. By bridging engineering, neuroscience, and data science, our goal is to close the technology gap for children’s therapeutics and improve neurological health across the lifespan.

*Bio:*
Dr. Elizabeth Nance is the Steven & Connie Rogel Endowed Professor & Department Chair of Chemical Engineering at UW, Professor of Bioengineering, and Adjunct Professor in Radiology. We have studied several classes of networks containing different polymer backbone, pendent group, and crosslinker structure and sought to better understand how chemical and structural parameters of the networks influence their device performance. In one example, we have introduced high mobility silicone backbones that lower the glass transition temperature and therefore improve conductivity of the materials. Remarkably, heterojunctions at the interface of polyanionic and polycationic layers of such networks exhibit strongly temperature-dependent rectification, providing insight into the critical role of interfacial polymer dynamics in the operation of these devices. In another example, we have introduced a modular route to prepare polyanionic networks that relies on Sulfur (VI) fluoride exchange (SuFEx) ‘click’ chemistry, enabling a systematic study of how ionic conductivity depends on the length of short perfluorinated pendent groups. A non-monotonic dependence is identified due to the competing effects of ion association and aggregation. Finally, we have studied a variety of different crosslinking species as a route to tune conductivity, stiffness, and toughness of these materials.

*Bio:*
Ryan Hayward is the Department Chair and Hudson Moore Endowed Professor in Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder.
A reception with light refreshments will be held in the B10 lobby before each seminar from 1-1:30 p.m.

*Abstract:*
Bridged polysilsesquioxane (BPS) is a hybrid organosilica material combining the mechanical strength of inorganic silica with the tunable chemical and structural properties of organic bridging groups. While BPS materials are widely explored as adsorbents, their application in catalysis remains limited. Here, we investigate BPS as a palladium (Pd) catalyst support for the aqueous-phase hydrogenation of lignocellulosic bio-oil aromatic model compounds and the hydrogenolysis of trichloroethylene (TCE), a toxic groundwater pollutant. Leveraging BPS tunability, we synthesized hydrophobic Pd supports: aryl-bridged polysilsesquioxane (ABPS) and its swellable counterpart, S-ABPS (also referred as swellable organically modified silica (SOMS)). ABPS-supported Pd catalysts exhibited remarkable activity for phenol hydrogenation and TCE hydrodechlorination, significantly outperforming commercial Pd catalysts. Furthermore, while state-of-the-art Pd catalysts suffer from slow kinetics at low temperatures/concentrations and poisoning by sulfur and chlorine species (SO42-, HS-, Cl-), the S-ABPS catalyst demonstrated exceptional deactivation resistance. We also investigated the effect of support’s organic content, aromaticity, and basicity on catalyst properties, activity, and selectivity. Using in situ and ex situ spectroscopy, X-ray absorption, and thermogravimetric analysis, we have established structure-property-activity relationships. Ultimately, this work demonstrates that ABPS is a highly promising support for noble metal catalysts, offering superior metal dispersion, poisoning resistance, and tunable aqueous-phase activity and selectivity.

*Bio:*
Umit S.
