Among them was Hena (Dutt) Das, who remained in (East) Pakistan after Partition, and who would be politically and socially engaged in Bangladesh until her death in 2009. In this talk, Shehabuddin will focus on the revolutionary education and experiences that first brought Hena Dutt and her teenage classmates to the Communist Party, how they understood and inhabited communism in their daily lives, and how their personal and political histories complicate ideas about religious and national belonging, about the much-described tug between communism and feminism, and about the relationship between the personal and the political.\n\nElora Shehabuddin is professor of gender & women's studies, director of global studies, and director of the Subir and Malini Chowdhury Center for Bangladesh Studies at UC Berkeley. Her last book, *Sisters in the Mirror: A History of Muslim Women and the Global Politics of Feminism* was selected as a 2022 Choice Outstanding Academic Title by the American Library Association and awarded the 2023 Ananda Kentish Coomaraswamy Book Prize from the Association for Asian Studies. Her work explores historical art forms through the lens of personal subjectivities, using a range of visual and literary sources. Working at different scales and on varied surfaces, her contemporary practice critically engages a wide range of visual methods, materials and styles.\n\nSheikh's solo exhibition 'Fractured Skies' at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York will be on view from September 27, 2026 through June 13, 2027. Recent exhibitions include 'The Imaginary Institution of India' at the Barbican Centre in London (2024), the Sharjah Biennial 15 titled 'Thinking Historically in the Present' (2023), the Dhaka Art Summit (2020), the Kochi-Muziris Biennale (2018), Documenta 14 in Kassel and Athens (2017), and 'Each night put Kashmir in your dreams' at the Art Institute of Chicago (2014). It does so by examining the life and intellectual biography of Syed Abid Husain (1896\u20131978), drawing upon his extensive corpus of works \u2013 including translations from German into Urdu, creative literary writings, and educational and political activism at Jamia Millia Islamia \u2013 to paint a portrait of a nationalist Indian Muslim in colonial and postcolonial India. Moving beyond the framework of nationalist history and adopting a global intellectual history approach, my lecture aims to expand our geographical and conceptual understanding of ideas by mapping what I call the minor cosmopolitanisms of Husain\u2019s intellectual journeys. I argue that Husain\u2019s engagement with both German majoritarian and minority thought worlds offer valuable insights into the minority not merely as a political category but also as an intellectual and ethical one. Ultimately, I contend that Husain\u2019s life and writings provide unique insight on both the crises facing democracy and the potential for critical secularism and minority thought in an era dominated by majoritarian nationalism.\n\nDr. Razak Khan is a senior research fellow in global history at the Department of History, Free University, Berlin. He is part of the European Research Council funded project \u201cUnfamiliar: Family, Law, and Democracy in South Asia.\u201d It looks at the intersection of religion, gender and sexual minorities, and family law on the issues of marriage, adoption, and inheritance. His monograph *Minority Pasts: Locality, Emotions, and Belonging in Rampur* was published by (Oxford University Press, 2022). He also edited the English translation edition of *The Incomparable Festival* (Penguin Random House India, 2021) and co-edited *Nodes of Translation: Intellectual History between Modern India and Germany* (De Gruyter, 2024). Many of these priests are from India and they come on the R-1 temporary religious worker visa - a lesser researched visa category in South Asian diaspora studies that does not require a salary, only compensation. Thomas' research shows that 64%+ of missionary priests from India come from dominant caste backgrounds. Based on chapters from my forthcoming book on Indian Catholic priests in Eastern Montana and Western North Dakota, in this talk I discuss caste, remittances, and the intricacies of the R-1 religious worker visa. \n\nSonja Thomas is a professor of women\u2019s gender and sexuality studies at Colby College. Ambedkar\u2019s (1891\u20131956) multi-pronged \u2013 social, cultural and political \u2013 strategies of creating manuski (human dignity), dharmantar (religious conversion) and respectable samaj (community) in a doubly colonial \u2013 British and brahmanical context. To Ambedkar, the larger Indian society denied manuski to Dalits. The caste mechanism restricted Dalits claims to personhood as Dalit humanity itself was constituted as a state of injury and punishment. The consequences were particularly dangerous for Dalit women lacking even minimal security. As a result, Ambedkar and his associates focused on both\u2014external and internal\u2014changes to cultivate manuski. Ambedkar constituted a new Dalit woman through these inner resources and interrelated ideas of an intrinsically caring and civilized humanity. He along with his associates robustly worked on a multi-pronged strategy\u2014social, educational, political, legal, and religious, to regenerate Dalits and not merely reform them like in the case of elite touchable reformers.\n\nShailaja Paik is Charles Phelps Taft Distinguished Professor of History and affiliate faculty in women\u2019s, Gender, and sexuality studies, sociology, and Asian studies at the University of Cincinnati. She is a 2024 MacArthur Foundation \u201cgenius\u201d Fellow. Paik is also the founding executive director of the Institute for Just Futures. Her work analyzes the politics of caste, gender, class, and sexuality, by focusing on the ideas, actions, and lives of Dalits (\u201cUntouchables\u201d). She is the author of the prestigious awards-winning book *The Vulgarity of Caste: Dalits, Sexuality, and Humanity* (Stanford University Press, 2022) and *Dalit Women's Education in Modern India: Double Discrimination* (Routledge, 2014). Ganti illustrates the essential role played by translation in the political economy of media industries through an examination of screenwriting and dubbing practices in Mumbai. Investigating the translation practices, linguistic ideologies, and regimes of value structuring mainstream media production, she argues that translation is not merely a linguistic bridge but a constitutive and material force in media production. Foregrounding the symbiotic relationship between Hindi and English within Mumbai\u2019s media industries, Ganti demonstrates that translation operates beyond notions of linguistic purity or inherent hierarchy and is a dynamic and multimodal process of creating social, aesthetic, and economic value.\n\nTejaswini Ganti is professor of anthropology and core faculty in the Program in Culture & Media at New York University. A media anthropologist specializing in South Asia, her research and teaching interests include Indian cinema, media industries, production cultures, translation studies, visual culture, cultural policy, elites, political economy, and theories of development and globalization.
