SUMMARY:Performance:A Celebration of the Stearns Collection of Musical Instruments
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the Stearns Collection of Musical Instruments end-of-year concert at Hill Auditorium with ensemble performances of Baroque\, contemporary and found music played by dozens of U-M students and faculty. Listen to the diverse range of instruments in the collection including:\n\n- the Indonesian Gamelan in a performance of Lou Harrison’s Concerto for Piano and Gamelan\,\n- our recently-restored original Moog synthesizer with Professors Amy Chavasse and Jeremy Edwards joined by their students\,\n- Newly-donated 19th century brass instruments played by Professors Robert Sullivan and David Zerkel with the Dodworth Saxhorn Band\,\n- A newly-restored early 18th century viola da gamba played by guest artist Eva Lymenstull\,\n- Chinese and European Baroque Chamber Orchestras\,\n- A multi-keyboard carillon performance of Professor Roshanne Etezady’s TIMEPLAY\,\n- and an Asian-inspired dragon dance featuring newly created instruments by Professor Michael Gould and his students\, as well as a newly constructed dragon made by guest artist Zhen Guo\n\n*This concert is brought to you with additional support from SMTD\, the Arts Initiative\, and Office of the Provost\, Global Engagement.* \n\nAbout the William P. Malm Stearns Collection Concert Series and Instrument Preservation Fund\n\nThis concert series and fund is named in honor of the late William P. Malm\, University of Michigan Professor Emeritus of Music and past Director of the Stearns Collection of Musical Instruments. Professor Malm’s illustrious career is marked by his leading role in the early establishment of a highly ranked graduate program in ethnomusicology at the University of Michigan that continues to train generations of distinguished scholars. He is recognized internationally for nurturing and raising the stature of the Stearns Collection\, among the most diverse and extraordinary holdings of musical instruments on a university campus.
