SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:SRC Seminar Series Presents: From Evidence to Action: Precision Implementation of Classroom Physical Activity Breaks
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nWe know that classroom physical activity breaks can help children move more\, interrupt prolonged sitting\, and support learning—but knowing what works is only the beginning. The harder question is: How do we help schools consistently put evidence into practice? This talk explores the journey from evidence-based intervention to sustainable classroom practice\, drawing on the implementation of InPACT (Interrupting Prolonged Sitting with Activity) across Michigan schools. Dr. Hasson will examine why promising physical activity interventions often fall short during implementation and how implementation science can help close the gap between adoption and everyday use. She will highlight three complementary strategies—Replicating Effective Programs\, implementation teams\, and implementation facilitation—and share lessons from their application in diverse school settings. The talk will introduce a precision implementation approach: rather than assuming every school needs the same support\, implementation strategies can be stepped up according to the barriers\, resources\, and readiness of each school. Attendees will leave with practical insights into how to move beyond simply asking\, \"Does it work?\" to asking\, “What support does this setting need to make it work—and sustain it?”\n\nBio: \nDr. Rebecca Hasson is the Victor L. Katch Collegiate Professor of Kinesiology and an associate professor of Movement Science at the University of Michigan. She is a nationally recognized expert in children's health\, physical activity\, and health equity. She created InPACT and InPACT at Home to help children be more active through fun\, short activity breaks that fit easily into the school day and family routines. For more than 15 years\, Dr. Hasson has worked with schools\, healthcare providers\, and families to develop practical\, evidence-based programs that improve children's physical\, mental\, and emotional well-being. Her research is supported by the National Institutes of Health and the Michigan Health Endowment Fund\, with a focus on making healthy lifestyles more accessible for all children. Through InPACT\, her goal is to give every child the opportunity to enjoy the lifelong benefits of regular physical activity—at school\, at home\, and beyond.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MPSDS / JPSM Seminar Series - Partisan Nonresponse All the Way Down
DESCRIPTION:MPSDS / JPSM Seminar Series\nMPSDS M3 Series: Mastery\, Methodology\, Meetups.\n\nOctober 7\, 2026\n12:00 - 1:00 pm ET\nInstitute for Social Research\, Room 1070\, and via Zoom.\n\nPartisan Nonresponse All the Way Down\nSurvey weighting and quota sampling assume that the respondents in a demographic cell represent the non-respondents in that cell. Using roughly two million online survey responses across three election cycles together with a same-time\, five-firm survey experiment fielded in Spring 2024\, we show this assumption does not hold: partisan non-response operates *within* demographic cells and below them. As a result\, demographic weighting cannot remove it\; only weighting on partisanship collapses topline variance to sampling error\, and even that leaves critical subgroup estimates biased.\n\nMarc Trussler is the Director of Data Science at the University of Pennsylvania’s Program on Opinion Research and Election Studies and a Senior Elections Analyst on the NBC News Decision Desk. He received his PhD from Vanderbilt University in 2019\, and has published work on polling methodology\, political behavior\, and the media.

DESCRIPTION:October 8-9\, 2026 | Institute for Social Research\nRegister to attend at https://myumi.ch/X8V6A \n\nThe challenge: New data and approaches to study complexity in the social world has often been without a concurrent focus on the foundations of scientific inquiry\, including complex thinking\, broad causal thinking\, attention to epistemic lens\, and integrating multiple disciplinary approaches. Further\, the academic research model\, with its resource-segregated networks\, discipline-specific training\, and short-term productivity metrics\, contributes to a fragmented and potentially misleading understanding of the social world. In the second annual ISR Symposium on Complexity in the Social World\, we will use ‘place’ as the case study to facilitate discussions on rigorous social science in the public interest. \n\nUsing research on place as the case study\, discussion topics will include:\n- Complex thinking about the social world\n- The contribution of the humanities the study of the social world\n- Epistemic lens and research transparency\n- Theories\, frameworks\, and the limits of traditional causal inference\n- The draw and danger of cool new data \n- Addressing the challenges of the academic model of science\n\nPresentations on the science of place will include:\n- The relational nature of place in population social inequalities\n- The role of history in shaping place\n- The racialization of place\; the spatialization of race\n- Place as a neutral and rational driver of social inequalities\n- Approaches to testing (causal) ideas around place\n\nThe Institute for Social Research will provide 35 travel awards for early career scholars who are building a career around the interdisciplinary science of place. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:RCGD Fall Seminar Series: Global Perspectives on Culture and Health (Massy Mutumba)
DESCRIPTION:RCGD Fall 2026 Seminar Series: Global Perspectives on Culture & Health\, meets Mondays 3:30 to 5 at ISR Thompson 6050.\n\nGlobal Perspectives on Culture and Health explores fundamental aspects of human life. Culture facilitates human interaction by providing meaning to lived experience. Accounting for culture in both theories and methods potentially advances the study of health by connecting the macro and micro levels of human experience. Yet\, culture should be understood as dynamic and complex. It fundamentally shapes individuals and simultaneously is shaped by individuals. The importance of systematically attending to culture includes topics of values\, language\, immigration\, and society.\n\nTheories and methods that incorporate culture hold great potential for advancing the understanding of health outcomes and health trajectories in various global contexts.\n\nThe speakers for this series will focus on various aspects of culture and diverse groups living in the U.S. and across the globe to address the ways in which attending to culture helps clarify and overcome challenges to good health.\n\nThe Group Dynamics Seminar series is considered one of the longest running seminar series in the social sciences. It has been running uninterruptedly since it was founded by Kurt Lewin in the 1920’s in Berlin. The seminar series runs every semester on a theme chosen by faculty organizer/s who are affiliated with the Research Center for Group Dynamics at the Institute for Social Research. A very important feature of this seminar today is its interdisciplinary nature. Recent themes have included political polarization\, evolution and human behavior\, and cultural psychology.\n\nIn person: ISR Thompson 6050\, unless otherwise specified.\nOrganized by Kristine Ajrouch and Sela Panapasa\nEvents are not recorded

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Brazil at a Crossroads: Discussing the 2026 Elections
DESCRIPTION:On October 4\, 2026\, Brazil\, Latin America’s largest democracy\, will hold presidential elections. Voters will also elect members of the National Congress\, governors and vice governors\, and more than 1\,000 state legislators. The elections come at a consequential moment for Brazil\, amid concerns about corruption and inflation\, disputes over tariffs and trade\, and growing tensions with the Trump administration.\n\nThe Latin American Elections Hub (LATAM-EH) brings together a group of experts to discuss the stakes of the election for Brazil and its broader regional and international implications. The panel will analyze the results of the first round\, the factors shaping voter behavior\, and the prospects for a potential second round on October 25\, 2026.\n\nThe panelists will be Cesar Zucco (Columbia University)\, Raphael Nishimura (University of Michigan\, ISR)\, and Malu Gatto (University College London). The event chair is Pedro Luz de Castro of the University of Michigan. Edgar Franco-Vivanco\, Director of the Latin American Elections Hub\, is the discussant.\n\nThis event will be hybrid. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Effects of School Phone Bans: National Evidence from Lockable Pouches
DESCRIPTION:Schools across the United States are increasingly limiting students’ phone use during the school day. This talk examines one popular approach: lockable phone pouches. We use nationwide data from large-scale surveys\, GPS-based measures of phone activity\, standardized test scores\, school administrative records\, and sales records from the largest pouch provider.\n\nUsing a staggered difference-in-differences design\, we find that adopting phone pouches substantially reduces student phone use\, as shown by both GPS data and teacher reports. In the first year after adoption\, disciplinary incidents rise and students report lower well-being\, suggesting that schools may experience short-term disruption as students adjust. In later years\, however\, reported well-being improves and the increase in disciplinary incidents fades.\n\nWe find little evidence that phone pouches improve academic achievement overall: average effects on test scores are consistently close to zero. Effects differ somewhat by school level. High schools show modest gains\, especially in math\, while middle schools show small declines. We also find little evidence that pouch policies affect attendance\, students’ self-reported attention in class\, or perceived online bullying.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Subjective Divorce Risk\, Perceived Outside Options\, and Intra-Household Allocation
DESCRIPTION:CID Speaker Series\n\nJoin the Stone Center for Inequality Dynamics as we host Basit Zafar\, Reuben Kempf Professor of Economics in the University of Michigan’s LSA Department of Economics\, for “Subjective Divorce Risk\, Perceived Outside Options\, and Intra-Household Allocation\,” with Adeline Delavande\, Gizem Kosar\, and Alessandra Voena.\n\nAbstract: Divorce is a central source of uncertainty for married households and a key determinant of labor supply\, specialization\, savings\, and intra-household allocation. Using new survey data from married individuals and couples in the United States\, the study elicits subjective divorce risk\, expected outcomes if a marriage continues\, and expected outcomes following divorce. It documents substantial heterogeneity in perceived divorce risk\; measures expected effects on labor supply\, fertility\, health\, and within-household allocation\; and uses these expectations to inform a model of wives’ labor supply under divorce risk.\n\nPlease RSVP via the event page to save your seat.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Health Insurance\, the Affordable Care Act and Black-White Inequalities in Poverty
DESCRIPTION:CID Speaker Series\n\nJoin the Stone Center for Inequality Dynamics as we host David Brady\, professor of public policy and management at the University of Southern California Price School of Public Policy.\n\nAbstract: Black-white inequalities in poverty are large\, persistent\, and consequential. Yet little research on these inequalities incorporates health insurance into poverty measurement. Building on advances in incorporating health insurance into income\, this study tests whether valuing health insurance and Medicaid expansions through the Affordable Care Act reduced Black-white inequalities in poverty. It analyzes within-person\, within-state\, within-year variation among Black and white individuals under age 65 from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics. The findings show that augmented poverty measures produce a smaller Black-white poverty gap and that state-level Medicaid expansions significantly reduced Black poverty without affecting white poverty.\n\nDavid Brady is Professor of Public Policy & Management at the USC Price School of Public Policy. He studies poverty\, social policy\, racial inequality\, immigration\, and policymaking.\n\nPlease RSVP via the event page to save your seat.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Affirmative Action and Racial Integration
DESCRIPTION:CID Speaker Series\n\nJoin the Stone Center for Inequality Dynamics as we host Zachary Bleemer\, assistant professor of economics in Princeton University’s Industrial Relations Section. This event is jointly presented with U-M Economics – Labor Economics Seminar.\n\nAbstract: Does exposure to diverse college peers cause long-run racial integration? The study examines California Proposition 209\, which halved Black and Hispanic enrollment at many undergraduate and graduate University of California schools and improved cross-race academic match at others. Combining time-series and difference-in-differences designs with linked administrative data\, survey responses\, and complementary evidence from the UC Berkeley freshman housing lottery\, it assesses how affirmative action and interracial contact affect later-life social\, political\, and economic integration.\n\nZach Bleemer is an assistant professor of economics at Princeton University in the Industrial Relations Section and a faculty research fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research. He is a labor economist who studies American higher education.\n\nPlease RSVP via the event page to save your seat.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Strength-focused suicide prevention: Building evidence for innovation in partnership with Indigenous communities
DESCRIPTION:Suicide is an extreme act\, not a mental health disorder\, which disproportionately impacts marginalized groups. In the U.S.\, most prevention focuses mainly on psychological distress\, ignoring the patterns that emerge when considering the larger context of that tragic action. For Alaskan Native (AN) communities\, youth suicide is a striking health inequity that arose within the past century\, as colonization interrupted protective cultural resources and practices that shaped young people’s lives. Informed by decades of work with AN people\, the presentation features studies from the Research to Practice Lab at ISR’s Research Center for Group Dynamics that illustrate a broader scope of suicide prevention interventions. These projects focus on family and community strengths\, build onto local resources\, and share evidence-based research and practices that participants can use on their own terms to reduce suicide risk and promote wellbeing. Highlighting innovation in both focus and outcome measurement\, the interactive talk aims to generate questions\, dialogue and ideas for addressing the complex issue of suicide.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:RCGD Fall Seminar Series: Global Perspectives on Culture and Health (Susan Najita)
DESCRIPTION:RCGD Fall 2026 Seminar Series: Global Perspectives on Culture & Health\, meets Mondays 3:30 to 5 at ISR Thompson 6050.\n\nSusan Najita\, University of Michigan\n\nThis paper explores the establishment of Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park in the post-annexation period\, two prominent newspaper serial publications of the saga of Pele\, the goddess of the volcano\, and her sister\, Hi‘iaka\, which reinvigorated connection to the place that would be brought under federal control. What can the tale--a repository for the sacred tradition of hula pele and its healing traditions-- tell us today\, in this moment of eco-urgency\, about relationships between bodies\, mele (songs)\, and places?\n\nSusan Najita is an associate professor of English and Asian/Pacific Islander American Studies in the Department of American Culture at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor. Her first book\, Decolonizing Cultures in the Pacific\, explored the ways that indigenous Pacific writers engage the traumatic history of colonization and empire. Her current project is entitled Genealogies of Place: Colonialism\, Embodiment\, and the Making of Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park. \n\nGlobal Perspectives on Culture and Health explores fundamental aspects of human life. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Missing Results of Discrimination: A Meta-Analysis of Racial\, Gender\, and Intersectional Discrimination Using Correspondence Audits
DESCRIPTION:CID Speaker Series\n\nJoin the Stone Center for Inequality Dynamics as we host S. Michael Gaddis\, clinical associate professor of management and policy in Georgia State University’s Andrew Young School of Policy Studies.\n\nAbstract: Intersectionality theory argues that race and gender cannot be fully understood in isolation or through an additive approach. This study introduces a systematically comparative framework for identifying missing results in correspondence audits and helping scholars conduct more holistic analyses. Drawing on 52 correspondence audits encompassing nearly 330\,000 tests\, it identifies patterns that can be missed when racial and gender discrimination are analyzed separately rather than through an intersectional framework\, and offers best-practice recommendations for designing\, analyzing\, and citing correspondence audits.\n\nGaddis is a methodologist with expertise in survey and experimental design whose research advances understanding of inequality and discrimination across multiple dimensions.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:RCGD Fall Seminar Series: Global Perspectives on Culture and Health (Alice Jean Wuermli)
