RCGD Fall 2026 Seminar Series: Global Perspectives on Culture & Health, meets Mondays 3:30 to 5 at ISR Thompson 6050.

Global Perspectives on Culture and Health explores fundamental aspects of human life. Culture facilitates human interaction by providing meaning to lived experience. Accounting for culture in both theories and methods potentially advances the study of health by connecting the macro and micro levels of human experience. Yet, culture should be understood as dynamic and complex. It fundamentally shapes individuals and simultaneously is shaped by individuals. The importance of systematically attending to culture includes topics of values, language, immigration, and society.

Theories and methods that incorporate culture hold great potential for advancing the understanding of health outcomes and health trajectories in various global contexts.

The speakers for this series will focus on various aspects of culture and diverse groups living in the U.S. and across the globe to address the ways in which attending to culture helps clarify and overcome challenges to good health.

The Group Dynamics Seminar series is considered one of the longest running seminar series in the social sciences. It has been running uninterruptedly since it was founded by Kurt Lewin in the 1920’s in Berlin. The seminar series runs every semester on a theme chosen by faculty organizer/s who are affiliated with the Research Center for Group Dynamics at the Institute for Social Research. A very important feature of this seminar today is its interdisciplinary nature. Recent themes have included political polarization, evolution and human behavior, and cultural psychology.

In person: ISR Thompson 6050, unless otherwise specified.
Organized by Kristine Ajrouch and Sela Panapasa
Events are not recorded
Zoom: https://umich.zoom.us/s/93104955652?pwd=Lf6ebHXZHCdHLerJmE2pcTHPjE8iqv.1#success
Meeting ID: 931 0495 5652
Passcode: 975857

Abstract:
We study reservation wages using innovative longitudinal data on unemployment insurance (UI) recipients, guided by canonical search models. Individual-level expectations about the path of own reservation wages are, on average, consistent with realized reservation wage paths. This first result validates a basic premise in many models of job search by the unemployed. Second, individual-level reservation wages fall with unemployment duration and they fall faster when maximum unemployment benefit durations are shorter, confirming basic implications of search models. Third, unemployed job seekers reduce their reservation wages in line with predictions from calibrated versions of Mortensen’s (1977) canonical model, but set initial reservation wages too high. Fourth, reservation wages elicited early in unemployment spells are more powerful predictors of re-employment wages than are wages on the previous job, confirming the information value of survey-elicited reservation wages.

Short bio:
Pawel Krolikowski is a Senior Research Economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland. His research focuses on labor economics and macroeconomics, with particular interests in job displacement, wage adjustment, and the effects of job loss. His work has been published in the American Economic Review, American Economic Journal: Macroeconomics, Journal of International Economics, and other journals. He received his PhD in Economics from the University of Michigan and holds undergraduate degrees in economics and mathematical and computational science from Stanford University.

Schools across the United States are increasingly limiting students’ phone use during the school day. This talk examines one popular approach: lockable phone pouches. We use nationwide data from large-scale surveys, GPS-based measures of phone activity, standardized test scores, school administrative records, and sales records from the largest pouch provider.

Using a staggered difference-in-differences design, we find that adopting phone pouches substantially reduces student phone use, as shown by both GPS data and teacher reports. In the first year after adoption, disciplinary incidents rise and students report lower well-being, suggesting that schools may experience short-term disruption as students adjust. In later years, however, reported well-being improves and the increase in disciplinary incidents fades.

We find little evidence that phone pouches improve academic achievement overall: average effects on test scores are consistently close to zero. Effects differ somewhat by school level. High schools show modest gains, especially in math, while middle schools show small declines. We also find little evidence that pouch policies affect attendance, students’ self-reported attention in class, or perceived online bullying.

Events are not recorded",

Accounting for culture in both theories and methods potentially advances the study of health by connecting the macro and micro levels of human experience.
Suicide is an extreme act, not a mental health disorder, which disproportionately impacts marginalized groups. In the U.S., most prevention focuses mainly on psychological distress, ignoring the patterns that emerge when considering the larger context of that tragic action. For Alaskan Native (AN) communities, youth suicide is a striking health inequity that arose within the past century, as colonization interrupted protective cultural resources and practices that shaped young people’s lives. Informed by decades of work with AN people, the presentation features studies from the Research to Practice Lab at ISR’s Research Center for Group Dynamics that illustrate a broader scope of suicide prevention interventions. These projects focus on family and community strengths, build onto local resources, and share evidence-based research and practices that participants can use on their own terms to reduce suicide risk and promote wellbeing. Highlighting innovation in both focus and outcome measurement, the interactive talk aims to generate questions, dialogue and ideas for addressing the complex issue of suicide.
RCGD Fall 2026 Seminar Series: Global Perspectives on Culture & Health, meets Mondays 3:30 to 5 at ISR Thompson 6050.

Susan Najita, University of Michigan

This paper explores the establishment of Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park in the post-annexation period, two prominent newspaper serial publications of the saga of Pele, the goddess of the volcano, and her sister, Hi‘iaka, which reinvigorated connection to the place that would be brought under federal control. What can the tale--a repository for the sacred tradition of hula pele and its healing traditions-- tell us today, in this moment of eco-urgency, about relationships between bodies, mele (songs), and places?

Susan Najita is an associate professor of English and Asian/Pacific Islander American Studies in the Department of American Culture at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Her first book, Decolonizing Cultures in the Pacific, explored the ways that indigenous Pacific writers engage the traumatic history of colonization and empire. Her current project is entitled Genealogies of Place: Colonialism, Embodiment, and the Making of Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park.

In person: ISR Thompson 1430, unless otherwise specified.
Organized by Kristine Ajrouch and Sela Panapasa
Events are not recorded, but as permissions allow, interviews with speakers are later posted to our YouTube playlist.",
