SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:MICDE State of AI: End-to-End Computational Scientific Discovery
DESCRIPTION:This special event will present a recent breakthrough by professors Kai Sun (Physics) and Venkat Viswanathan (Aerospace). Fractional Chern insulators are exotic topological states of matter that host anyons\, a proposed foundation for fault-tolerant quantum computing\, but their small energy gaps confine them to extremely low temperatures. The team asked frontier AI models to propose a new theoretical framework for topological flat bands\, then set a swarm of agents to explore it\, coordinating only through a shared message board\, with every candidate checked by GPU-accelerated exact diagonalization. The swarm found a surprise: departing from the “ideal” quantum geometry long considered optimal raised the many-body gap more than tenfold over the starting bands\, well past the previous benchmark and beyond what agents working alone reached. AI-assisted analysis then distilled this into a simple sheared Landau level model that explains the mechanism (reshaped electron orbitals stiffen the short-range repulsion protecting the state) and yields a design index computable without many-body simulation. Proposing the hypothesis\, searching it\,  explaining what it found\, and presenting a model offers an early look at end-to-end scientific discovery with AI.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:SciFM27 Conference
DESCRIPTION:#SciFM27 will focus on how foundation models and agentic AI are opening a new frontier for scientific innovation\, one that demands capabilities beyond those built for general-purpose language and consumer applications. Scientific AI must reason across equations\, code\, simulations\, and experimental and observational data\; integrate multiple modalities\; interact with specialized tools\, instruments\, and computational systems\; and carry out complex\, multi-step workflows with high reliability. The frontier is shifting from prediction to agency: systems that plan and execute multi-step workflows\, propose and test hypotheses\, and close the loop between models\, computation\, experiments\, and real-world data.\n \n#SciFM27 brings together leading companies with scientists\, engineers\, clinicians\, national laboratories\, and government to explore advances in scientific foundation models\, scientific reasoning and agentic systems\, AI-enabled experimentation and therapeutic discovery\, and the computational infrastructure needed to build and deploy these systems at scale.\n\nOne of the main themes of #SciFM27 will be on therapeutics. Bringing a new medicine from discovery through clinical development and regulatory approval takes 10 to 15 years and costs more than $2 billion\, while roughly 90 percent of drug candidates entering clinical trials fail to gain approval\, a rate unchanged in 40 years. Recent advances have created opportunities to connect knowledge and data across physics\, chemistry\, biology\, and medicine\; generate and evaluate new therapeutic hypotheses\; integrate computational and experimental workflows\; and improve how potential medicines are designed and tested.
