As the country heads into the 2026 midterm elections, the University of Michigan welcomes journalist Osita Nwanevu, contributing editor at The New Republic and columnist at The Guardian, for a public conversation with Elizabeth Anderson, the John Dewey Distinguished University Professor of Philosophy.

The evening centers on Nwanevu's new book, The Right of the People: Democracy and the Case for a New American Founding, which argues that America's democratic troubles run deeper than any single election. The real problem, Nwanevu contends, lies in institutions that were never designed to let majorities govern, and in an economy that keeps power far from ordinary people.

Anderson, one of the country's most influential political philosophers, brings her own work on democracy, equality, and the workplace to the exchange. Together they take up the questions this election season keeps surfacing. Who really holds power in America? Why do so many people feel unheard, and what would it take to build a democracy worthy of the name?

The conversation is free and open to students, faculty, and the broader Ann Arbor community, with time for audience questions.

Schedule

*Graduate student workshop with Osita*
Ross School of Business, room sent to registrants.
2:00 to 3:30 pm
Sign up: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfp8sfCKgchUYJxep4UtwYVBAGXcdZLOLV-M8ozfZJE1lf7VQ/viewform

*Main Event*
Friday, October 9, 2026
Ross School of Business, Robertson Auditorium

5:30 pm Doors open, light refreshments in the lobby, and pickup of pre-ordered books.
6:00 pm The program begins, including questions and answers at the end.
7:30 pm Refreshments and book signing in the lobby until 8:00 pm.

RSVP -- free, but please sign up to help us plan refreshments: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc3_b6m_2cOK6JzOtUdZQSsU4f1ma7wH6pCxY25x3_Pu5ldDg/viewform

Books: Ross doesn't allow sales on site, so pre-order "The Right of the People" (https://literatibookstore.com/book/9780593449929) and "Hijacked" (https://literatibookstore.com/book/9781009275392) from Literati by Thursday, Oct. 8 and pick up your copy at the event.

Can't make it in person?
Picturing Aura (MIT Press 2025) is a historical, anthropological, and philosophical study of modern efforts to visualize that hidden, radiant force that envelops the living body and is known as the aura. This book traces the rise and global spread of modern instruments and techniques for visualizing auras, from the late nineteenth century to the present day, exploring how pictures of aura have been put to work in diverse domains of psychical and parapsychological research, esotericism and occultism, art photography, and popular culture, as well as the New Age market for alternative medicine and spiritual well-being. These histories—sometimes complementary, sometimes conflicting—shaped by exchanges between professionals and amateurs, scientists and occultists, countercultural artists and entrepreneurs, metropolitan figures and peripheral actors, show how the aura functions as a boundary object: an ontologically plural entity amenable to the varied tasks of creating art, healing bodies, and mapping a hidden cosmos. My presentation will introduce some of the book’s key figures, technologies, and notable migrations of images, while reflecting on the very endeavour of making the aura visible and the challenges it poses to established assumptions about science, religion, and art.

Jeremy Stolow is Professor of Communication Studies at Concordia University in Montréal, Canada. He works in the interdisciplinary field of “religion and media,” where he conducts research on the religious, esoteric, and occult dimensions of technology, as well as the technological and material dimensions of religion. In addition to Picturing Aura, his publications include Orthodox by Design (California UP, 2010), a study of contemporary Orthodox Jewish print culture and its political implications; Deus in Machina (Fordham UP, 2013), an edited volume exploring the relationship between religion and technology from a historical and transcultural perspective; as well as several co-edited journal issues focusing on the genealogy of animation, religious visibility and invisibility, and “light” as a medium of religious practice and imagination.
Industrial capitalism engendered human and animal bodies toxic in myriad and uneven ways. This talk examines the entanglements of public health and the body through the history of carbolic acid. Derived from coal tar production in British industrial factories in the early 19th century, carbolic acid exploded in use from the 1870s after Joseph Lister’s pioneering use of the chemical in antiseptic surgery. Heralded as the first public health and surgical 'magic bullet', chemists and coroners clamored to legislate carbolic acid as a dangerous poison- by 1900 carbolic acid poisonings and suicides were significant causes of death around the Atlantic World. By the early 20th century, carbolic acid became a common household tool in the fight against germs and in the beauty industry. Looming was the nature of risk. I show how exposure to carbolic acid skin damage and death differentially impacted women and laborers, particularly in the Global South. Carbolic acid's use in the plastics industry, and as an insecticide led to a surge in production in the 20th century, including widespread water and soil pollution. This talk thus explores questions about risk and regulation, the unequal burdens of toxicity, and the longue durée invisible health impacts of chemicals.

Jacob Steere-Williams, PhD, is professor of history and medical humanities at the College of Charleston, and Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. He serves as Associate Editor of the Journal of the History of Medicine and Allied Sciences, and Editor of the Epidemic Histories book series with Johns Hopkins University Press. His work explores the history of public health, epidemic disease, and the environment, interrogating questions about disease surveillance, governance, and everyday scientific practice in Britain, across the Atlantic World, and the former British colonies. In addition to dozens of articles and op-eds, he is the author of the 2020 book The Filth Disease and the 2023 Port Cities of the Atlantic World.
This talk examines how different social and technological bodies—including e-waste workers, environmental scientists, and E-noses—perceive and engage with the pervasive toxic smell in Guiyu, an e-waste recycling hub in China severely affected by the chemical pollution produced through e-waste processing. The residual smell of crude e-waste recycling practices functions as a sensory modality that traces the environmental violence of the global e-waste economy. It exemplifies what I call ""secondhand extraction"": a form of extraction within the recycling economy that not only generates but also mediates an alternative, secondary, yet equally powerful set of material, environmental, and political relations.

I argue that the concept of environmental sensitivity is key to understanding both the lived experience of chemical saturation and China’s model of environmental governance as it takes on distinct meanings across contexts. On the one hand, it refers to a subjective, bodily quality—the degree of sensitivity of one’s olfactory faculties. On the other, it operates as a scientific metric for measuring a community’s vulnerability to environmental hazards, which in turn shapes the state distribution of land use and ownership. To grasp the complexities of local environmental politics in China, we must understand how these two layers of sensitivity, bodily and bureaucratic, intertwine paradoxically.

Tinghao Zhou is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Michigan Society of Fellows and Assistant Professor of Film, Television, and Media at the University of Michigan. He received his Ph.D. in Film and Media Studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara. His research focuses on the intersections of media theory, environmental humanities and justice, science and technology studies, critical infrastructure studies, and digital cultures in China and beyond. His current book project, _At the Ends of Media_, explores the material and political impacts of the global media economy on local communities, labor conditions, and ecologies. He currently serves as Associate and Review Editor of _Media+Environment_.
The post-pandemic explosion of work-from-home arrangements is often credited with the rise of "mouse jigglers," devices or programs that simulate user input, allowing workers to evade surveillance by their managers. But the history of pretending to use computers is nearly as long as the history of actually using them. This talk traces the genealogy of techniques for simulating computer use, ranging from coffee mugs set on keyboards to AI agents granted root-level privileges. These techniques have evolved in parallel with new methods and motives for detecting computer use—most conspicuously, efforts to assess whether users are paying attention by conflating their attention with the activity of the machines they use. The ubiquity of simulated computer use raises questions about the units in which the attention economy is denominated.

Nick Seaver is Associate Professor of Anthropology at Tufts University, where he also directs the program in Science, Technology & Society. His research examines the relationship between cultural concepts and technological practices, particularly in computational settings. He is co-editor of Towards an Anthropology of Data (2021) and the author of Computing Taste: Algorithms and the Makers of Music Recommendation (2022), an ethnographic study of music recommender system developers. He is currently writing a book on the meaning and measurement of attention and developing a project on the anthropology of contraptions.
In 1966, Japan’s Overseas Technical Cooperation Agency (OTCA) established an office for “medical cooperation,” which recruited Japanese medical schools to participate in international aid projects to strengthen scientific, as well as political, ties with countries across Asia and Africa. Gifu University Medical School was selected to work in Iran, launching a flow of Japanese personnel and scientific equipment to the laboratories of Tehran University. While Iranian scientists were primarily interested in receiving technical aid, Japanese scientists were eager to conduct joint fieldwork projects. The organization of a joint expedition to northern Iran in 1972 exposed a series of tensions in the Japanese-Iranian collaboration. The team eventually collected blood samples from thousands of Iranian villagers to screen them for pathologies. Then, most of these blood samples were shipped to Japan, where they had a surprising afterlife. Circulating through laboratories in Tokyo, Nagasaki, and Osaka, the Iranian blood was incorporated into a research project to analyze genetic variation within Japan’s own population, and data from the samples featured in Japanese publications hypothesizing about the origins of the Japanese race. Meanwhile, in publications with Iranian co-authors, the meaning of the genetic data had to be re-negotiated according to Iranian understandings of racial identity.

Elise K. She is the author of Genetic Crossroads: The Middle East and the Science of Human Heredity (Stanford University Press, 2021). She is currently working on multiple projects examining the history of 20th-century scientific collaborations across Asia and the Middle East, including the history of Japanese archaeological and genetic expeditions in West Asia, the linked histories of physical anthropology in India and Iran, and the history of ancient DNA studies in Egypt. She is also one of the co-editors of Isis, the flagship journal of the History of Science Society.",
