This lecture surveys the current state of endangered dialects in Japan and introduces a range of efforts to document and pass them on to future generations. Moreover, because fine examples of lacquer and silk have actually survived from that time, we can see what other materials copied from them. But the only reason we can recognize borrowings is that each material has a character of its own. The lecture will explore this two-sided phenomenon\u2014the individual character of each workshop tradition and the exchanges between workshops\u2014by looking at inlaid bronzes, mirrors, jades, lacquers, and silks, using the problem of designing for a circular space as a case study to infer the thinking of designers working in each medium.\n\nWang Haicheng is Mary and Cheney Cowles Endowed Professor of Chinese art at the University of Washington, Seattle. His research interest focuses on the comparative study of the art and archaeology of early China. In the wake of the international order\u2019s dismantling and the ruinous acceleration of techno-capitalism, social discontent has been channeled into extreme nationalisms that promise a \u2018homecoming\u2019 at the expense of outsiders, immigrants, refugees. Adding to these woes, intellectual efforts to challenge the \u2018dogmatic images\u2019 of thinking that have ruled by elevating particular epistemologies to the level of \u2018global thought,\u2019 are being increasingly stymied by capitulant institutions. Yet, it is precisely in such precarious times that cross-cultural thinking seems more necessary than ever, not least as an antidote to the ongoing segregation of knowledges and thought-systems currently underway.\n \t\nThis conference is part of a series of events organized under the Geophilosophies initiative. As a project Geophilosophies not only calls attention to thought-systems that continue to be erased, discredited, or ignored by dominant cultures, but more importantly, encourages the kind of deep conceptual encounter between different traditions of thought with the capacity to effect real psychic, social and ecological change. We define cross-cultural thinking as the kind of engagement that strives for maximum communication, unlike the concept of \u2018border crossing\u2019 which we see as a vestige of nation-state sovereignty. Thus defined, cross-cultural thinking is transversal and ecosophical by nature, inasmuch as it strives for modes of thinking grounded in lived practices and experiences that effortlessly bring incompatible concepts and entities into new associations characterized by their mutual self-transformation. On this note, we invite presentations that re-examine unexplored avenues in cross-cultural philosophical thinking, aiming to repair fractured connections between self, society and world amid today\u2019s global turmoil. We are particularly interested in experimental methodologies that explore: (i) the nature of contact zones between concepts, praxes, and worldviews; (ii) the co-imbrication of one\u2019s subjectivity in cross-cultural encounters. As an important medium through which kin-based, territorial, and cosmological rights and responsibilities continue to be expressed, rivers connect ancestral Ainu lifeways with visions of an Indigenous future. In their struggles for Indigenous rights today, Ainu activists continue to focus on rivers as the central locus of Ainu sovereignty and the origin from which Ainu cultural and territorial rights emerge, envisioning and enacting futures of flourishing and abundance that are rooted in ancestral relationships to their native lands and waters and the more-than-human beings who inhabit them. In so doing, they insist upon a future for the Ainu as an Indigenous people, challenging Japan\u2019s ongoing settler-colonial structure of Ainu dispossession and elimination.\n\nDr. Michael J. Ioannides is a teaching postdoctoral fellow at the University of Michigan Center for Japanese Studies. He received his Ph.D. in cultural anthropology from the University of California Santa Barbara, in June 2026, with an interdisciplinary emphasis on environment and society. Lu Xun famously described Ming and Qing novels that abounded with super-mobile human characters as \u201csupernatural\u201d fiction (shenmo xiaoshuo \u795e\u9b54\u5c0f\u8aaa). Dr. Kile departs from this foundational paradigm to look more precisely: what terms do these novels use for moving through air, and how did that relate to water travel? The depths of the seas and the heights of the skies did not function as media for actually existing humans in the early modern period, but in the fiction of the time, humans could travel through the sea, both across its surfaces and through its depths, as well as through the sky in all its vastness.\n\nSE Kile is a scholar of early modern Chinese literature and cultural history, focusing on the intersections of multimedia practice across a broad range of cultural objects, from poetry to props, from novels to gardens. An associate professor in the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of Michigan, Kile\u2019s first book, *Towers in the Void: Li Yu and Early Modern Chinese Media* (Columbia, 2023), theorizes early modern mediation and entrepreneurship through Li Yu's cultural production across the areas of playwriting, fiction writing, garden and architectural design, theater direction, and body modification. Originally from Japan and based in Norway, she holds a Ph.D. in community planning and cultural understanding from UiT \u2013 The Arctic University of Norway, where her research explored urban Indigenous identity and contemporary Ainu perspectives. Uzawa works across contemporary dance, film, animation, installation, and socially engaged art, and her work has been exhibited and performed internationally. She is currently an invited faculty member at Hokkaido University, an affiliated researcher at the University of Oslo, and a guest curator at the University of Michigan Museum of Art and the J\u00f3zef Pi\u0142sudski Museum. It does so by examining the life and intellectual biography of Syed Abid Husain (1896\u20131978), drawing upon his extensive corpus of works \u2013 including translations from German into Urdu, creative literary writings, and educational and political activism at Jamia Millia Islamia \u2013 to paint a portrait of a nationalist Indian Muslim in colonial and postcolonial India. Moving beyond the framework of nationalist history and adopting a global intellectual history approach, my lecture aims to expand our geographical and conceptual understanding of ideas by mapping what I call the minor cosmopolitanisms of Husain\u2019s intellectual journeys. I argue that Husain\u2019s engagement with both German majoritarian and minority thought worlds offer valuable insights into the minority not merely as a political category but also as an intellectual and ethical one. Ultimately, I contend that Husain\u2019s life and writings provide unique insight on both the crises facing democracy and the potential for critical secularism and minority thought in an era dominated by majoritarian nationalism.\n\nDr. Razak Khan is a senior research fellow in global history at the Department of History, Free University, Berlin. He is part of the European Research Council funded project \u201cUnfamiliar: Family, Law, and Democracy in South Asia.\u201d It looks at the intersection of religion, gender and sexual minorities, and family law on the issues of marriage, adoption, and inheritance. His monograph *Minority Pasts: Locality, Emotions, and Belonging in Rampur* was published by (Oxford University Press, 2022). He also edited the English translation edition of *The Incomparable Festival* (Penguin Random House India, 2021) and co-edited *Nodes of Translation: Intellectual History between Modern India and Germany* (De Gruyter, 2024). Counter to the \"romantic\" Silk Road imagery the BRI commonly draws on, these activities are forcing a reconfiguration of political and economic realities across the region, shifting attention toward changing practices of digital economy and governance along the BRI. This paper introduces the concept of 'variegated govotolerance' to explain why governments and citizens have (to varying degrees) come to tolerate, regional cybercriminal activity linked to Chinese actors.\n\nTom Narins is an associate professor of geography, planning, and sustainability at the University at Albany with research interests in the critical geopolitics of China's growing engagement with the global economy.\nHis current research examines the political and economic tensions associated with \u201cGlobal China\u201d in terms of both traditional and digital infrastructure, with a special focus on China\u2019s digital expansion across the Global South. As a political and economic geographer, Tom has published on sovereignty issues relating to China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) as well as on official Chinese lending to BRI-participant countries after the coronavirus pandemic. But they all exhibit an acute fascination with founding Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, invoking select strands of his political thought and practice to legitimate their own political projects or imaginaries. Yet, while interest in Lee outside of Singapore is consistently growing, within Singaporean society there is a growing sense of exhaustion and indifference in appealing to his figure \u2013 especially when it is perceived as a cynical means to derive political profit for his long-ruling People\u2019s Action Party (PAP). Using this observation as a launching pad, this lecture explores the contradictions of Lee\u2019s legacy and develops rudiments to pursue a global history of Lee Kuan Yew, bringing his international reception and footprints within a single frame. This entails treating Lee as a global figure of world-historical importance, situating his political thought, movements, and interventions within global trends and networks. While this global approach magnifies Lee\u2019s stature, it also amplifies the less comfortable aspects of his legacy: his \u201coriginal sin\u201d is no longer the detention without trial, but his role in legitimizing the bloody Vietnam War. A global history of Lee thereby presents intensified contradictions to grapple with.\n\nQuah Say Jye is a Klarman Postdoctoral Fellow at Cornell University. As a heritage site, the Memorial Park for Women Laborers elucidates how \u201chistory\u201d and \u201cmemory\u201d are not simply about the past but part of a forward-looking process that emerges from the social, political, and economic needs of the present, legitimized and validated through its associations with the past.\n\nA cultural anthropologist, Anru Lee's research focuses on the Asian Pacific region and issues of capitalism, modernity, gender and sexuality, and urban anthropology. She is the author of *In the Name of Harmony and Prosperity: Labor and Gender Politics in Taiwan's Economic Restructuring* and *Haunted Modernities: Gender, Memory, and Placemaking in Postindustrial Taiwan* and is co-editor of *Women in the New Taiwan: Gender Roles and Gender Consciousness in a Changing Society*, *Why Taiwan? Anthropological Perspectives*, and *Brill Encyclopedia of Taiwan Studies* (The Gender and Women's Studies Section). She is currently working on a book manuscript that investigates mass rapid transit systems as related to issues of technology, governance, and citizenship. Drawing on more than three decades of artistic practice between New York and Japan, Yasuko Yokoshi reflects on how choreography, Nihon Buyo, and Noh have continually reshaped her body and artistic practice. Through performance examples and the ongoing dojojiproject, the lecture considers transformation not as the opposite of the archive, but as the very condition through which dance survives.\n\nYasuko Yokoshi is a choreographer and dancer whose work explores embodied transmission, dance lineage, and the unstable nature of dance as a living archive. Based in New York from 1996 to 2015, she received two New York Dance and Performance \u201cBessie\u201d Awards (2003, 2006), a Guggenheim Fellowship, a NYFA Artist Fellowship, support from Creative Capital, and a Foundation for Contemporary Arts Award. At the same time, the vast majority of visitors to China during the Mao years came from China\u2019s diaspora, which officials referred to as \u201canother province overseas\u201d that could contribute to the economic and political foundations of the new nation. This talk will examine the challenges faced by China\u2019s state tourism officials in promoting foreign and diaspora tourism as a form of public diplomacy and economic development from the founding of the PRC to the Cultural Revolution.\n\nGavin Healy is a center associate of the Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies at the University of Michigan and has taught Chinese history at Columbia University and the State University of New York. This talk reevaluates the history of Japanese food culture by examining how ideas of healthy eating became both a popular phenomenon and a matter of grave concern among trained medical experts and amateur culinary enthusiasts alike. It explores why ordinary people ate what they did, how these ideas on proper eating came to be, and what social, economic, and moral concerns propelled their rise. Guidance on dietetics conveyed priorities about how well-nourished bodies were meant to act in the world, whether as agricultural workers, samurai bureaucrats, or merchant consumers. Failure to keep a proper diet carried life-or-death consequences, according to these guides, that could bring not just disease to oneself but financial and moral ruin to one\u2019s household, domain, or even society at large. This study of historical nourishment modes in Japan thus reveals an early modern dietetic revolution in the making, which disrupted older forms of expertise and provided a venue to critique official policies on eating and living right before the introduction of modern scientific nutrition.\n\nJoshua Schlachet is a historian of Japan, specializing in the cultural history of nourishment in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. His new book, *Nourishing Life: Cultures of Food and Health in Early Modern Japan* (University of Hawai\u02bbi Press, 2026), examines how the emergence of a dietary common knowledge expanded concepts of a well-nourished body to encompass economic productivity, status hierarchy, and moral cultivation. Schlachet is co-editor of *Interdisciplinary Edo: Towards an Integrated Approach to Early Modern Japan* (Routledge, 2024), a collected volume of innovative humanistic research on society and culture in the Tokugawa era. Using a CES production framework with firm-specific distortions, the talk introduces a novel decomposition of aggregate TFP growth into efficient growth and changes in misallocation. The analysis documents a sharp slowdown in Chinese manufacturing productivity growth after 2010, driven both by weaker incumbent-firm productivity growth and by a diminished contribution from firm turnover and reallocation. \n\nLoren Brandt is a professor of economics at the University of Toronto specializing in the Chinese economy. He has published widely on the Chinese economy in leading economic journals including the *American Economic Review*, *the Quarterly Journal of Economics*, *Review of Economic Studies*, *Econometrica and the Journal of Political Economy*, and been involved in extensive household and enterprise survey work in both China and Vietnam. With Thomas Rawski, he completed *Policy, Regulation, and Innovation in China\u2019s Electricity and Telecom Industries* (Cambridge University Press, 2019), an interdisciplinary effort analyzing the effect of government policy on the power and telecom sectors in China.
