In his essay, \u201cEducation as a Space to Change Your Mind,\u201d philosopher Troy Jollimore reminds us of Socrates\u2019 commitment to open-mindedness: \u201cIt requires that we work toward developing a sense of the world as a vast and complex place that we can, and ought to, continue to learn about for the rest of our lives.\u201d\n\nOffered in this spirit of intellectual humility, to support the principles of academic freedom, and to develop a campus climate comfortable with hearing different well-informed points of view, even those counter to one\u2019s own views, the lunchtime series will take place on the Diag throughout the Fall. This lecture is sponsored by the Faculty Senate as a showcase event underscoring the U-M community\u2019s collective interest in academic freedom.\n\nThe invited speaker is Michael Ignatieff, who served as President and Rector of Central European University (CEU) between 2016 and 2021, the turbulent years which saw CEU\u2019s expulsion from Budapest and its re-establishment in Vienna. He now is a professor in CEU\u2019s department of historical studies. Ignatieff came to CEU after serving as Edward R. Murrow Chair of Press, Politics, and Public Policy at Harvard University\u2019s John F. Kennedy School of Government.\n\nAbstract:\n\nIn 2017, Central European University in Budapest became the first free institution in Europe to be targeted by an authoritarian populist regime. Michael Ignatieff was Rector of CEU and led the fight against Victor Orban\u2019s campaign to declare the university illegal and then have it expelled. Orban\u2019s eventual victory\u2014successfully forcing the university to relocate to Vienna\u2014set the pattern for the attacks on \u2018woke\u2019 \u2018liberal\u2019 institutions in the United States.
