This aid provides Palestinians with essential tools for survival and resilience, yet it has also entrenched Israeli colonial control.\n\nIn his new book \u201cIn a Land of Aid,\u201d Sa\u2019ed Atshan traces how humanitarianism has become the dominant lens through which Palestinian life is now governed. Drawing on the new co-authored volume, *Heritage Forensics: Cultural on the Front Lines of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Conflict*, the presentation examines how cultural sites became entangled in the conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh during the interwar period (1994-2020). The talk considers how satellite-based heritage forensics is being deployed prospectively, to monitor hundreds of Armenian sites in Karabakh following Azerbaijan's 2023 takeover of the region and the displacement of its Armenian population. In doing so, it asks: how can satellite-based monitoring function as a form of \"counter-forensics,\" turning surveillance technologies developed for military purposes back on the state? Can heritage forensics move us beyond retrospective documentation to actively deter erasure and support truth, reconciliation, and accountability wherever cultural heritage is at stake?\n\nLori Khatchadourian is Professor of Near Eastern Studies and Anthropology at Cornell University, and co-founder and co-director of Caucasus Heritage Watch. She currently serves as Director of the Cornell Institute of Archaeology and Material Studies. Khatchadourian\u2019s research spans the fields of archaeology, social anthropology, and heritage studies, with a particular focus on Armenia, the wider South Caucasus, and neighboring regions. Current projects explore the archaeology of modernity, including problems of genocide, deindustrialization, and the entanglements of cultural heritage and war. She is the co-author of *Heritage Forensics: Culture on the Front Lines of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Conflict* (Cornell, 2026) and author of Imperial Matter: Ancient Persia and the Archaeology of Empires (UC Press, 2016). Due to the stigma frequently associated with hybrid English (Lambert 2018, Schneider 2016), connotations associated with these terms are predominantly negative, aligning with prevalent language purism ideologies or deficit-based language ideologies of language mixing as poor or broken English. Awareness and understanding of such language ideologies is critical to Native American language contexts, as without this knowledge \u201cscholars and researchers-both Native and non-Native-cannot hope to understand Native American languages and the ways speakers use them, change them, and renew them.\u201d(Kroskrity & Field 2009:10)\n\nIn this talk, I present one part of my larger dissertation study on bilingual language practices and ideologies in Zuni Pueblo, New Mexico. My analysis focuses on language ideologies towards Zunglish, or language mixing involving Zuni and English, expressed during interviews with adult participants of various ages and with various levels of ability in the Zuni language. I show that some of the participants express ideologies of deficiency and language purism toward Zunglish, while others view language mixing as a necessity and as a reflection of hon a:wan A:shiwi \u2018our Zuni people\u2019 living in two worlds. I conclude by reflecting on how these ideologies can hinder community members, in particular younger generations, from speaking Zuni and how valuing rather than disparaging bilingual practices is essential to creating the conditions for A:shiwi who wish to gain confidence in using the language.\n\nReferences:\nBullock, Barbara E., and Almeida Jacqueline Toribio, eds. 2009.
