Starting from these trees and their relationship to time, this presentation elucidates the relationship between fruit production and violence at the end of empire. Many who planted the trees left\u2014or were forced to leave\u2014and newly settled people\u2014many of them refugees themselves\u2014came to care for these living relics of past social worlds. Through apricots, figs, grapes, hazelnuts, olives, and pistachios, the project places displaced people and their rootedness in the face of uprooting at the center, and suggests their role in Turkey\u2019s world-leading production of these commodities today. \n\nSamuel Dolbee is an environmental historian of the modern Middle East, and an assistant professor at Vanderbilt University. His first book Locusts of Power was the co-winner of the 2024 Ottoman and Turkish Studies Association Book Prize. His work has appeared in American Historical Review, Comparative Studies of Society and History, Environmental History, Journal of Global History, and Past & Present among other places. With Martin Luther King, Jr.\u2019s \u201cI Have a Dream Speech\u201d as one of the most recognizable moments of the event, the depth and the nuance of the March on Washington and the movement that shaped has rarely surfaced among and academic and popular discourse. With attention to widening the frame in which to analyze the 1963 March on Washington, historian Marcia Chatelain offers a new reading of the March from the vantage point of the gender dynamics that undoubtedly shaped it.\n\nMarcia Chatelain is the Penn Presidential Compact Professor of Africana Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. A historian of African-American life and culture, Dr. Chatelain has taught at the University of Oklahoma and Georgetown University. Situating these contemporary struggles within a broader historical perspective, however, reveals that gendered childhood, as a concept and social project, has long served as a site onto which collective fears, social aspirations, and competing visions of citizenship and belonging are projected. Indeed, Marcia Chatelain's work has shown that, during the Great Migration, Black girlhood in Chicago\u2019s South Side represented a potential path to social mobility, even as it was undermined by indiscriminate lynchings, labor demands in an expanding commercial market, a punitive judicial system, and sexual victimization. This scholarship raises important historical and methodological questions, such as: Who is afforded the innocence and vulnerability of childhood? In what ways have race, gender, and class together impacted public discourses regarding what it means to be a \u201cgood citizen\u201d? Sundown towns excluded Black people, and in some cases, Chinese Americans, Jewish people, Native Americans, Latinas\/os and other racialized groups. Since the 19th century these towns have been prevalent throughout the U.S. and especially in the Midwest, West, and East.\n\nThese policies did not completely disappear over time. The attitudes that drove them morphed into housing \u201ccovenants,\u201d redlining, discrimination within the post-war FHA and discrimination in the granting of bank loans. The results of these decisions and policies haunt our country to this very day. *Don\u2019t Let the Sun* will shine a light on this difficult chapter in America\u2019s ever-expanding history, and help audiences engage productively with \u201chard\u201d histories.\n\nMr. Loewen\u2019s *Sundown Towns: A Hidden Dimension of American Racism* is the definitive history of these phenomena. Two features of this social world\u2014interracial sexual relationships between African women and European men and the concomitant growth of an Afro-European population that remained embedded in African society\u2014were key drivers of the process of racialization unleashed by the transatlantic slave trade. This process would evolve over the course of four centuries in ways that gave Afro-European men the social positionality, financial resources, and political impetus to be the first founders of African-owned newspapers in colonial Ghana. Their newspapers reveal a late-nineteenth-century West African epistemology of blackness that stretched beyond its elite (primarily) Afro-European origins as literacy rates grew, newspaper publishing expanded, and the language of race became a politically consequential medium in the twentieth century that enabled dissent and shaped how Africans in the colony\u2019s growing public sphere debated and fought for political futures defined not by their colonizers, but by themselves.\n\nCarina Ray is a scholar of race and sexuality; comparative colonialisms and nationalisms; migration and maritime history; print cultures; bodily aesthetics, and the relationship between race, ethnicity, and political power. Ray\u2019s research is primarily focused on Ghana and its diasporas. She is the author of Crossing the Color Line: Race, Sex, and the Contested Politics of Colonialism in Ghana, winner of the American Historical Association's 2016 Wesley-Logan Book Prize and the African Studies Association's 2017 Aidoo-Snyder Book Prize. Her articles have appeared in Gender and History, PMLA, The Journal of West African History, and The American Historical Review, among others. She is series co-editor of New African Histories (Ohio University Press) with Jacob Dlamini and Derek Peterson, and African Identities: Past and Present (Cambridge University Press) with Toyin Falola.
