"description":"As the country heads into the 2026 midterm elections, the University of Michigan welcomes journalist Osita Nwanevu, contributing editor at The New Republic and columnist at The Guardian, for a public conversation with Elizabeth Anderson, the John Dewey Distinguished University Professor of Philosophy.\n\nThe evening centers on Nwanevu's new book, The Right of the People: Democracy and the Case for a New American Founding, which argues that America's democratic troubles run deeper than any single election. The real problem, Nwanevu contends, lies in institutions that were never designed to let majorities govern, and in an economy that keeps power far from ordinary people.\n\nAnderson, one of the country's most influential political philosophers, brings her own work on democracy, equality, and the workplace to the exchange. Together they take up the questions this election season keeps surfacing. Who really holds power in America? Why do so many people feel unheard, and what would it take to build a democracy worthy of the name?\n\nThe conversation is free and open to students, faculty, and the broader Ann Arbor community, with time for audience questions.\n\nSchedule\n\nFriday, October 9, 2026 at Ross School of Business, Room TBD\n\n5:30 pm Doors open, light refreshments and Literati book sales in the lobby.\n6:00 pm The program begins, including questions and answers at the end. \n7:30 pm Refreshments and book signing \/ sales in the lobby until 8:00 pm.\n\n\nSponsors and Partners\n\nU-M Department of Philosophy; Energy Club at Ross; Rackham Graduate School; Poverty Solutions; Business+Impact at Ross; Wallace House; Institute for the Humanities; U-M Department of History; U-M Department of English Language & Literature; Ford School of Public Policy; Center for Positive Organizations; Center for Political Studies; U-M Department of Political Science; Michigan Law; the Philosophy, Politics, and Economics Program; Science, Technology & Society; Science, Technology & Public Policy at the Ford School; the Erb Institute; Net Impact; and U-M Department of Sociology.",

Faculty fellows at the Institute for the Humanities will discuss a part of their current project in a short talk followed by a Q & A session.\n\nAbout this talk:\nThis talk illuminates the contradictory racial politics of late nineteenth-century African-owned newspapers by analyzing how Fante and Ga pressmen, who positioned themselves as African defenders of African interests, deployed racist depictions of the Asante empire in an effort to solicit British protection. This Faustian bargain backfired and when British protection led to colonial conquest, these same newspapers mobilized race as the primary language of political dissent against British rule.\n\nCarina Ray is a 2026-27 Helmut F. "description":"The field of medieval environmental history has grown immensely from its inception 30 years ago. While scholars of the classical past and modern period registered environmental changes made by their powerful states a little earlier, the topic caught on more slowly in the medieval field, where small and ineffective states posed different methodological challenges. It took different ways of studying nature to see how environments changed in Europe and the Mediterranean during the millennium between 500 and 1500 CE. Scholars of the medieval environment of necessity adopted an acrobatic approach to the past, bringing together the usual tools of the historian -- close textual analysis \u2013 with archaeology, archaeobotany, and scientific studies of pollen distribution, weather patterns, and the contents of middens. Today, the field of medieval environmental history represents one of the most methodologically diverse and inventive among any branch of history.\n\n\nThis one-day conference, with an opening session on the previous afternoon, will appraise the major developments and turning points of the last 30 years in medieval environmental history with papers from some of the leading scholars in the field. Since one of the pioneers in medieval environmental history, Paolo Squatriti, has been on the faculty of the U of M for 25 years, the conference will take cues from his seminal works and methodological turns. Panels will offer papers within the following themes: 1. History in the mundane 2. Historical agency and unexpected actors 3. The Mediterranean as a place of hybridity 4. Materiality and the past 5. Science in the service of history.\n\nFeaturing:\nJon Arnold (University of Tulsa)\nHenrik Dey (Hunter College)\nHussein Fancy (Yale University)\nBenjamin Graham (University of Memphis)\nRichard Hoffman (York University)\nAlyssa Kotva (The Ohio State University)\nJamie Kreiner (University of California, Los Angeles)\nStephanie Leitzel (Cornell University)",
