While we know much about the history of Jim Crow in the South and increasingly in the urban North and South, we know little about the\nracial system that emerged in small towns outside the South. Focusing on towns in Indiana and Napa Valley, California, this talk considers how a culture of expulsion became a distinguishing feature of Jim Crow in small towns. Tensions related to migration, labor, and morality fueled racial discourses and practices as expulsion quietly and legally became part of the routine of daily life in small-town America.\n\nStephen A. Berrey is an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor and Associate Professor of American Culture and History at the University of Michigan. He is chair of the James W. Loewen Foundation, and Director of the Sundown Towns Project (https:\/\/justice.tougaloo.edu), a public engagement initiative begun by Loewen to document places that have intentionally excluded some racial groups. He is the author of The Jim Crow Routine: Everyday Performances of Race, Civil Rights, and Segregation in Mississippi (2015). How have Palestinians, in historic Palestine and in the diaspora, conceptualized and materialized their own history, while confronting long standing policies of destruction and erasure? This symposium takes up these questions with the help of experts in museological practice and historical anthropology. In conversation with the audience, our guests will explore strategies Palestinians have adopted to sustain collective identities rooted in shared histories, while navigating tensions across geographies, classes, and generations.\n\nDiana Abouali is the director of the Arab American National Museum, located in Dearborn, Michigan. Previously, she was an assistant professor at Dartmouth College (New Hampshire, USA); head of research and collections at the Palestinian Museum (Birzeit, Palestine), and director of education, outreach and awareness at the Petra National Trust (Amman, Jordan). She serves on several boards and committees including ArteEast (NYC), CultureSource (Detroit), the Citizens Advisory Committee at the University of Michigan- Dearborn, and the general assembly of Taawon-Welfare Association (Palestine). Diana is Palestinian, was born in Toronto, Canada and grew up in Kuwait. She received her PhD in History and Middle Eastern Studies from Harvard University in 2004.\n\nRochelle Davis is the Sultanate of Oman Associate Professor in anthropology at Georgetown University in the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies. Her research focuses on refugees, war, and conflict, particularly Palestinian, Syrian, and Iraqi refugees. She authored Palestinian Village Histories: Geographies of the Displaced, (Stanford University Press, 2012). She\u2019s currently completing a manuscript on the cultural training the U.S provided soldiers about Arabs, Muslims, and Iraqis in the U.S. military invasion and occupation of Iraq, using interviews with US military servicemembers and Iraqis. But how should we understand the ways the past shaped and produced this present? And how can, or should we, write and map the histories of people rooted in oral cultures? This presentation explores the premise that reading Lagos\u2019s streets shapes the ways to ask, analyze and frame nineteenth-century narratives of the city. By drawing new maps of Lagos and the lagoon, I transcribe the answers to these questions as they were understood and framed in the city\u2019s social geography.\n\nTrained as both historian and computer engineer, Ademide\u2019s research into the history of West African cities combines a set of interdisciplinary interests in maps, mapmaking, and digital humanities. Her first book,\u00a0Imagine Lagos, explores the city\u2019s 19th-century history. It was awarded the Best Book Prize in 2024 by the African Studies Association and is a finalist for the Association for the Study of the Worldwide African Diaspora\u2019s Outstanding First Book award. Two features of this social world\u2014interracial sexual relationships between African women and European men and the concomitant growth of an Afro-European population that remained embedded in African society\u2014were key drivers of the process of racialization unleashed by the transatlantic slave trade. This process would evolve over the course of four centuries in ways that gave Afro-European men the social positionality, financial resources, and political impetus to be the first founders of African-owned newspapers in colonial Ghana. Their newspapers reveal a late-nineteenth-century West African epistemology of blackness that stretched beyond its elite (primarily) Afro-European origins as literacy rates grew, newspaper publishing expanded, and the language of race became a politically consequential medium in the twentieth century that enabled dissent and shaped how Africans in the colony\u2019s growing public sphere debated and fought for political futures defined not by their colonizers, but by themselves.\n\nCarina Ray is a scholar of race and sexuality; comparative colonialisms and nationalisms; migration and maritime history; print cultures; bodily aesthetics, and the relationship between race, ethnicity, and political power. Ray\u2019s research is primarily focused on Ghana and its diasporas. She is the author of Crossing the Color Line: Race, Sex, and the Contested Politics of Colonialism in Ghana, winner of the American Historical Association's 2016 Wesley-Logan Book Prize and the African Studies Association's 2017 Aidoo-Snyder Book Prize. Her articles have appeared in Gender and History, PMLA, The Journal of West African History, and The American Historical Review, among others. She is series co-editor of New African Histories (Ohio University Press) with Jacob Dlamini and Derek Peterson, and African Identities: Past and Present (Cambridge University Press) with Toyin Falola.
