At the same time, \u201cimpact\u201d has become the dominant framework for measuring the value of academic research. As a result, arts and humanities faculty are often called upon to describe our \u201cimpact\u201d in ways that are legible to University leadership and funding imperatives, even as we feel uneasy about how to answer such calls in ways that are authentic to our work. How do we avoid finding ourselves outside terms that are increasingly important in the fight for the continued growth and resilience of higher education in the U.S?\n\n\u201cWhat\u2019s Our Impact?: Understanding how the Arts & Humanities Matter\u201d is a series of events slated for October 29 & 30 on UM\u2019s Ann Arbor campus. A joint initiative of the UM Arts Initiative, Office of Vice President of Research (OVPR), and the Institute for Humanities, the gathering will serve arts and humanities faculty seeking more ways to discuss their work in terms that are legible within the ascendant impact paradigm, while also ensuring that those terms are authentic to our disciplines, methods, and creative practice. Through a public conversation, facilitated workshop, keynote from UM leadership, and a panel with funders, the 1.5 day long event will bring together experts\u2013those engaging \u201cimpact\u201d in their research, those in leadership, and those community partners with whom we work\u2013and put them in conversation with arts and humanities leadership and researchers at the University of Michigan. In addition to allowing our communities to come together to elaborate what \u201cimpact\u201d means on our terms, this event is also designed to help humanities and arts faculty recognize how they When one of the languages in contact is English, language mixing results in a variety that \u201cliberally blends elements from English and from one or more local languages\u201d (Schneider 2016: 341). These hybrid English varieties are a global phenomenon and are often referred to by lexical blends that combine English and the local language or community name (e.g. Spanglish, Chinglish, Singlish). Due to the stigma frequently associated with hybrid English (Lambert 2019, Schneider 2016), connotations associated with these terms are predominantly negative, aligning with prevalent language purism ideologies or deficit-based language ideologies of language mixing as poor or broken English.Awareness and understanding of such language ideologies is critical to Native American language contexts, as without this knowledge \u201cscholars and researchers-both Native and non-Native-cannot hope to understand Native American languages and the ways speakers use them, change them, and renew them.\u201d(Kroskrity 2009:10)\n\nIn this talk, I present one part of my larger dissertation study on bilingual language practices and ideologies in Zuni Pueblo, New Mexico. My analysis focuses on language ideologies towards Zunglish, or language mixing involving Zuni and English, expressed during interviews with adult participants of various ages and with various levels of ability in the Zuni language. I show that some of the participants express ideologies of deficiency and language purism toward Zunglish, while others view language mixing as a necessity and as a reflection of hon a:wan A:shiwi \u2018our Zuni people\u2019 living in two worlds. His work focuses on dialects of American English, especially African American English (AAE). Although he works primarily in tense and aspect semantics, his research employs a mix of methods that includes statistical analysis, formal modeling and EEG (brainwave) measurement techniques. He has written on the topics such as the semantics of AAE tense\/aspect markers, single-speaker level language variation, quantifying the use of style-shift in African American adolescents, and, most recently, how dialectal differences can affect non-Mainstream English speaking 2nd graders\u2019 performance on tests of mathematical reasoning. \n\nColloquium Title: What Speakers Do with Done: Pragmatics, Persistence, and Speaker Agency in African American English\n\nAbstract: The social and grammatical structures that speakers inherit from their surroundings constrain how they express themselves. Neither, however, fully determines that expression, as neither social conditions nor grammar uses language. Speakers do. In making linguistic choices about what to say, when, and how, speakers simultaneously navigate the constraints these structures pose and draw on the resources they provide to make meaning.\n\nBecause linguists are typically less interested in speakers than in kinds of speakers, we abstract away from individual speaker choices to identify larger linguistic patterns: repeated uses of a marker or other linguistic resource that often perform shared social and grammatical functions.\nOf particular interest are patterns that repeat across generations, regions, and social situations. Their persistence reinforces their associations with socially defined communities and classes of grammar based on structural similarities. This, in turn, provides constructs such as African American English (AAE) with relatively stable identities useful in a wide range of analytical pursuits.\n\nAfrican American use of the marker done in sentences like you done messed up plays a role in a number of such patterns. It has therefore figured prominently in characterizations of African American speech, with special attention often given to the marker\u2019s use in expressing indignation and sass.\n\nRather than locate such meanings in the semantics of the marker itself, the analysis of AAE done developed in this talk assigns the marker a relatively abstract semantics based on stativity. It leaves many, if not most, of the meanings commonly associated with done to be derived pragmatically by speakers. These include not only richer affective interpretations, such as indignation, but more grammatical interpretations, such as recency and completion. Because pragmatic interpretation depends on what speakers do with markers in context, the analysis brings speaker choice into clear view.
