SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Rebuilding Democracy
DESCRIPTION:As the country heads into the 2026 midterm elections\, the University of Michigan welcomes journalist Osita Nwanevu\, contributing editor at The New Republic and columnist at The Guardian\, for a public conversation with Elizabeth Anderson\, the John Dewey Distinguished University Professor of Philosophy.\n\nThe evening centers on Nwanevu's new book\, The Right of the People: Democracy and the Case for a New American Founding\, which argues that America's democratic troubles run deeper than any single election. The real problem\, Nwanevu contends\, lies in institutions that were never designed to let majorities govern\, and in an economy that keeps power far from ordinary people.\n\nAnderson\, one of the country's most influential political philosophers\, brings her own work on democracy\, equality\, and the workplace to the exchange. Together they take up the questions this election season keeps surfacing. Who really holds power in America? Why do so many people feel unheard\, and what would it take to build a democracy worthy of the name?\n\nThe conversation is free and open to students\, faculty\, and the broader Ann Arbor community\, with time for audience questions.\n\nSchedule\n\nFriday\, October 9\, 2026 at Ross School of Business\, Room TBD\n\n5:30 pm Doors open\, light refreshments and Literati book sales in the lobby.\n6:00 pm The program begins\, including questions and answers at the end. \n7:30 pm Refreshments and book signing / sales in the lobby until 8:00 pm.\n\n\nSponsors and Partners\n\nU-M Department of Philosophy\; Energy Club at Ross\; Rackham Graduate School\; Poverty Solutions\; Business+Impact at Ross\; Wallace House\; Institute for the Humanities\; U-M Department of History\; U-M Department of English Language & Literature\; Ford School of Public Policy\; Center for Positive Organizations\; Center for Political Studies\; U-M Department of Political Science\; Michigan Law\; the Philosophy\, Politics\, and Economics Program\; Science\, Technology & Society\; Science\, Technology & Public Policy at the Ford School\; the Erb Institute\; Net Impact\; and U-M Department of Sociology.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Reimagining Work as a Product Designed for Workers
DESCRIPTION:University of Michigan’s Philosophy\, Politics\, and Economics speaker for Fall 2026 is Dart Lindsley\, CEO of the work design company 11fold and host of Work for Humans. \n\nOctober 29\, 2026 | 4-6 p.m.\nFREE\, but registration is required.\nRackham Assembly Hall\n\nAbout Dart\nDart spent 25 years in transformation roles at Fortune 100 high-tech companies\, serving as a Strategic Advisor and Head of Global Process Excellence for People Operations at Google\, and previously as a Head of Business Architecture at Cisco Systems. He speaks on why we need to radically transform where we position employees in our business models — from inputs to customers. His 2024 HBR article \"Reimagining Work as a Product\" was nominated as best-of-issue and has gone on to multiple reprints. Work for Humans has 200 episodes on which Dart speaks with diverse thinkers about how we might design better work. The show ranks in the top 3% among all podcasts and routinely peaks in the top 50 in the management category. Dart earned a 2024 Mira Fellowship for thinkers with radical reframes that can improve the world. \n\nAbout the Talk\n\nEarly management theorists committed a category error when they classified employees as inputs to production: assets\, resources\, human capital. Dart argues that error haunts work today and offers a reframe. Employees are customers. Work is a product they choose to buy with their labor. Like any subscription product\, it has to be designed well enough that working customers choose to buy it each day. Building on his HBR article \"Reimagining Work as a Product\" (with co-author Eric Anicich)\, Dart shows how this reframe overturns norms\, power structures\, and how resources are allocated. For researchers it changes the questions\, the units of analysis\, the standards of evidence. He shares examples from organizations already living in the new world. He'll then use the reframe as a case study in something larger: what it takes to lead a paradigm shift\, and the tools that serve anyone striving to redesign institutions to solve the problems of living and working together.\n\nRegistration required.
