DESCRIPTION:What pointers can contemporary writers take from one of the world’s master story tellers?\n\nShakespeare professor and bestselling novelist\, AJ Hartley\, explores the overlap in genre interests between the sixteenth/seventeenth century and our own period\, using examples from Shakespeare’s work to find inspiration and instruction for the contemporary writer. We will consider various narrative elements including plotting\, pacing\, character creation\, and the writing of dialogue. Most importantly\, we will discuss the categories of genre writing and literary fiction to see where the distinction between the two can be productively deconstructed.\n\nAbout the speaker:\nAndrew James Hartley is Emeritus professor in UNC Charlotte’s Department of Theatre in which he served as the Russell Robinson Distinguished Professor of Shakespeare studies\, specializing in performance theory and practice. In addition to teaching Shakespeare related classes\, he also taught creative writing courses for the English department. Also writing as AJ Hartley\, he is the award winning and bestselling writer of 27 mystery/thriller\, fantasy\, historical fiction\, and young adult novels. Though primarily a solo novelist\, he has collaborated with his family (HIDEKI SMITH)\, David Hewson (adaptations of HAMLET and MACBETH) and Blink-182 frontman Tom Delonge (SEKRET MACHINES\, TRINITY etc.).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:2026 Dr. Berj H. Haidostian Annual Distinguished Lecture | Poetry\, Traumatic History\, Memory: Thinking about the Armenian Genocide
DESCRIPTION:How can a past historical event be transformed by literature that comes after? Pulitzer Prize winning poet Peter Balakian will discuss the impact of the Armenian Genocide on his work. He will explore the transmission of trauma across generations and how poetry’s resources can ingest the past. Balakian examines how his ancestors have provided a grounding for his work\, ancestors like  his great-great uncle\, Krikoris Balakian (Bishop in the Armenian Church)\, one of the 250 cultural leaders arrested on April 24\, 1915\, and his grandmother\, Nafina Shekerlemdjian who along with her two young daughters survived the Genocide enduring a harrowing death march into the Syrian desert.\n\nPeter Balakian is an award winning poet\, author and translator. His *Ozone Journal* was awarded the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for poetry. Most recently he has published a  book of poems\, *New York Trilogy* (2025)\, that moves between decades of tumultuous life in New York City and the politics of the Middle East. Balakian’s poems have appeared widely in leading magazines and journals including\, *The New Yorker: 100 Years of Poetry*.  His prose books range from *Vice and Shadow: Essays on the Lyric Imagination*\, poetry\, art and culture\, to *Black Dog of Fate: A Memoir*\, — winner of the 1998 PEN/Martha Albrand Prize for the Art of the Memoir (a best book of the year for the New York Times\, the LA Times\, and Publisher’s Weekly). Balakian is the recipient of many awards and prizes amongst them: the Pulitzer Prize\, The Presidential Medal and the Movses Khorenatsi Medal from the Republic of Armenia\,  a Guggenheim Fellowship\,  and a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship. DESCRIPTION:Please join the English Department for the 2026 Annual Lora Hutchins Heberle Award and Lecture with Professor Amanda Anderson of Brown University.\n\nSome of the most influential frameworks for understanding human thought -- in psychology\, in moral and political philosophy\, and in cognitive science -- have failed to recognize the quality\, form\, and significance of slow\, persistent ruminative processes oriented toward experiences of moral shock or disturbance. Such experiences include but are not limited to profound loss\, grief\, regret\, or injury\, including those fundamental assaults on dignity we might designate as status-injury. Drawing on examples from the literary tradition\, I demonstrate that rumination is a productive moral process and not merely a psychological symptom of oversensitivity or trauma endured. \n\nAmanda Anderson is Director of the Cogut Institute for the Humanities and Andrew W. Mellon Professor of English and Humanities. Her research focuses on broad questions of intellectual history\, disciplinary formation\, and the relations among literature\, moral life\, and politics. DESCRIPTION:As the country heads into the 2026 midterm elections\, the University of Michigan welcomes journalist Osita Nwanevu\, contributing editor at The New Republic and columnist at The Guardian\, for a public conversation with Elizabeth Anderson\, the John Dewey Distinguished University Professor of Philosophy.\n\nThe evening centers on Nwanevu's new book\, The Right of the People: Democracy and the Case for a New American Founding\, which argues that America's democratic troubles run deeper than any single election. The real problem\, Nwanevu contends\, lies in institutions that were never designed to let majorities govern\, and in an economy that keeps power far from ordinary people.\n\nAnderson\, one of the country's most influential political philosophers\, brings her own work on democracy\, equality\, and the workplace to the exchange. In 2017 he founded CRIT\, an independent class he teaches out of his apartment in Brooklyn\, whose alumni have gone on to publish 34 books to date. He has written for *The Paris Review\, N+1\, The New York Times\, The New Republic\, The Believer\, Playboy\, The Nation\,* and others. \n\nTony's second book is a novel-in-stories\, *Rejection*\, published in 2024. *Rejection* has been translated into seven languages\, and was nominated for the National Book Award\, the Story Prize\, and the Clark Prize\, and received a Jack Galef Literary Arts award.
